Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said during a Senate hearing Tuesday that he was "very disturbed" by the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and said it's conceivable that the U.S. could see as many as 100,000 new infections a day should trends continue."We are now having 40,000+ new cases a day," Fauci said. EARLESVILLE, Md. — Deputy State Fire Marshals are investigating an incident that left a Maryland student burned on a school bus on Tuesday afternoon.Fire crews and investigators were dispatched to Hack's Point General Store located in Earlesville, Maryland when they found the student with burns on his hands.An investigation showed that while the school bus was on route to drop off students from Bohemia Manor High School, the students on the bus notified the driver that there was a cellphone on the floor smoking.They say the 18-year-old student picked up the cellphone from the ground and he burned his hands while attempting to throw it off the bus.The student was later transported to Union Hospital of Cecil County with non-life threatening injuries.Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the phone explosion. 872

(KGTV) — Two people have been arrested after several leads from the El Cajon community led deputies to a stolen iron horse in Arizona.The metal sculpture depicting a horse was taken from Double S Tack and Feed in El Cajon on Oct. 2, but wasn't reported until 10 days later, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Leads from several community members and businesses were "instrumental" in the investigation by providing surveillance footage, SDSO added.Investigators were eventually led to Arizona, where they say the stolen 300-pound sculpture was taken to a home in Golden Valley, Ariz.Percy Hill, 56, of Golden Valley, Ariz., and Rick Freeman, 62, of Lakeside, were both arrested for theft and booked into detention facilities in their respective areas, SDSO said.Rita Gallant, who owns the business, told 10News she purchased the horse about 15 years ago and that it has become something of a neighborhood icon.She's now coordinating with Arizona Law Enforcement to recover the iron horse. 1027

(KGTV) - A pair of Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets from an El Cajon high school are turning heads for their achievements.It has been 19 years since a student from Grossmont High School was appointed to military service academy and the class of 2018 has two who received multiple appointments.John Flaherty and Nicholas Ghosn earned four appointments in total.Flaherty was nominated to West Point and the United States Merchant Marine Academy while Ghosn earned them to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.“I was on top of the world,” said Flaherty describing the moment he got the call he was being appointed, “it was everything I dreamed of since I was four-years-old.”Flaherty is attending West Point and Ghosn will head to Annapolis at the end of their summer.Nicholas Ghosn says it was bittersweet to get the nod from the U.S. Navy.“All I ever wanted was to go to that college and join the ranks of the officer corps in the Navy, but I knew I was going to be away from my family and friends and home,” said Ghosn, “it’s going to be a long time before I get to see them so I was kind of sad because I knew this was it.”The 17-year-olds grew up a mile and a half from each other in Spring Valley and played sports together.“It’s unprecedented,” said Gunnery Master Sgt. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who rear-ended a pregnant woman's car in Ramona two years ago while driving drunk, killing the woman and her unborn child, was sentenced Monday to 34 years to life in state prison. Andrew Milonis, 46, was convicted last month of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run for the Mother's Day 2017 crash that killed 29-year-old Jessica Foderingham and her unborn daughter, who she and her husband had planned to name Ayanna. Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans read a letter from the victim's husband, who was driving ahead of his wife when he saw the crash in his rear-view mirror, pulled over and tried to pull her out of the wreckage. Her two young sons from a previous relationship were in the car with their stepfather, and saw the aftermath. ``I still hear them screaming in my dreams, saying, `Daddy, save Mommy,' and `Mommy, get up,''' he wrote. Milonis had been drinking throughout the day, downing at least seven drinks at a local bar before he got behind the wheel of his GMC Yukon, the prosecutor said. Evans said a bartender recommended that Milonis arrange a Lyft ride to get home, but he ignored the advice. Milonis struck a tree and multiple telephone poles before crashing into Foderingham's car, Evans said. After the crash, Milonis continued driving to a nearby hotel, where employees called a Lyft driver for him. When the Lyft driver arrived and asked Milonis where he wanted to go, the defendant told the driver something to the effect of, ``Anywhere I can get a drink,'' according to Evans. When tested, he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.20, but Evans said it was above 0.30 at the time of the crash -- well above the 0.08 legal limit. The prosecutor told jurors the impact of the crash left a partial imprint from Milonis' license plate on the back of Foderingham's car, and there was no evidence of mechanical issues on either vehicle that might have contributed to the crash.
