BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police will begin a special four-month campaign to crack down on the production and use of counterfeit automobile license plates on Thursday.Police around the country will target trade in fake license plates, registration papers and other license plate-related crime, the Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday in a statement on its website.Violators sometimes forge license plates for military and government vehicles to enjoy privileges like free expressway charges.Some drivers use stickers to cover their license plates to cheat police.The campaign will begin June 10 and finish Oct. 10.Police carried out similar campaigns during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the National Day holidays in 2009 to create better traffic conditions.Statistics with the ministry show police nationwide seized about 267,000 counterfeit license plates in the 2008 campaign and 183,000 fake plates in the 2009 campaign.

HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province.The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week. Chun'an County was among the worst hit by the rain.Also Friday, rescuers from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region recovered the bodies of three people from rubble after a rainstorm damaged two homes in Dongma Village of Rongshui Miao Autonomous County around 3 a.m., according to the county's flood control and drought relief headquarters.In the far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, an exploration worker was suffocated to death Thursday after he was buried by a rain-triggered landslide on a hill in Qira County, said a spokesman with the county government Friday.At around 2:40 p.m. Thursday the landslide of mud-and-stone hit a tent where five exploration workers with the Xinjiang Xindi Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. were taking a rest, said the spokesman.Four workers managed to escape while one was found dead after being dug out half an hour later, he said.The civil affairs bureau in northern Hebei Province said Friday a thunderstorm with sporadic hail hit Zhangjiakou City from Wednesday to Thursday, leaving two dead and three missing.The storm hit six counties in Zhangjiakou, with 56,200 residents suffering losses and hundreds of houses collapsing. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The gross domestic product (GDP) in China's western regions grew by 13.5 percent year on year in 2009, much higher than the country's revised national GDP growth of 9.1 percent, according to a report issued here on Saturday.It is the eighth year in a row for these regions to score a double-digit GDP growth after the Chinese government launched a "West Development" campaign ten years ago, read the report on the economic development of China's western regions issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.It attributed the GDP growth mainly to China's policies to stimulate domestic demand and the increase in investment, despite the global financial crisis.Five provinces, regions or municipalities saw an increase of more then ten percent in the disposable income of urban citizens in 2009, as the income gap between China's western and eastern regions had begun to narrow, the report said.The average yearly per capita disposable income of urban citizens in the western regions was 12,971 yuan (about 1,918 U.S. dollars) in 2008.Noting that economic development in the western regions still heavily relied on natural resources, the report said efforts should be made to increase the regions' capacity to ensure sustainable development, while establishing a low-carbon industrial system.

BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy had conducted a large scale of live-ammunition training exercise in the South China Sea, according to a front-page report on Thursday's PLA Daily newspaper.The exercise, which was carried out on July 26, brought together a large group of warships, submarines and combat aircraft.During the exercise, warships and submarines from the Navy's South China Sea Fleet performed precision strikes on surface targets by firing guided missiles while surface warships conducted anti-missile air defense operations, said the PLA's official newspaper.A naval aviation fleet also participated in air control operations, according to the report, which did not specify the exact location of the training or the number of participating warships.In overseeing the training, General Chen Bingde, PLA's chief of the General Staff, said that the PLA should "pay close attention to the development of situation and tasks" and make "solid preparation for military struggle which depends on massive military training" .

MANILA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government's high- level delegation to Beijing and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to brief the Chinese side the hijack crisis was postponed and would be reset soon, senior government official said Thursday.Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, quoting the Department of Foreign Affairs as telling reporters that the Philippine government is "awaiting for the confirmation of the Chinese side on the arrangement that will ensure that the mission of the planned visit is achieved."He added that appropriate announcement will be made when the visit will take place.Earlier, Philippine authorities said the high-level delegation composed of Vice-President Jejomar Binay, Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Lacierda were supposed to leave for Beijing on Thursday and then proceed to Hong Kong on Friday.The officials will personally deliver President Benigno Aquino III's messages when meeting with Chinese leaders in Beijing and Hong Kong.The hostage crisis in Manila, involving a 21-member Hong Kong tour group, ended on Monday night with eight hostages killed and several others injured. The dismissed Filipino police officer, who hijacked the tour bus, was also killed during the police assault.President Bengigno Aquino has said the Monday's hostage-taking drama was "ghastly" and admitted there were "many failures".
