A group of Republicans in the House of Representatives have formally nominated President Donald Trump for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.In a letter addressed to Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Nobel Committee, the group nominated Trump on the basis of his work to end the war between North and South Korea."Since taking office, President Trump has worked tirelessly to apply maximum pressure on North Korea to end its illicit weapons programs and bring peace to the region. His Administration successfully united the international community, including China, to impost one of the most successful international sanctions regimes in history. The sanctions have decimated the North Korean economy and have been largely credited for bringing North Korea to the negotiating table," the letter reads in part.The letter is signed by Indiana Rep. A Long Island man is facing charges after striking protesters with his vehicle Monday evening at a Black Lives Matter march, police in Suffolk County said.Authorities said Anthony Cambareri, 36, was driving his Toyota RAV4 westbound on Broadway in Huntington Station when he struck two protesters standing in the roadway around 6:45 p.m.The two pedestrians were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.Police said Cambareri fled the scene but was caught moments later.Facebook user Matthew Showtyme posted video on Facebook reportedly of the driver stopped just after the incident.Warning: The below video contains language some readers may find offensive. Cambareri was not injured and his vehicle was impounded for a safety check, police said.Suffolk County police said the Coram man was arrested on third-degree assault charges and issued a desk appearance ticket. A Glendale, Arizona mother has been arrested after reportedly leaving her toddler in a car for 90 minutes while she went shopping. Glendale police report that around 9 p.m. Monday, they were called to a shopping plaza at 91st and Northern avenues. Witnesses reported to police that there was a toddler in a car with no adult around. Police found the 2-year-old boy, "crying, dirty and covered in urine." The child's mother, 19-year-old Dakota Cheyanne Brown, was located in a nearby store. She allegedly told police that she was in the store for about 45 minutes and was checking on him by looking out the store window. Police say the car windows were darkly tinted and they couldn't see inside, even from a few feet away. Store employees allegedly told police that Brown was in the store for about 90 minutes. Store surveillance video reportedly shows that Brown never left the store to check on her son. Brown was arrested for endangerment and child abuse. 1011

A man in Haines City, Florida, was arrested Saturday after allegedly stealing a piece of construction equipment and taking Joe Biden campaign signs out of the yards in a local neighborhood, according to NBC News, The Associated Press and The Washington Post.James Blight, 26, was arrested Saturday and charged with grand theft auto and trespassing.Blight allegedly stole the backhoe from a nearby construction site and then tore through a nearby neighbor, driving through lawns and flattening Biden-Harris signs in the process. He also allegedly stole the signs from some residents' yards.NBC News reports that during the joyride, Blight allegedly knocked down a speed limit sign.Blight told police that he "had been drinking whiskey all day and did not remember most of the day," Haines City public information officer Mike Haines told NBC News. "He said that he couldn't help but hit the Joe Biden signs and acknowledged to taking down a fence in the process."According to The Associated Press, the city's former vice mayor, Adam Burgess, lives in the neighborhood, which is predominantly Black. In a Facebook Live video, Burgess called the incident a "hate crime."In addition to grand theft auto and trespassing, NBC News reports that Blight could face more charges in the coming days. 1296

A huge fundraiser to support both students and historically black colleges and universities has decided to go virtual this year. United Negro College Fund says now, more than ever, help is needed to not only keep students applying, but to keep them enrolled in school.Even as a kid, Velvet Gunn was always singing, dancing, writing and painting. She owes that support to her mom, who she says would let Velvet follow her every whim. “She’s extremely happy that I got my degree but also that I’m getting paid for my art!” Gunn said.Gunn calls herself a "creative freelancer." “I taught theater for 10 years, I paint, I sing, wherever my creativity brings me, I do graphic art, I do web design," Gunn said. But, getting to where she is today wasn't easy. “When I went to college or was deciding to go to college I knew I wanted to do something in the arts, I had the talent and the determination, but I didn’t have the money," Gunn said.She had her eye on Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. They were going to give her just the right amount of money for her to attend. Things were going well, until her junior year when she ran out of money. “I went on the website, I had heard of UNCF before but I had never gone on the site until my junior year. And they saved me. It was so easy, it was personal," Gunn said.Right on time, the funding came in and Velvet was able to graduate. Now, she uses her degree to support herself and her art. Brian Bridges, Vice President of Research and Member Engagement at the United Negro College Fund says stories like Velvet's are what drive the organization to continuously look for support. Since 1944, the organization has helped over 500,000 students get an education, and raised over billion dollars for students and colleges.“To hear some of these students, their testimonials sometimes, teary eyed, telling stories how they wouldn’t have gone to college without the UNCF scholarship or how they didn’t have an idea where their life might have gone or given the background they came from this would be transformative simply because of the scholarship UNCF gave them," Bridges said.UNCF surveyed more than 5,000 students across their member institutions to understand how the pandemic was affecting them. The results were disheartening. “Over half said their financial stability had declined during COVID-19, 40 percent said mental well-being had declined and those were 2 and 3 times more likely to want to transfer to be closer to home to help their family,” said Bridges.And he says, while some reported mental improvement, their responses said otherwise. "Those stories are heartbreaking. 'I don’t know where my next meal is from, everyone in my household is unemployed, I’ve had to take on 50 hours of work in a hospital rife with COVID and it’s a mental strain on me.'”The organization's annual Walk for Education is one of the many fundraisers that supports students. This September 19th, the walk will be virtual. They're urging people to participate any way they can.“Whether they want to walk, run, walk, bike, dance, we encourage any type of activity along with the support that would come with that in order to participate in the walk and be supportive of UNCF," said Bridges.He says he wants people to know that all the money they raise goes to support students and the schools they attend. That money supported students like Velvet, who says she'll do anything for UNCF.“Every time UNCF has something or is needing someone I’m like 'let me know, I will scream to the heavens and let people know about what you all do,'" Gunn said. 3593
