BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Health Ministry on Monday vowed to ban smoking in all its offices in four months, part of an arduous campaign to curb public smoking around the country.Yang Qing, director with the ministry's community health department, told reporters that hospitals, clinics and other medical institutes nationwide should follow suit to impose strict smoking ban by 2011."No Smoking" signs will be placed in the ministry's conference rooms, lavatories, car parks and stairways while a designated smoking area will be set up outside the office building, the official said.He said the ministry also bans its employees from giving tobacco as gifts -- a rooted tradition in China's office culture. Employees who break the ban will be punished, while those who quit smoking in a year can expect cash rewards.Though Yang did not elaborate how hospitals and clinics under the ministry's supervision should go tobacco-free, it is widely believed that similar policies will be imposed soon among the country's medical institutes.Data from the ministry show China has more than 350 million smokers, mostly men influenced by a macho culture. Doctors with smoking habit have become a prime target of China's tobacco control campaign.Yang said smoking should be banned in all public venues, workplaces and public transport vehicles by 2011, according to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which took effect in 2005.It was signed by the Chinese government in 2003 and ratified by the country's top legislature in 2005. National and local governments ramped up anti-smoking campaigns in recent years, but these were not effective as expected because no strict laws are in place, observers said.Yang said the ministry is now coordinating with the country's lawmakers to push for such legislation.

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- In light of the recent school attacks, China has tightened security for the college entrance examination which begins on Monday."All the relevant departments and local governments are fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the exam," said Liu Junyi, vice-director of the exam center under the Ministry of Education, on Sunday.In Beijing, police, security guards and volunteers will work together to guard the exam venues.In Henan and Anhui provinces, emergency-responses have been prepared in case of disorder due to bad weather, serious cheating behavior, food poisoning, or traffic accidents.China's national college entrance examination will be held on Monday, with more than 9.57 million examinees competing for 6.57 million places at nationwide universities and colleges.Because of the recent slew of attacks against students, boarding school teachers in south China' s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are required to walk students from their schools to the exam venues."The college entrance exam is a matter of great importance that demands joint efforts of relevant departments," Liu said.In Chongqing municipality, public security departments have inspected students' living areas around exam venues to ensure their safety.In Hubei province, relevant departments have completed a rehearsal using exam paper B in case that students are found cheating using exam paper A.In Jilin, an anti-cheating campaign has seized over 4,000 cheating device sets."We have organized a dozen expert teams, who are ready to handle nationwide emergencies and incidents," Liu said.In quake-hit Yushu of Qinghai Province, experts from the Ministry of Education have arrived to help hold the exam.A total of 9.57 million people have registered to sit for the exam this year. BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety conditions remained grim as the number of work safety accidents remained large, illegal production still posed challenges and safety management was still loose, a senior official said on Sunday.Yang Yuanyuan, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, made the remarks at a forum on work safety in Beijing.In the first five months this year, 499 people were dead or missing in 36 major workplace accidents such as coal mine flood and gas explosion, a rise of nearly 40 percent from the same period a year ago, Yang said.Notably, five severe accidents, each with a death toll of more than 30, had happened so far this year, killing 181 lives, up nearly 70 percent year on year, he said.Yang noted the grave picture reflected poor enforcement of safety rules, and enterprises' mere pursuit of output in sacrifice of work safety.He said the government would make continuous efforts to bring those accidents under control.
