WASHINGTON, D.C. – Miles Taylor, a former chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, revealed Wednesday that he's the anonymous senior Trump administration official who wrote a scathing book last year that criticizes the president."Donald Trump is a man without character. It’s why I wrote “A Warning”...and it’s why me & my colleagues have spoken out against him (in our own names) for months," Taylor announced on Twitter. "It’s time for everyone to step out of the shadows."Read Taylor's full statement here.Taylor's anonymously written book “A Warning” paints a chilling portrait of President Donald Trump as cruel, inept and a danger to the nation he was elected to lead, The Washington Post reports. The book’s description on Amazon says it was meant to motivate readers to “consider how we judge our nation's leaders, and illuminate the consequences of re-electing a commander in chief unfit for the role.”The book was published in November 2019, more than a year after The New York Times published a bombshell op-ed essay by the same anonymous author. In the op-ed, the author claimed to be among a group of people in the White House who were working to keep Trump’s reckless impulses in check for the good of the country. As “part of the resistance inside the Trump administration,” the article’s author said the group believed Trump acts in a manner that is “detrimental to the health of our democracy” and that they vowed to do what they can to “preserve our democratic institutions.”The book and article have been criticized by the president and members of his administration. It also sparked a long guessing game in Washington to figure out who the author was.The Times reports that Taylor resigned from DHS in June 2019 and then went public with his criticism of Trump this past summer. He has since endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president. 1890

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Inside one Washington D.C. bicycle repair shop is a cacophony of sounds, where both the bicycles and employees get a chance they may not have otherwise.“Working with your hands is still very important,” said Keith Jackson, operations manager at Gearin’ Up Bicycles. The nonprofit trains Black teens about everything it takes to run a bike shop.“For a lot of the young Black youth, this is really their only opportunity to get their feet wet in a bicycle business,” Jackson said. It’s an opportunity Daiquan Medley knows firsthand.“I’ve been here a long time now,” he said.Medley started coming to Gearin’ Up Bicycles several years ago, eventually working his way up to youth shop manager. It is quite a journey for someone who didn’t take to bicycling right away.“I couldn’t ride at first,” he said.Eventually, though, Medley picked it up and now envisions a future full of bicycles.“I would still have a full-service bike shop,” Medley said, “but then also have programs within it to actually still be able to teach people and they can learn how to maintain their bike on their own.”It’s an inspiration drawn from Gearin’ Up Bicycles, which helps young people build their own bicycles to keep and teaches them how to fix donated bikes that otherwise may have ended up in a landfill.“Our main goal obviously is workforce development, but I hope they get a sense of confidence and empowerment that they can do any job once they leave here,” said Lauren Shutler, the organization’s outreach coordinator. The repaired bicycles are then resold during Saturday sales, which have grown increasingly popular during the pandemic’s global bicycle shortage.“Our general sales are up 60%,” Jackson said. “Our bicycle sales are up 330% over last year.”The money from the sales then goes back into the nonprofit, though they say there’s always room for more.“As a nonprofit, we need people to come in and support us in that way,” Shutler said. It’s all part of the program to keep these wheels, and lives, in motion.“We've got them,” Jackson said. For more information on Gearin’ Up Bicycles and how you can help, click here. 2135
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump thinks it's a good idea if daylight saving time becomes permanent.A federal law specifies that daylight time applies from 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March until 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November in areas that do not specifically exempt themselves. More than two dozen states are considering measures to avoid the twice-yearly clock change.Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Vern Buchanan, both of Florida, introduced measures last week to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. While federal law allows states to opt into standard time permanently — which Hawaii and Arizona have done — the reverse is prohibited and requires congressional action.Trump tweeted Monday that making daylight saving time permanent is "O.K. with me!" 787
WASHINGTON (AP) — With a bit of rejiggering, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump played host Sunday to hundreds of super-heroes, unicorns, skeletons and even a miniature version of themselves as part of a Halloween celebration at the White House. In years past, the president and first lady personally handed candy to the costume-clad kids, but this year, the treats were provided as participants walked along a path on the South Lawn. The kids still got to briefly meet the president and first lady though, who waved and offered words of encouragement from a safe distance about how much they liked the costumes.Trump was particularly pleased with a young boy with a distinctly Trump head of hair and a partner who did her best Mrs. Trump impersonation. The president motioned for them to turn and pose for the cameras, and they happily agreed.Another tot, a true princess it appeared, was so smitten with the cameras that she kept waving at them as she walked along, never noticing the VIPs behind her. 1026
