In Fort Collins, Colorado, there’s a place where athletes train seven days a week. The gym, run by Ryan Schultz, is called Trials Mixed Martial Arts and it’s not an ordinary gym.“This gym isn’t for your average person,” Schultz says “You’re going to be pushed here. You’re going to be tested. Overall, I think this place is for everybody. I think you just have to have the right mind set.” This gym is opened to athletes, and Schultz said that includes everyone. “If you’re an adaptive athlete, for example someone who had their leg removed, we have stuff for you as well here,” Schultz says. “But our mentality here is that there’s no laying down in life. Life doesn’t wait for anybody. I think that when people get a disease, or some sort of diagnosis it’s overwhelming for them and they tend to shut down. That’s more of the time to keep moving forward.” Schultz has multiple programs running through his gym. One of the programs was started by him and his friend Glenn Beach.“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease five years ago,” Beach says. “And I’ve been training with Ryan to help treat it.” “Glenn brought to me the Rock Steady Program,” Schultz says. “I like Rock Steady, because they have research that proves this type of program works.”Rock Steady uses boxing to help those fighting Parkinson’s. Beach says this program changed his life. “I’ve had, I would say, a 100 percent improvement,” Beach says. “I had no control over my left hand. Now, I only have a subtle tremor every once in a while. It’s so much more manageable now, and a lot of it has to do with the training I got through Rock Steady.” The course is offered three times a week, and the workouts take about one hour. Beach says that the class does progress assessments every six to 12 months. According to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, it's estimated 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It’s a sport about discipline, competition and drive, and according to Rene Carrasco, life can always be a fight. “Mexicans, we love boxing,” says Rene. “It use to be nothing but a man’s sport, you know Machismo type of deal, but it’s evolved since then.”Rene's 15-year-old daughter, Arianna Carrasco, is one of the best boxers for her age. “It’s like a high kind of, with all the adrenaline,” Arianna describes. “That’s why I love it. I just get really focused about what I’m about to do when I box.” The 15-year-old boxer is a five-time national champion in boxing. According to her father, she has only been boxing for three years. “It’s unheard of for girls to come in with such little experience and go to the top right away,” Rene says. However, Arianna fights for more than glory, she fights for those living in the border land. “I have a really close connection to the Mexican-American heritage,” Arianna says. “Everything with my family, I feel proud when I get to go out and show that.” “Almost everything is a fight when you’re Hispanic,” Rene says. "My dad is born and raised in Chihuahua Mexico. He came here when he was 30-years-old. And what they’ve gone through, it just a pride when my daughter can go out there and perform the way she does. In September, when we go to Poland, that’s for a world championship. That’s the goal. It shows no matter what your background is if you work hard, it will pay off. She’s a female Hispanic, she’s not supposed be able to do what she’s doing back in the day.”Arianna says when she fights, she represents both America and the people in La Cruces. For the past six months, electricity estimator Trevor Tate has been re-learning how to use his hand.“I use my hand ten hours a day all day, every day at work,” Tate said. “I type … take notes, crunch numbers.” That's because while lighting fireworks on New Year's Eve, Tate did something he now calls stupid."I caved to peer pressure and decided that I would hold the launch tube and fire a firework from my hand out of the launch tube and up into the air, and it would be a joyous event,” he said. “Well, the joyous event turned into one of the worst nights of my entire life."Instead of launching up into the air, the explosive fired downward, and through his right hand.“I remember my hand coming all the way back like this and me telling myself, ‘wow that didn't feel right, felt like a lot of pressure.’ I felt pain in my elbow and that was it, nowhere else,” Tate said. “And then I looked down at the back of my hand and the whole back of my hand in this area was white — just like bright white. And I’m like, ‘something has happened.’ ”He soon realized his hand was barely still attached. Doctors at two different hospitals that night told him he may lose his hand. But he was soon put in touch with Dr. Benson Pulikkottil at Denver's Swedish Medical Center.“It was a pretty shocking injury,” Pulikkottil said.Shocking, but something he believed he could fix. He attached Tate's hand to the tissue on his chest so blood could flow from his chest into his hand.
