DETROIT — Two Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers helped save a life Friday afternoon. The department says officer Ben Lasher was patrolling Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan when around 12:31 p.m. Michigan State Police notified him of a woman threatening to jump off the MacArthur Bridge. "She was very upset," Lasher said. "She was crying. She was looking over her shoulder at the river. I was quite concerned because she didn't want me to come across the barricade."At the scene, Lasher witnessed the woman crying while standing next to the guard rail of the bridge. “She asked me to stay by my patrol truck at first,” Lasher said. “I was able to talk to her and find out her name."Lasher continued talking with the woman, while officer Steven Converse — who was also patrolling Belle Isle — arrived to the scene. "The bridge isn't very tall but the cold water, the body won't accept," Lasher said. "You won't do well in that environment very long."Converse approached where the woman and Lasher were standing and helped convince her to go with them to Lasher's patrol truck and seek professional help. After several minutes, the woman agreed, and the officers helped her climb over the barricade and into the patrol truck for safety."Holiday seasons are hard," said Lasher. "A lot of people have strong feelings, good or bad, and this young lady was having a hard time. And I was able to be in the right place at the right time."What helped, in part, was the training these officers receive for these types of situations.“Part of what conservation officers are taught is to engage in conversation with the suicidal person and to ask what has happened that has brought them to this point of suicide,” said Michael Comer, a contract police psychologist for the DNR Law Enforcement Division. “COs listen to the person's story, establish a rapport and demonstrate that they care about the suicidal person. They have been taught that they will not be able to change the person's mind until they first understand the person's story and despair.”The woman was taken to a local hospital for a check-up. According to the DNR, the scene was cleared around 1:01 p.m., exactly 30 minutes after officer Lasher received the original call. "There's hope for tomorrow," Lasher said he told the woman. (KGTV) - The Del Mar City Council voted to add more enforcement to their community, specifically targeting people who are not following county health orders regarding masks.The city currently contracts with the sheriff’s department for one single deputy to be on the clock 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but with this new addition, two more part-time deputies will be added. The two will work four hours a week, likely on the weekends, patrolling the streets as usual, with an extra eye on people violating county health orders. The focus will be on education first, but violations could result in a misdemeanor costing up to ,000. That money does not go back to the city of Del Mar, but rather to the county.City Councilman Dave Druker has lived in Del Mar for 34 years. (KGTV) - Reports of a positive COVID-19 test at an East County Catholic church are raising concerns about possible exposure.The church is Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Descanso. On a Facebook post, a board member of the Descanso Town Hall reported a positive case was just revealed to the church pastor by a parishioner. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of San Diego says the parishioner is a volunteer who helps prepare the altar for services. She wore a mask and maintained social distance.According to the post, "the person who tested positive was actively involved in all mass and church activities while having symptoms for a week so exposure is possible."The woman remains ill and is now in quarantine at home.The post goes on to explain that exposure was possible for anyone who went to mass in the past two weeks, which includes some 16 different services.It's unclear how many people that totals, but one parishioner tells ABC 10News pre-pandemic attendance for bigger masses numbered in the dozens.The apparent positive test comes amid coronavirus shutdown orders banning indoor church services in the county.The Diocese says the pastor, Father Enrique Fuentes, received a coronavirus test. Any outdoor masses won't take place until the result is known.According to the Diocese, the county has not yet contacted the church about the positive case, but the pastor decided to go ahead and close the church for deep cleaning and inform other volunteers she was in contact with. 1539
