SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. -- With wildfires burning across the West Coast and coronavirus concerns impacting communities, emergency evacuation shelters in California are facing crisis and chaos.In Santa Cruz County, leaders say local fires have displaced about one in every five residents.That includes Anthony Koppe, who lost his house in Boulder Creek during the CZU fire.“I don’t want to dwell on it too much. you know,” he said. “It’s happened and we got to move on.”Koppe and many others from California’s Central Coast are now seeking help at a local recovery resource center where new safety measures have been added to combat COVID-19.“If somebody has something, instead of passing it on, you can catch it at the door,” he said.Just to get in those doors, people have to pass a pretty strict health screening, like filling out an extensive questionnaire and getting your temperature taken with a new touchless thermometer.“It’s impacted everything,” Rosemary Anderson, emergency services manager for the County of Santa Cruz, said about how COVID-19 has changed how emergency evacuations shelters are operating.Gone are the days of hundreds of cots stuffed in an auditorium. Now, places like Kaiser Permanente Arena, which normally holds 25,000 people, has a maximum capacity of 68.“Everything was measured out so each of the tables and the resources are all 6 feet apart and people can interact from a distance where its COVID safe,” Anderson said.COVID-19 concerns have also impacted other disaster relief organizations.“Where we’d normally have 500 people in a gym, now we’re only doing about 50,” said Tony Briggs of the American Red Cross.Briggs says the coronavirus has forced his teams to change how they help people cope with disaster during this pandemic.“Now, with COVID, we can do all the listening, but you can’t do the contact,” he said. “And for some people, that hug is a really, really big deal.”Even with the added attention to detail, leaders in Santa Cruz are expecting coronavirus transmission rates to increase because more people are coming in contact at these resource centers.“If something is wrong with somebody, I definitely don’t want to catch it or my lady or my son,” Koppe said.While people like Koppe may have lost their homes, these new safety measures haven’t let them lose hope“It definitely gives me peace of mind,” he said. 2375

But many are saying it also has lingering effects on the tourism industry, both in San Diego and Tijuana.Sunday, Nov. 25, seemed like the beginning of the end for Wes Barba, the owner and operator of Baja Border Tours. The San Diego-based small group tour company specializes in day trips to Mexico.“It’s killing me. It’s really killing me,” West Barba said. “We go to Ensenada, Rosarito, and Tijuana, and the Guadalupe Valley for wine tasting."After the migrant caravan rush toward San Ysidro, Barba's phones have been ringing off the hook with last-minute cancellations.“They say ‘It’s going to be a problem coming back. Are we going to be in danger?’” Barba said. Each day trip, Barba usually has ten clients. Not anymore. With more clients canceling daily, he has no choice but to cancel the trips altogether.“10 customers to one customer. My profit went from 0 to zero a day,” Barba said. Barba said his counterparts in Mexico are also feeling the tourism lull. There are several reports of popular tourists areas in Rosarito, looking like ghost towns. Barba had no clients Sunday but still drove his tour van south of the border.“I have a great, great customer named Kathleen, and she put together her neighbors, and we put all the clothes together,” Barba said.Barba's customer inspired him and his family to gather clothes, shoes, and anything else he thought would help the migrants stuck in Tijuana. He put those donations into a suitcase and drove them to the migrant camps. He was struck by the conditions he saw first-hand.“Sleeping on the ground, under those tents. It gets me,” Barba said. Barba is fully aware that the recipients of his donations are the reason for his company’s dismal profits. But at the end of the day, he said his heart wins over his pocketbook. “Even though they are affecting our business, it’s not about ‘We hate you. You guys aren’t helping us. We’re not going to help you.’ No, it’s not like that. We actually want to give back also. Listen, we are all humans. We need to help each other,” he said. Barba is a proud U.S. citizen. He became one after he and his American wife escaped dangerous conditions in Colombia decades ago. SANDUSKY, Ohio — Just as summer began, so did the immigration raids in northeast Ohio.The first one happened on June 5 at Corsos, a garden and flower center in Sandusky, Ohio where 114 people were arrested as their workday started.Two weeks later, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided another company called Fresh Mark. ICE raided all three of the company's locations, including the one in Canton, Ohio. More than 140 workers were arrested there, many of them accused of using false identification to get their jobs."We want to support our families and we want to protect and defend them so that they don't get split apart which you see is happening all over the place," said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in northeast Ohio.Dahlberg and the folks at HOLA Ohio stepped in to pay some of the bonds for those arrested in Sandusky."So far we've helped 21 of the farm workers, so we post the bonds for them at the Cleveland Heights deportation office," Dahlberg said.HOLA Ohio has raised ,000 to put towards bonding out the workers, and so far they used over ,000.Dahlberg said the family reunions have been bittersweet."When you see those reunions and you can deliver mom to the children or dad back to the household and the people are just so happy," she said. "There's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of sadness. Even though mom or dad is home, it's just a long process to try to stay here with their families."Dahlberg said although controversial, she is proud of the work she's doing."People will say 'oh you're helping illegals, you are helping people who are breaking the law,'" Dahlberg said.
