BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) - The Chinese education ministry Tuesday ordered education authorities and schools in flood-hit regions to ensure the safety of students against floods and flood triggered disasters. The ministry ordered all necessary measures be taken to guarantee the safety of students, including suspending classes, rescheduling exams, relocating classrooms to safer areas, and other actions. Also, according to the ministry, school buildings in flood-hit regions could only be put back into use after examination and approval by authorities, so that no student is endangered by the possible collapse of flood-soaked school buildings.Rainstorms and the floods that followed left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River, as of Tuesday afternoon. The education ministry also cautioned against accidents involving students during their summer vacations, such as drowning while swimming and contracting food poisoning.

HARARE, July 7 (Xinhua) --The eighth session of the Zimbabwe/ China joint permanent commission ended in Harare on Wednesday with a pledge by the two countries to widen and deepen economic cooperation. The two countries discussed ways of enhancing various cooperation projects already being implemented and new ones in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors. An agreement was also signed for China to provide 1.5 million U. S. dollars to the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Hospital in Mahusekwa, Mashonaland East Province, for medical equipment and drugs. The hospital is part of the several projects that include two primary schools and an agricultural demonstration center that China is constructing in Zimbabwe as part of the eight measures agreed to at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in 2006 in Beijing.Other support from China includes a 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit facility extended by the China Exim Bank for procurement of agricultural inputs to boost food production in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwean foreign minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi praised China for setting a shining example to other world donors by honoring pledges it made to assist Zimbabwe under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation.Mumbengegwi noted that under the eight measures enunciated by Chinese President Hu Jintao at the FOCAC heads of state summit in Beijing in 2006, projects earmarked for Zimbabwe are now at various stages of completion. The Chinese government has also dispatched 10 agricultural experts and 23 volunteers to buttress the cooperation."By successfully implementing these measures, China has set a shining example for other donors and international cooperating partners who do not always honor their commitments," Mumbengegwi said at the opening of the eight session. He said Zimbabwe is also willing to learn and benefit from China's experience and expertise in the economic sphere, which has transformed the country into a global economic powerhouse."Zimbabwe will, therefore, welcome Chinese investment and is ready to discuss during the joint commission specific projects in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors," he said.Mumbengegwi thanked China Exim Bank for extending the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan repayment period from five to eight years, saying this would give Zimbabwe the breathing space to turn around its economy and enhance capacity to repay loans extended by China."The payment of the arrears and extension of the repayment period on the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan have paved the way for increased cooperation between Zimbabwe and China, " he said. While hailing China as a good example of a reliable and dependent donor partner, Mumbengegwi said he hoped the Asian country will similarly implement new eight measures announced by Premier Wen Jiabao at the fourth ministerial conference of FOCAC held in Egypt last year.He said the projects that have been identified for implementation in Zimbabwe are in critical sectors of energy, water, health, education, agriculture and social infrastructure.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said. The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier. The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices. As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.

TONGHUA, Jilin, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to save 18 miners trapped in a coal mine that flooded due to a deluge that hit the area in northeast China's Jilin Province shortly after midnight Tuesday.More than 2,000 rescuers are pumping water out of the mine through an auxiliary shaft after the entrance of the main shaft collapsed amid rain-triggered floods.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has instructed the local government and other related departments to spare no effort in saving the miners' lives. The accident happened at 12:10 a.m. at Hongyuan Coal Mine in the Erdaojiang District of Tonghua, the third largest city in Jilin, said Zhang Dejun, a spokesman for the city government. He said the miners were working below ground to pull out machinery that had been soaked after days of torrential rain, when the flooding occurred. The mine was near the lower reaches of Daluoquangou River, which is swollen after the catchment received 116.2 millimeters of rain Monday."Time is very pressing," Zhang said.Wang Rulin, governor of Jilin Province, arrived at the scene at noon Tuesday to oversee the rescue. Wang visited the families of the trapped miners to hear rescuers' and experts' reports. The Hongyuan Coal Mine has an annual production capacity of 60,000 tonnes and is a township-owned mine. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.Jilin Province has been battered by heavy rain and floods this summer. At least 85 people have died and 66 are missing after floods over the past two months, according to the provincial government.
