SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department has identified the officer involved in an East Village shooting over the weekend as Andres Ruiz. The department says Ruiz is assigned to the Canine Unit and has been with the department for more than 11 years. The incident started just before 10 p.m. on May 23 at an apartment complex on Park Boulevard and Market Street. Police were called to the complex following reports of a woman trowing objects from a window. When they arrived, officers found broken glass and furniture on the sidewalk below the unit. RELATED: Woman hurt in officer-involved shooting in East VillageAuthorities say the woman refused to listen and brandished a knife, continuing to throw objects from the window and refusing to come out of the building, prompting police to force their way into the building. After the woman locked herself into the bathroom, police used verbal direction, chemical agents, and a police canine in an effort to take the woman into custody. When officers made their way into the bathroom, the department says the woman grabbed and punched the canine and threatened officers with the knife. “One officer fearing that he was going to be struck or stabbed with a knife, fired at least one round striking the female,” said Capt. Rich Freedman of the San Diego Police Department.The woman was treated and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured, but some people were hit by objects that were thrown out of the window. The suspect has only been identified as a 26-year-old San Diego resident. 1593

According to a new 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll released Tuesday evening, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has moved into the lead with 25%. In another shakeup, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomerg surged into second place at 21%.Former Vice President had been the leader in each 10News/Union-Tribune poll taken this election cycle until this latest result. In the new poll, Biden fell to third place at 15%, with former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 12%. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County District Attorney’s office released Friday a detailed report and video evidence in the death of a woman arrested by San Diego Police. Aleah Jenkins, 24, was arrested Nov. 27 on an outstanding warrant for meth possession during a traffic stop in University City. The video released at a news conference Friday shows Jenkins vomiting in the back of a patrol car. The officer initially called for medical aid but it was called off because Jenkins said her illness was due to pregnancy. That was not true, according to District Attorney Summer Stephan. There were several points when Jenkins yelled and asked for help in the back of the patrol car. Officers took Jenkins to SDPD headquarters downtown, where she collapsed. Jenkins was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center and died Dec. 6. A spokesperson for the Jenkins family said San Diego Police could have prevented Jenkins’ death by getting her help when she said she didn’t feel well.The autopsy indicated Jenkins had PCP, THC, morphine, and meth in her system, but no injuries which would have caused her death. District Attorney Summer Stephan said at a news conference Friday that no charges would be filed against the officer who arrested Jenkins after a careful review of the evidence. "I looked at the fact that at the period of time where he didn't get a prompt response he pulled over he pulled over and physically looked at her,” Stephan said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The purple most restrictive tier for coronavirus guidelines goes into effect Saturday forcing many museums around San Diego County to close their doors once again."It really wasn't a surprise and when this all first started happening I think we realized that there wasn't going to be a magic date that everything was going to be better," James Haddan, Senior Director of Development and External Communications at the Museum of Us, said they've been anticipating the county's fall back into the purple tier."We made some hard choices initially, right away," Haddan said they made difficult cuts to staff at the beginning of the pandemic, hoping to sustain for the next two years."It has been extremely difficult for arts and cultural organizations throughout the city and Balboa Park would be no different," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said while many of the museums must close, there are still things to do at the park. The Japanese Friendship Garden, Spanish Village, and restaurants are open.In La Jolla, the Birch Aquarium is shifting too. They reopened in July and are creating as many exhibits as they can outside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of dogs and their owners were out for the annual Humane Society Walk for Animals at Liberty Station Saturday morning. The event raises money for all animals at the humane society, including pets that have been abused, injured or orphaned.  287
