There’s no end in sight to the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci and other top government health experts told Congress on Friday.“While it remains unclear how long the pandemic will last, COVID-19 activity will likely continue for some time,” Fauci, along with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention head Dr. Robert Redfield and Health and Human Services testing czar Adm. Brett Giroir said in prepared testimony for a special House panel investigating the pandemic. At a time when early progress seems to have been lost and uncertainty clouds the nation’s path forward, Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, is calling on lawmakers — and all other Americans — to go back to public health basics such as social distancing and wearing masks.During Friday's hearing, Fauci was asked why Europe appeared to be handling the crisis better than the United States. He explained that the U.S. lockdown wasn't as restrictive and that the country reopened too quickly."We really only functionally shut down about 50 percent in terms of the totality of the country," Fauci said. He added that while Europe dropped down to just a few thousand new cases a day, the U.S. bottomed out at 20,000 new cases a day, which created a difficult baseline with which to work.Fauci also faced a series of questions from Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, regarding the spread of the virus and ongoing protests against systemic racism. Jordan asked Fauci directly if "protests should be shut down," the way some churches and businesses were earlier this year.Fauci responded by saying that people should be avoiding crowds, no matter the situation."It's not a judgment, it's a public health statement," he said.Fauci also gave encouraging comments regarding the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. He reiterated his hopes that a vaccine could be ready by the end of the year, and said that about 250,000 people had signed up to participate in vaccine trials. The panel, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, remains divided about how to reopen schools and businesses, mirroring divisions among Americans.A rebound of cases across the South and the West has dashed hopes for a quick return to normal life. Problems with the availability and timeliness of testing continue to be reported. And the race for a vaccine, though progressing rapidly, has yet to deliver a breakthrough.Fauci’s public message in recent days has been that Americans can’t afford a devil-may-care attitude toward COVID-19 and need to double down on basic measures such as wearing masks in public, keeping their distance from others and avoiding crowds and indoor spaces such as bars. That’s echoed by Redfield and Giroir, though they are far less prominent.Fauci’s dogged persistence has drawn the ire of some of President Donald Trump’s supporters and prompted a new round of calls for his firing. But the veteran of battles against AIDS and Ebola has stuck to his message, while carefully avoiding open confrontations with the Trump White House. In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week, Fauci said he was “disturbed” by the flat-out opposition in parts of the country to wearing masks as a public health protective measure.“There are certain fundamentals,” he said, “the staples of what you need to do ... one is universal wearing of masks.”Public health experts say masks help prevent an infected person who has yet to develop symptoms from passing the virus to others. For mask wearers, there’s also some evidence that they can offer a degree of protection from an infected person nearby.Fauci said in his AP interview that he’s concerned because the U.S. has not followed the track of Asian and European nations also hit hard by the coronavirus.Other countries that shut down their economies knocked back uncontrolled spread and settled into a pattern of relatively few new cases, although they continued to experience local outbreaks. The U.S. also knocked back the initial spread, but it never got the background level of new cases quite as low. And the resurgence of COVID-19 in the Sunbelt in recent weeks has driven the number of new daily cases back up into the 60,000-70,000 range. It coincided with economic reopening and a return to social gatherings, particularly among younger adults. Growing numbers of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths have followed as grim consequences.Nearly 4.5 million Americans have been been infected since the start of the pandemic, and more than 150,000 have died, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University.Fauci said there’s evidence the surge across the South may be peaking, but upticks in the Midwest are now a concern.“They’ve really got to jump all over that because if they don’t then you might see the surge we saw in some of the Southern states,” he told the AP.Though Fauci gets push-back from White House officials, other medical experts in the administration are on the same page when it comes to the public health message.Giroir, the testing czar, told reporters Thursday: “I think it’s very important to make sure that we all spread the public health message that we can control all the outbreaks occurring right now.”He said controlling the outbreaks will require people to wear masks, avoid crowded indoor spaces and wash their hands frequently. 5343

Three people trapped in an inactive West Virginia mine for several days were rescued on Wednesday, state officials said. The three West Virginia residents were brought to the surface and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, Samantha Smith, a spokesperson with the West Virginia Department of Commerce, told CNN late Wednesday.Kayla Williams, 25 of Artie; Erica Treadway, 31, of Pax and Cody Beverly, 21 of Dorothy, were alert, talking and walking without assistance, Raleigh County Sheriff Scott Van Meter said in an interview. He said the three had snacks and water with them."It's a miracle they were found alive," the sheriff said.Williams, Treadway and Beverly were among a group of four people who were reported missing Saturday after an abandoned ATV they were believed to be riding was found near the entrance of the Rock House Powellton mine in Clear Creek, according to a statement from West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice. One person, Eddie Williams, 43 of Artie, emerged late Monday, according to the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training. He said the three people left trapped were alive and gave authorities details of their location, according to Justice's office.Rescue teams failed to find them Monday and Tuesday. But had been removing standing water from the mine and pumping in fresh air, and by Wednesday, more access space had been cleared, allowing more rescuers to enter, Justice's office said. The underground mine is inactive and sealed, Contura Energy, whose affiliate Elk Run Coal owns the property, told CNN, adding that the person who made it out "was apprehended by law enforcement."This is the second trespassing incident at an abandoned mine reported in the last two weeks, Justice said in the statement.Van Meter said the three who were found alive on Wednesday could possibly be charged because they were not supposed to be in the mine. But first, the sheriff said, "they need to enjoy being rescued." 1973

There is something your kids and the entire family are bringing into your homes every day that is silently threatening your family’s health. They hitch a ride on you and your kids and live on almost every item in your home. For days, they are silent and unseen until the dreaded stomach flu.“I got it and I was down for three days and then it slowly hit two of my other daughters. That was the whole second week of Christmas break was spent nursing someone back to health.”Melissa Macavage, of Detroit, Michigan, has three girls, a busy job and is an active volunteer at her church. To say her family is busy, is an understatement.“Volleyball practice or volleyball game, homework, dinner, picking up my other daughter from her various events,” said Macavage.  “Not much time for sickness, so after that stomach flu took the family out last winter, I took it to the next level,” she adds.“Hand washing, I am militant about that. As soon as they get home from whatever their event is, I make them wash their hands,” Macavage explains. So, we wanted to find out just what is lurking on those everyday items, the things all of us touch multiple times a day, every day of the week. The lab at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit provided us with these swabs and taught our executive producer how to collect a sample. We took seven samples including the television remote, Melissa’s cell phone, the bathroom door knob, the refrigerator door handle, a lunch box, the steering wheel and Melissa’s purse.“When you rub the swab all over the specimen you’re targeting, so whether it’s the phone or door handle you’re picking up the bacteria that are colonized on the surface, then we bring it back to the lab and put it on these culture media.”  Dr. Linoj Samuel is a microbiologist and Dr. Katherine Reyes specializes in infectious diseases. They work together at Henry Ford Hospital, regularly looking at samples to determine what an illness is and where it came from. They analyzed our seven samples and shared them with Melissa.“Most bacteria and viruses can cause some serious infection and some viruses like the flu virus can live on a surface for up to 8 hours,” Samuel explains. When it came to the remote, there was a little surprise: some germs live on those surfaces normally and yet some should not be there like bacteria or germs that are on our mouth, then you see them on remote control.“I wonder if they were having a snack then went and reached the remote,” she adds. The item we thought would be the worst, turned out to be clear of bacteria.“The cell phone, surprisingly, we did not find any bacteria which is somewhere that I would have expected to find a lot of bacteria but that might suggest recent cleaning, so it’s hard to say.”The one item with the most and fastest growing bacteria was the refrigerator door handle.“If you see this, that one can look scary,” Reyes said. The doctors tell us none of the bacteria found on Melissa’s items is the type that would get a healthy person sick, but someone with a compromised immune system, the elderly or perhaps someone with a cut could develop an illness or an infection. So, what can you do? Reyes says the best thing is also the simplest.“Hand washing!” she tells us.She also encourages regular use of cleaning wipes on all our highly-touched items.Want to look at the types of bacteria found on all the items? 3408

TOKYO — Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, says he will resign because a chronic illness has resurfaced. Concerns about Abe’s health began this summer and grew this month when he visited a Tokyo hospital two weeks in a row for unspecified health checkups. Abe has acknowledged having ulcerative colitis since he was a teenager and has said the condition was controlled with treatment. Abe, whose term ends in September 2021, is expected to stay on until a new party leader is elected and formally approved by the parliament.Abe's resignation will mark the end of his second term. He served as prime minister from September 2006 to September 2007 before resigning due to health problems. He assumed office for his second term in December 2012. 767
