For some families, the pandemic added even more waiting time as countries shut down.However, as travel opens back up, agencies are finding ways to help families complete their adoptions, like the adoption of Maria Camila in Colombia.“For most of the summer, we were waiting for just word we were able to travel to Columbia. Just waiting for them to open up,” Seth Christensen said. Seth and Gwen Christensen live in the U.S. with their three children. They started the process of adopting another child years ago, and just this October, they were able to travel to Colombia and bring her home.“That was a stressful time but we made it. We made it to Columbia,” Gwen said.We interviewed Seth and Gwen back in May, right after they went to Colombia for two weeks in March to adopt Maria Camila. However, they had to return to the U.S. without her due to COVID-19 and government closures.“Everything was just going swimmingly until, sorry they shut down all the courts in the whole country,” they explained back in May. “We had to send her back to her group home and it was awful. But she was old enough, she kind of understood, we cried and she was like OK.”So they waited, talking with their adopted daughter over FaceTime all summer until October, when they were invited back into Colombia to complete the process.“It was a complete do over. All the fees, all the appeals, everything,” Gwen explained. “But we got through faster than some families did.”“There were so many parents going through the system at that point than is normal that everyone was just overwhelmed,” Seth said about their most recent experience in the country. Due to the delay time, many families took the first chance they could get to return and finish adoptions.Seth and Gwen spent a month in Colombia, finalizing documents to bring Maria Camila back to the U.S. It's a process Gwen said usually would take less than three weeks, but for them took two separate trips.“There has been a backlog on the travel piece,” said Hollen Frazier, President at All God's Children International. The agency facilitates adoptions from a number of countries, including the adoption of Maria Camila. While the process is slower right now due to countries catching up, quarantine periods and other processes, she said adopted kids from most countries are finally getting home.“In the last six months we’ve seen kids come home from Bulgaria, Haiti, Columbia,” she said. Except for those from China. “All of our families from China, they’re all still stuck. Completely stuck,” Frazier explained.Most countries are finding ways to complete the adoption process safely after many were put on hold all summer. “Because there were so many other families around it definitely helps to kind of see other people in the same situation,” Seth said.After a long wait, Maria Camila now lives in the U.S. with her new siblings. “They’ve been excited to meet her and play with her and introduce her to things,” Seth said.The 12-year-old 6th grader started school this month. “She just started online school this week and that’s an adventure,” Gwen said. 3159

(KGTV) - Six months after the West Fire ripped through Alpine, residents still have an immense amount of work to do to rebuild.Colin Campbell's parents owned the Campbell Creek Ranch for 13 years before it burned in July. Campbell spoke with 10News in August at a benefit that raised at least ,000 for the victims of the fire.Sunday, on the six month anniversary of the fire, Campbell walked through the ranch, lending a window into his memories.Surrounding him, the ranch lay much the same as the day after the fire. Ashes and bricks covering the foundation of his parent's home, the pool drained, the white fence lining the driveway, melted. As he looked around him, he saw the ghost of what had been.He looked at the pool, and spoke of an old pact he made with his two sons, "at any time, on the coldest day of the year, I would plunge into the pool, and they always took it upon me to do it, and their timing was impeccable," he said laughing. His sons and wife would jump in after him.At the house, his fondest memory was of a train set his parents built for his boys. He described the wooden track built at knee height, right in front of the vast fireplace to ensure the kids were warm while playing happily for hours, "we spoiled them with trains."Over the past six months, volunteers and family members sifted through soot, unearthing treasures."Man it absolutely has been meaningful," Campbell said poignantly, "in fact there has been a picture of my wife, our wedding 23 years ago, that somehow, someway came out of the rubble."He was also struck by the signs of hope sprouting around the grounds, "you can see now it is greening up, in the mountainsides, they are growing back, and it's just incredible that the environment, they just reinvigorate themselves." He said the boys are young teens now and learning, while cleaning up the ranch, how nature prevails.Campbell's fight to protect the property is not over. "The erosion is our main concern," he said. With help from local leaders, sand bags held the weak soil mostly in place after recent rain.Campbell said he's incredibly thankful for the continued support of the community, and hopes in the next two years to rebuild and move his parents back onto the ranch. 2256

Some people are reporting having to wait nearly two weeks for results, in some cases.Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute says their new saliva test could be a real game-changer in getting a better handle on this pandemic.On July 10, ABC15 met Heidy Gonzales who was in line for free testing through the HeroZona Foundation at South Mountain Community College."There are some people who have been coming twice, three times," she explained.That was the story for another young woman we met, Mika, who says she had been to the same testing site the day before and was turned away. After extended family tested positive, she didn't want to take any chances. She says, she didn't have a choice but to come back. And it's not just long lines but also long wait times, with some people waiting as long as two weeks to get results. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego County Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman whose home caught fire in Alpine Monday morning. The flames started in a granny flat at the home at 3679 E. Victoria Drive, firefighters reported. At the time, winds were about 30 miles an hour with low humidity.Sheryl Ruiz, 36, was inside the granny flat and escaped without injury.Deputies said a search of the home led to the discovery of illegal drugs and a firearm, and arrested Ruiz.Lakeside and Viejas Fire crews are investigating the cause of the fire.  566
