SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean state media say leader Kim Jong Un urged officials to maintain alertness against the coronavirus, warning that complacency risked “unimaginable and irretrievable crisis." Despite the warning, Kim reaffirmed North Korea’s claim to not have had a single case of COVID-19. The country described its anti-virus efforts as a matter of national existence earlier this year. The reports on Thursday's high-level ruling party meeting say Kim stressed the need for vigilance as the virus continues to spread in neighboring countries.Experts say North Korea's lockdown is hurting an economy already battered by U.S.-led sanctions over its nuclear weapons program. 695

Sonna Anderson was enjoying a horseback ride through the Badlands in North Dakota in September 2017 when her horse, Cody, got spooked, jerked toward a fence and tripped on a cow track in the dirt. The horse rolled onto Anderson, who hit her head, briefly lost consciousness and broke three ribs. The 911 transcript shows that an ambulance reached the 60-year-old judge from Bismarck within 20 minutes. Anderson was secured on a backboard and ready to go when an air ambulance, a helicopter with a medical crew, also landed at the scene. Anderson says her husband asked repeatedly whether the ground ambulance crew could take her by ground; there was a hospital less than an hour's drive away."But he was told that [the air ambulance] was necessary. They never told him why it was necessary or how much it cost, but they insisted I had to go by air ambulance," Anderson said. "But it's so odd there is nothing in the record that indicated it was time-sensitive or that I needed to be airlifted."For that one helicopter ride, to a hospital farther away in Bismarck, records show that Valley Med Flight charged Anderson ,727.26. Sanford Health Plan, her insurance, paid ,697.73. That left Anderson with a ,029.53 bill.Valley Med Flight did not respond to requests for comment."It shocked me," Anderson said. "I kept thinking, 'my God.' I got a copy of the 911 and air ambulance report to see how long they actually spent with me, when really, it was only around 45 minutes. I wrote [the air ambulance company] a letter telling them that I thought it was all outrageous." 1583

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho — Lori Vallow Daybell faces additional charges in connection to the disappearance and death of her children.Vallow was charged late Monday with two counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Coronavirus cases in Florida surpassed 100,000 on Monday, part of an alarming surge across the U.S. West and South as states reopen for business and many Americans resist wearing masks or keeping their distance. Some public health officials are warning that progress won after months of lockdowns could be slipping. And hospitals in areas seeing an uptick in cases are warning that intensive care beds were filling again, and urging communities to do what it takes to control any new outbreaks. An Associated Press analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University finds that new daily confirmed coronavirus cases across the country are up to more than 26,000 a day, up from about 21,000 a day two weeks ago."It is possible to open up at a judicious pace and coexist with the virus, but it requires millions and millions of people to do the right thing. Right now, we don’t have that," because people have let their guard down, Dr. Marc Boom, CEO and president of Houston Methodist Hospital, told the AP. Over 120,000 deaths in the U.S. have been blamed on the virus. 1107

Six days after Hurricane Michael roared ashore, wreaking havoc on the Florida Panhandle, a bit of good news has emerged in hard-hit Mexico Beach. On Monday, authorities announced both that residents can begin returning home this week and that the estimate for the number of people unaccounted for has been lowered from at least 30 to three.Mexico Beach took the hardest punch from Michael when the storm made landfall six days ago.Besides the widespread destruction, town police say two people were killed there, including one body found Monday. After standing by for days as authorities worked to secure the area and complete search and rescue, Mexico Beach residents learned Monday that they can return home on Wednesday.About 280 of the town's 1,200 residents had said they planned to ride out the storm, but the town's mayor said many fled at the last minute when Michael quickly gained strength.Authorities initially said they could not account for 30 to 35 people but police Monday lowered that number to three missing. 1031
