BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday said it expected a trilateral meeting in Washington next week to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, promote dialogue rather than inflame the situation."As the situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly complicated and sensitive, we expect the meeting to ease tensions and promote dialogue, rather than heighten tensions and intensify confrontation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said in a statement Thursday night.Jiang made the statement, referring to a meeting among the foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and Republic of Korea, which is scheduled for next Monday in Washington.

AMMAN, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Jordan and China on Saturday signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement under which China provides the Arab kingdom with 4.5 million U.S. dollars to implement development projects.The agreement was signed by Jordan's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Jafar Hassan and China's Deputy Minister of Commerce Chen Jian, who was in Jordan for an official visit.Hassan commended the bilateral distinguished tie, voicing thanking and appreciation for the grant from the Chinese government, according to a statement issued by the ministry.The minister stressed Jordan' keenness to develop ties with China, adding that the bilateral ties witness distinguished development in all political, economic and cultural fields.The minister added that the signing of the agreement represents the two countries' keenness to foster bilateral ties in different fields, especially in light of current regional and international circumstances.The Chinese official expressed China's commitment to continue to provide technical and financial support to Jordan in different fields.According to the ministry, China's support to Jordan in loans and grants from 2009 to2010 stood at 119.5 million U.S. dollars.

SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, a dedicated marker to commemorate late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was unveiled here on Sunday.The marker, which sits beside the Singapore River, was unveiled by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is here on a three-day official visit.The marker comprises a text panel and a bronze bust of Deng commissioned by the Chinese Embassy to Singapore. BELGRADE, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Celebrating 30 years of cooperation and fraternal relations between the capitals of Serbia and China, an art exhibit entitled "The Beauty of Beijing" was opened in the Old Palace in Belgrade on Tuesday.Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas extended a welcome to the visiting Beijing delegation, underscoring years of cooperation and cultural exchanges."For us the bridge we are going to build together is important, along with our cultural components which will complement our desire for Belgrade in 2020 to be the European 'cultural capital'," said Djilas, making reference to the 1,507-meter bridge over the Danube River to be constructed by Chinese firms. The total value of the contract is 170 million Euros and its completion date is 2013.The original cooperation agreement between Beijing and Belgrade was signed in October 1980, with the aim of boosting cooperation in the fields of economics, urban planning, utilities, health, education, culture, tourism and sport.Ma Zhipeng, senior advisor to the city of Beijing, said cooperation between the twin cities has been expanding over the last three decades.He said the art exhibit, with its 50 paintings divided into four thematic sections, would allow the citizens of Belgrade to become more familiar with the Chinese capital."On the occasion of the festive celebrations, in addition to the exhibition, the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce and Beijing signed an agreement on cooperation, which will provide a platform for economic cooperation between the two cities," said Ma.In addition to the art exhibit, the Orchestra "Huaxia" performed a collection of classic Chinese musical pieces with traditional instruments. 

VIENNA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China remained open to initiatives on the establishment of an international nuclear fuel bank , a senior Chinese diplomat said here Friday. "The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA should play an active role in establishing such mechanism, on the prerequisite of maintaining its independence, " said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. "China is of the view that the establishment and operation of multilateral mechanism on assurance of nuclear fuel supply involves complex political, economic, technical and legal factors as well as practical interests of all Member States, " Hu told a board meeting of IAEA. Referring to an U.S. proposal on the establishment of an IAEA low-enrichment uranium bank, Hu noted that some IAEA Member States still had concerns on that proposal. "The concerns of relevant states should be taken into full consideration and resolved in order to seek the most extensive support," Hu said. He also said that while the objective of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons should be promoted, Member States ' right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy should not be affected.There have been a number of initiatives to establish nuclear fuel reserve banks in recent years.The U.S. proposal envisions a nuclear fuel bank run by IAEA, to which countries could turn to if their regular supplies were cut.However, the plan has met opposition from some developing countries. They worry that a nuclear fuel bank could undermine their right to acquire their own nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Some countries are also concerned with the possibility of fuel supply being controlled by western powers and used for political purposes.
