SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A trip to get some fast food in the Midway District turned into a nightmare after an encounter with a homeless woman and a syringe.Just before noon last Thursday, Ralph Bedoe was in the drive-thru line at a Taco Bell on Midway Drive. It was the busy lunch hour. He ordered but had to wait once he reached the pay window. As he waited, he saw a homeless woman in her 40s about 25 feet away."She was rambling, throwing up her hands, talking to herself," said Bedoe.He says the woman hit the hood and window of a bus in the parking lot, before she headed toward him."She kind of hit my mirror and started rambling ... I said 'Do you need something?' Don't know if that's when something triggered," said Bedoe.Bedoe's driver side window was open. His arm was resting there."All of a sudden she pulled up her left hand, which had a bag and a syringe with a needle sticking out. She pushed my hand into the car, and when she pushed my hand, the syringe entered my hand," said Bedoe.The woman then smacked his window and wandered off."Disbelief, hoping you're going to wake up from this," said Bedoe.As the shock wore off, the new father thought of his 6-month-old son. "If I did contract something, how is that going to change my life with him? How is this going to change with length of life with him?" said Bedoe.Bedoe must undergo seven months of blood tests to rule out a myriad of diseases, including Hepatitis and HIV. The uncertainty is nerve-wracking."A trip to Taco Bell should not end with a life-changing event," said Bedoe.Bedoe was hit with a ,400 dollar medical bill because he was switching over to new insurance and was not covered at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A sea of purple covered Mission Bay Park as thousands showed up to ride, run and walk for epilepsy awareness.The event is Sharon's Ride, Run, Walk.  Sharon’s Ride was started by Dr. William Rosenfeld honor Dr. Rosenfeld’s sister, Sharon,  who was killed in a bicycle accident while bicycling cross country. She was also a nurse and teacher who cared deeply about epilepsy. Dr. Rosenfeld is the chairman of the event nationwide.   Participants could choose from a 15-mile bike ride or a 5k run or walk around Mission Bay.   The money raised benefits the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County.   678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego veteran is suing 3M Company alleging earplugs he wore while in the military were defective. He’s the latest in a series of lawsuits that have been filed against the company by service members across the country.Kevin Alicie filed a lawsuit on Wednesday claiming he “used Defendant’s dangerously defective Dual-ended Combat Arms? earplugs during tank firing, training firing, other live fire training, vehicle maintenance, and during other training and combat exercises.” According to the lawsuit Alicie wore the earplugs while at Camp Pendleton and was first diagnosed with hearing loss in California. Alicie tells 10News during his military carrier he started having problems with his hearing. He’d hear ringing. He says he didn’t think much about it until the ringing started to become more frequent.“I mentioned it to the doctor when I was doing my final physical, and sure enough when they did that last hearing test they found that there was hearing loss,” Alicie said.The lawsuit says 3M did not inform the military or Alicie that the earplugs were defective and failed to adequately warn that the earplugs did not meet the military’s sound requirements."The biggest defect is they don't do what they are advertised to do,” said Alicie’s attorney John Gomez. “Essentially they are supposed to protect your ears and your hearing in proximity to loud sounds that can cause hearing loss or damage.”Attorney John Gomez says the earplugs were standard issue in certain branches of the military between 2003 and 2015.“Without question, I think tons of users-consumers and potential victims reside right here in San Diego County,” Gomez said.According to a July 2018 press release from the United States Department of Justice, 3M agreed to pay .1 million to resolve allegations that it supplied the United States with defective dual-ended combat arms earplugs.The release says, “the United States alleged that 3M, and its predecessor, Aearo Technologies, Inc., knew the CAEv2 was too short for proper insertion into users’ ears and that the earplugs could loosen imperceptibly and therefore did not perform well for certain individuals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopper at Westfield UTC mall got a disturbing surprise while going to the bathroom, in the form of a cell phone's camera lens.Around noon on Saturday, amid a busy holiday shopping day, Mike Gonzalez went to the bathroom. His wife and 5-year-old daughter were waiting for him in the nearby food court."The urinals were taken so I went into the stall," said Gonzalez. Gonzalez went inside the stall at the far end."I'm finishing up my business, and I see a cell phone pop out of the stall next to me and pop back like that," said Gonzalez.He says the phone slid against the back wall just enough for the camera lens to be visible."Wow, did that actually happen?" said Gonzalez. Gonzalez' confusion quickly gave way to action."I was angry and felt violated," said Gonzalez. He told another man to get mall security before turning his attention to the stall."When you looked at the stall, he had it blocked with paper towels. You couldn't see in, top to bottom. Kicked the door a little and told him to get out," said Gonzalez.Gonzalez says the man that emerged was in his early 20s, about 5'10", 175 lbs, with curly, light brown hair. Gonzalez told him what he saw and the man denied it all."I was pushing him back, holding him in place so he couldn't leave," said Gonzalez.The shoving moved into the hallway, before the man slipped away and raced off. Gonzalez says what makes his skin crawl the most is the paper towel setup, which may mean the man had been in there awhile, taking photos. "The scariest thing is probably what if there were kids in there. You can put photos and videos online. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A towering geyser sent water and debris into the sky near Torrey Pines Tuesday, prompting traffic issues near busy construction.The geyser erupted around 11 a.m. on Genesee Avenue just west of Interstate 5. All lanes of traffic on Genesee Ave. were shut down in both directions.Public Utilities Department crews were able to shut off the water just before 12 p.m.10NEWS TRAFFIC CONDITIONSA city official told 10News a Caltrans contractor hit a 6-inch blowoff valve connected to a 30-inch water main.No one in the area lost water and it was put back into service around 1:30 p.m.Caltrans says the construction is part of the pedestrian bridge being built over Genesee. It's part of the larger Interstate 5/Genesee Avenue Interchange project.It's not yet clear how much water spewed out, the city says that calculation can take a couple days.The incident occurred by nearby construction for a trolley line, prompting headaches for commuters in the area. 998
