SAN DEIGO (KGTV)-- Millions of students from around the world skipped class and took to the streets to call attention to climate change. San Diego was one of more than 3,600 locations that held the global Climate Change Walkout. Hundreds of teenagers marched from San Diego High School in Downtown to the San Diego Civic Center, hoping to make an impact, three days before the United Nations Climate Change Summit. It's a fight against time. Time, they say, the planet does not have. "Climate change is the existential threat of our generation," Elea Castiglione said. The sophomore at San Deigo High School organized the walkout with her friends. She and hundreds of students hoped their actions would inspire world leaders to take aggressive steps to combat climate change. Point Loma High School senior, Kisi Apaak performed her spoken-word piece, "Madness," at the San Diego Civic Center rally. Being 17, she said she does not have an income, nor does she have the right to vote. She said spoken-word is her way to show Mother Nature that she cares."This is all I know how to do, is write and talk and get out and take action," Apaak said. Many said they were inspired by Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist, who has now become the face of the movement. Activists here said San Diegans should be more involved, considering our geography."I think that San Diego as a city needs to go carbon neutral, and we also need to be leaders as a coastal city in our protest for nationwide and global change," Castiglione said. Change, they hope to see in the world, before it's too late."I'll pray. Pray with my hands and my feet and my voice. I'll pray that you join me before we don't have a choice," Apaak said in her performance. Several area school districts, including San Diego Unified, passed resolutions to support the campaign. Most of the walkouts required some form of parental permission. 1930

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 47-year-old man accused of intentionally driving a pickup truck off Sunset Cliffs and into the ocean with his twin toddler daughters inside pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges.Robert Brians, who is also charged in the 13-count criminal complaint with child abuse, making criminal threats, child abduction and burglary, is being held without bail and is due back in court July 22 for a readiness conference. He allegedly drove into the water on the morning of June 13 with his 2- year-old daughters inside the truck. The girls were hospitalized in stable condition, according to a GoFundMe page created to raise money for their medical bills.About 4:30 a.m. that day, the toddlers' mother called 911 to report that Brians had taken their children without permission and allegedly contacted her via ``numerous calls and texts ... clearly stating she may not see (them) again,'' according to the GoFundMe.com page.He allegedly threatened to drive the vehicle off the Coronado Bay Bridge, but was later spotted by officers on Hill Street near Cornish Drive and sped off, careening over the side of a cliff and landing upside down in the water, according to police.Moments later, a canine officer also responding to the emergency, 22- year SDPD veteran Jonathan Wiese, arrived in the area. Reaching the scene of the crash and seeing Brians' pickup upside down in the water, Wiese grabbed a long leash he uses for his service dog, wrapped it around his chest, gave the other end to fellow officers and rappelled down the precipice.Wiese then swam out to the foundering truck and rescued the children and Brians. Medics took all three to hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening. 1775

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A lawsuit filed by the Satanic Temple alleges an advertising company unfairly refused to display billboards promoting a ritual offered by the group to help people bypass abortion rules in some states. The group, based in Salem, Massachusetts, announced Wednesday that it sued Lamar Advertising in Arkansas state court for alleged religious discrimination. The Louisiana-based company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Satanic Temple says Lamar refused to display eight billboards in Arkansas and Indiana promoting what the group calls its “religious abortion ritual.” The Satanic Temple describes the ritual as a “sacramental act that confirms the right of bodily autonomy.”By performing the ritual, the group says, people can claim a religious exemption from mandatory waiting periods, counseling, ultrasounds and other measures that some states require before an abortion can be performed. The group says it submitted five designs to Lamar to be displayed near crisis pregnancy centers. In one of the images, a bowl of cake batter is shown with the text, “not a cake,” next to an image of a sperm and egg with the text “not a baby.” It’s accompanied by text saying, “Our religious abortion ritual averts many state restrictions.”Lamar rejected the billboards and said their content was “misleading and offensive,” according to the suit. The Satanic Temple alleges that the rejection was based on religious discrimination. 1474
