BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw smooth flow of traffic Monday, the first workday of 2010, after a snow storm Sunday caused traffic breakdown in the national capital.     The city's bus and subway services went smoothly on Monday, with no gridlock and serious traffic accidents reported, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.     During the peak hours on Monday morning, the Beijing Subway Operating Company dispatched 20 additional subway trains to ease the passenger flow.     The early bus of all routes started off on time in the morning, according to the Beijing Public Transport Holdings.     Most of the bus services ran smoothly, while only 19 lines leading suburban mountainous areas were suspended, it said.     From 9:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Monday, more than 20,000 sanitation workers were dispatched to clean the snow in the city's main roads with 15,710 tonnes of snow-dissolving agent, said Zhang Zhiqiang, an official with the Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group Co., Ltd.     By 9:00 a.m., all expressways in Beijing reopened to traffic, while some national and municipal highways were shut down due to the slippery road conditions.     The vehicle flow in Beijing was reduced Monday after authorities announced on Sunday that classes in primary and middle schools would be suspended on Monday, and urged institutions and companies to stagger their work time.     However, transportation in eastern Shandong Province and northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was seriously affected by the heavy snow.     By 9:30 a.m. Monday, many expressways in Shangdong were closed and 19 flights cancelled in the Yantai International Airport.     In Inner Mongolia, 13 trains were delayed Monday in Hohhot, the regional capital, said the Hohhot railway authorities.     The No. 1820 train, carrying more than 800 passengers, started off at 5:10 p.m. after being stranded for 12 hours, they said.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lu Zhengcao, the last one of New China's first 57 generals, was cremated here Tuesday. Lu died of illness on Oct. 13 at the age of 106. Chinese President Hu Jintao, former president Jiang Zemin, and other senior leaders including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the cremation ceremony, which was held Tuesday morning at the hall of the Beijing Babaoshan Cemetery.     In 1955, the People's Republic of China (PRC) first adopted the military ranks and 55 senior officers were granted generals. Two more joined them in 1956 and 1958 respectively. ASHGABAT, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov agreed here Sunday to continually advance bilateral cooperation in an all-round and sustainable way.     The Chinese president, who arrived here earlier in the day for a working visit, held talks with Berdymukhamedov in Ashgabat, capital of this Central Asia nation in the afternoon.     Hu said the Chinese and Turkmen economies are highly complementary to each other, and bilateral cooperation in all dimensions and various fields accords with the needs of economic development of both countries.     Hu outlined four areas that the two countries should focus on to advance practical cooperation. BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to build the South-to-North Water Diversion Project into a water-efficient and environment-friendly project.     Li made the remarks at a meeting held by the State Council on Tuesday, saying the government should stick to policies regarding resource-conservation and environment-protection in the construction work.     Li ordered relevant departments to intensify their efforts on pollution control and eco-environment protection in both the water source area and areas along the project in the course of construction.     Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that a good job on the resettlement of residents is essential.     Addressing the meeting, vice premier Hui Liangyu ordered attaching great importance to quality and safety, strengthening pollution treatment and properly resettling local residents.     Launched in 2002, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, consisting of eastern, middle and western routes, is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of the country, mainly the Yangtze River, to the dry north.     By the end of October, the government has invested 34 billion yuan (or 4.98 billion U.S. dollars) in the eastern and middle routes, and part of the project has contributed to alleviate the water strain in Beijing.
