ALGIERS, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo held talks Wednesday with Abdelaziz Ziari, speaker of the Algerian National Assembly, on issues of common concern and they agreed to boost bilateral relations and cement cooperation between the two parliaments.     China and Algeria always handle the bilateral relations from a strategic perspective, said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), highlighting that the relations have endured the test of time since the two countries established diplomatic relations 50 years ago.     Wu expressed his appreciation of Algeria's adherence to the one-China policy, noting that China respects the choice Algerian people have made on path to develop their own nation.     China feels satisfied with the current bilateral cooperation especially with the two-way collaboration at multilateral occasions on issues of UN reform, human rights and anti-terrorism, he said.     Wu offered a four-point proposal to promote China-Algeria relations: firstly, maintain high-level exchange and increase political mutual trust; secondly, expand the substantial cooperation especially in infrastructure, agriculture and energy for mutual benefit; thirdly, intensify the exchange on humanitarian issues to carry out the traditional friendship; and lastly, strengthen coordination with an aim to safeguard the common interests.     Ziari, for his part, called Wu's visit to Algeria "a big event "for the bilateral relations and "a symbol" marking a higher level of the inter-parliamentary cooperation.     The speaker agreed with Wu's views on the bilateral relations and recalled the fact that China was the first non-Arab country who recognized Algeria's independence and forged the diplomatic relations with it, while expressing his gratitude to China's assistance to Algeria's national development. Wu spoke highly of the bilateral relations, saying the ties between the two nations are "in their best time."     Wu said the good political relations should work effectively to promote the development of the trade cooperation, pledging that China would make concerted efforts with Algeria to step up cooperation with mutual benefit and give a fully play to the two business communities especially on some big projects which could help push forward the overall development. ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Sunday that China's relations with Ethiopia have been developing quite rapidly in recent years and have been pushed up to a higher level.     He made the statement during talks with Speaker of Ethiopian Council of People's Representatives Teshome Toga.     "Since our countries established foreign relations with each other, especially, since their comprehensive cooperation partnership was formed in 2003, high-level exchanges between our two countries have been more frequent and bilateral trade has been shooting up," Wu said.     "Now our relations have ushered in a new era," he added.     Wu said that both China and Ethiopia are developing countries and therefore face the similar issues such as economic development. The rapid booming of both economies have provided new opportunities for deeper and wider cooperation.     "This is conducive to the welfare and the basic interests of both countries and peoples, as well as constructive to world's peace and prosperity," Wu said.     The Ethiopian speaker agreed with Wu's comments on relations of the two countries and said that Wu's Africa tour, especially, the visit to Ethiopia, is of high importance and can further boost bilateral ties.     Teshome Toga also thanked China for its unconditional support for Ethiopia, adding that the two countries can cooperate better in trade, investment and finance sectors.     He said that Ethiopia will, as it has done in the past, continue to stick to "One China" policy and Wu expressed his appreciation for his Ethiopian counterpart's firm commitment as such.     Wu is on a five-African nation tour. Ethiopia is the third leg of his two-week-long visit to Africa.

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan's chief negotiator Ching Pin-kung hailed Wednesday significant progress on cross-Straits relations over the past year.     The cross-Straits relations in 2008 have made several breakthroughs, said Chiang, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), at Wednesday's press conference.     SEF and mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), the two main negotiation bodies, held their first meeting in Beijing last June after the talks were suspended for almost 10 years. The second meeting was held in Taiwan in November.     The two sides reached six agreements after the two rounds of talks, including the historical direct links of transport, trade and post services which started on December 15.     "With all these breakthroughs, the cross-Straits ties have turned to be normal and practical with mutual trust and understanding," Chiang said.     Chiang said SEF would persist with building "positive" and "interactive" cross-Straits relations in the coming new year.     The main topics in the next round of the talks between the mainland and Taiwan, scheduled for later this year, would include joint efforts on cracking down on crimes, financial cooperation and regular cross-Straits flights, Chiang said.     Board members, supervisors and consultants in SEF planned to visit the mainland in 2009, according to Chiang.

LIMA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia Wednesday in Lima for talks on how to deepen comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and the Latin American nation.     The meeting took place soon after the Chinese leader's arrival in the Peruvian capital from Havana.     In a written statement issued upon his arrival here, the Chinese president said he will exchange views with Garcia and other Peruvian leaders on ways to deepen bilateral ties.     Following their talks, the two leaders will attend a signing ceremony of documents on cooperation in trade, customs, quality control and poverty reduction.     Peru is one of China's major trading partners in Latin America,with two-way trade totaling 6 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, a 53 percent increase over the previous year.     While in Lima, Hu will attend the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which will focus on the world financial crisis, support for the Doha round oftrade talks, food and energy security, and regional economic integration.     The Chinese president will also meet with leaders of several APEC member economies on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders offered their Spring Festival greetings to the nation at a gathering to mark the coming Lunar New Year here Saturday.     President Hu Jintao chaired the gathering of more than 4,000 people from various sections of society.     On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council, Hu, who is general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, conveyed festival greetings to all Chinese people and his thanks to the friends of China across the world.     Premier Wen Jiabao, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a speech.     2008 was an extraordinary year for China, in which the country succeeded in fighting the severe winter weather, the May 12 earthquake, in hosting the Beijing Olympics and launching the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft and actively coping with the current international financial crisis, he said.     The achievements "demonstrated that no difficulty could defeat the great Chinese people and the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics will be broadened," he said.     The country will embrace the 60th founding anniversary of new China in 2009, Wen said.     Priority should be given to maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth this year. This will be achieved through expanding domestic demand especially consumption demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, he said.     All will ultimately target maximally satisfying people's increasing material and cultural needs, he added.     In 2009, China will enhance and improve macroeconomic control efforts and carry out an active fiscal policy, as well as a moderately easy monetary policy, he said.     "We have the confidence and the ability to overcome various difficulties and achieve further development," he added.     The government will pool strength of the nation to do some practical things for the people, including expanding employment, improving the social security system, promoting medicare system reform, enhancing development of the cultural industry, and ensuring smooth rebuilding in disaster-hit areas, he said.     The government will also strive to solve people's housing difficulties and to provide satisfactory education that ensures no child drops out of school because of financial difficulties, he said.     Other leaders, including Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, also attended the gathering.     Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional Chinese festival of family reunion. It falls on Jan. 26 this year.
