SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A lawsuit has now been filed surrounding the platform collapse that injured 21 children and some adults last November at Vault PK parkour gym inside a Barrio Logan warehouse.Two mothers and six children are represented in the complaint, filed against Vault PK and San Diego's Metropolitan Transportation System (MTS), among other defendants.MTS owned the warehouse and subleased the space to a business that subleased again to Vault PK. A few days after the collapse, MTS was hit with a dozen building code violations.Some of the families are suing MTS and Vault PK for negligence, among other complaints.MTS told 10News it won't comment on pending litigation.  713

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local college student is trying to stay afloat since the "snowball effect" of the coronavirus turned his life upside down.In November, Andres' Cortes mother and brother went on their dream vacation: a trip to China and the Great Wall. They were due back in December. Months later, they remain in a hotel in Shanghai."They're healthy, but I'm worried. It spreads very quickly," said Cortes.With no available flights home, their return date remains unknown."You're missing out on your family, the pillar of life that that gets you stable. Not having my mom is affecting to me," said Cortes.Another thing affecting him is a loss of work. His part-time job with MTS special events has been scuttled with the ongoing coronavirus precautions."My job is my only source of income," said Cortes.Cortes is worried about having enough money for food and his next rent payment."Just don't really what to expect of the future. It seems to be snowballing into a bigger and bigger effect," said Cortes.For Cortes, the impact may also be felt in his schooling. He's a business major at City College. His classes are now online, a format he doesn't perform well with."It's not the same to study online than to actually to go to class, to be able to talk to the teacher and answer your questions," said Cortes.Cortes fears he won't pass his final classes and won't graduate in May. He calls the unknowns of his life 'overwhelming.' "We just all have to take it seriously. All of us want this to stop. We want to go back to school and our jobs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new social media trend is hoping to help local food places hit hard by this COVID-19 pandemic.Currently, restaurants in the county are only allowed to serve food through take-out, delivery, or drive-thru service. Some restaurants have had to close altogether, not able to afford to keep their doors open. For those businesses trying to stay open, the community is lending its support through #takeoutchallenge.Sports Director Ben Higgins called it the easiest challenge in history. “All you have to do is go order take out from one of your local restaurants,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. Ben ordered food from Buona Forchetta in Encinitas.Others also chimed in on social media.Jason tweeted that he ordered from Mama Kat’s in San Marcos for the first time. On Twitter, Ed gave a shout out to Firehouse Subs in Kearny Mesa and said he ordered twice there this past week. Duncan Hunter’s attorney to the United States Deputy Attorney General discussed possible evidence of extramarital infidelity and excessive drinking.On August 6, Hunter attorney Gregory A. Vega wrote to Rod Rosenstein at the Department of Justice requesting the postponement of this week's campaign fund misuse indictment, and addressed “an overly aggressive prosecution intent on criminalizing content that is civil in nature”.“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility, or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity; these allegations are, however, intended to embarrass and humiliate the Congressman shortly before a crucial election, and also to alienate him from his wife, the only other person under investigation and his intended co-defendant,” wrote Vega.Prosecutors allege the Hunters used more than 0,000 in campaign funds to support a lavish lifestyle and reported the purchases as campaign expenses.The affidavit detailed money spent on hotel rooms for different individuals and various social outings, including one involving 30 shots of tequila. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North County school district is fighting off potential threats with cutting-edge technology.On Thursday the school board approved plans to install an electronic access control system on its campus by the 2019-2020 school year. Funding for the 4,000 project will come out of the district's capital facilities fund. The system will provide global lockdown capability through panic buttons, card readers, computer, or mobile device.LED lights will notify teachers if their classroom door is locked, they can also lock them manually or with a key card. Teachers can also unlock the doors from the inside if they need to let a student in.Jeff Kaye, President and CEO of School Safety Operations, assesses how secure schools are and offers recommendations.He commended Rancho Santa Fe for a high baseline for emergency preparedness, but says it can always be improved. “What we see with locks at all schools is the inability to lock a door from inside of classroom without the use of keys. It makes sense because most of these schools were designed before we had this type of threat. Locks were meant to secure the school after school, not to keep something bad out during school," said Kaye.Kaye says during the Parkland, Florida shooting someone was killed opening the door to try and secure the classroom. He recommends all schools invest in electronic locks in some capacity.“Money is a tough commodity in education safety, especially in California. So when we have someone trying to sell Kevlar doors or Kevlar safe rooms or Kevlar backpacks and the school doesn't have doors that can lock, we say it's like building your swimming pool before building your house," said Kaye. He says there are more affordable options for larger school districts. “That’s where we need to go in education safety, proactive rather than reactive," Kaye.The International School Safety Institute Conference will be held in San Diego at the end of September. 1969
