WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats have driven a temporary extension of a popular subsidy program for small businesses through the GOP-controlled Senate.Maryland Democrat Ben Cardin pushed for the extension of the Paycheck Protection Program hours before a deadline for applying for the program, which was created in March and has been modified twice.The measure is not a done deal though. It must also pass the house and be signed by President Donald Trump.If approved by Trump and the House, the new deadline for businesses to apply for PPP loans would be pushed back to Aug. 8.The proposed extension is an unexpected development that comes as spikes in coronavirus cases in many states are causing renewed shutdowns of bars and other businesses.The pressure swayed Republicans controlling the Senate, who have delayed consideration of a fifth coronavirus relief bill and are preparing to go home for a two-week recess.About 4.8 million businesses received a PPP loan, with a total of 9 billion lent out. But as of Tuesday, there was still more than 0 billion left in the pot.As to why that is, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council says there's a few reasons, like concerns over how much would actually be forgiven, constantly changing rules, and strict limits to how the money can be used.“Not all businesses are the same. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amid reports that the FDA is considering tougher standards for the authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine, President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that the White House could override that decision.The Washington Post and CNN report that the FDA is expected to roll out the new standard for emergency authorization of a vaccine soon, which would make it exceedingly difficult for a vaccine to be cleared by Election Day.The FDA is expected to issue the guidance to increase transparency and public trust in the potential vaccine, The Post reports. The news comes as recent polls show Americans are increasingly skeptical about the vaccine process.As the president campaigns for reelection, he has repeatedly said he expects to have a coronavirus vaccine available to the public around Nov. 3 and that he would like to see one offered around that time.During a briefing on Wednesday, Trump warned that his administration might reject the FDA’s tougher standards.“We're looking at that and that has to be approved by the White House,” Trump told reporters. “We may or may not approve it. WAUKESHA -- A train struck and killed a pedestrian and their dog Monday morning in Waukesha, Wisconsin.Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann told Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the train hit a pedestrian and a dog around 6:40 a.m. near Barstow and Carroll.The train ended up stopping at Broadway Street in Waukesha for roughly two hours -- which blocked eight streets in the downtown Waukesha area during the morning commute.Police are still at the scene investigating and have not released any other information.  558

It's one way they've united in one voice to try to make a difference.  But some students are using art, and billboards, to send a message of their own.           For Yoki Ogbai, the overalls she's painting are more than a school project"Our colors are red and white," Ogbai said. "So a lot of wings a lot of bows glitter all types of crazy.The overalls are her latest work of art."Art for me is like a big sense of release," Ogbai said.Born in East Africa, she used art as expression when she moved to the U.S and a way for people to see her for who she is."A lot of times people don't really try to understand and don't really try to get to know a person before creating their onw ways," Ogbai said.  "Their own idea of who you are."So when she heard about a contest called the "Healing As One" campaign, she figured it would be an opportunity to inspire thousands to take a look at things in a different way."Cause he's kind of taking a picture and was like through the lens," Ogbai said.That idea grew into a billboard on a busy intersection that reads, "See Me, I Am Denver.""To be seen is to be acknowledged for everything you are and not for what you're expected to be," Ogbai says.Ogbai's billboard is just one of several in the Healing As One initiative. The topics are timely. One reads education not deportation. And others, encourage people to have courage and hope.Albany Reynolds designed the hope billboard."For me it's amazing because I've always been someone who wanted to speak out about issues like that," Reynolds said.  "And just bring attention to that."She placed the word over a picture she took of her classmate Kelly."It's giving us leeway to have artistic freedom and to put our ideas out there," Reynolds said. "And to say I want to represent hope and to have that on an actual billboard it's a good opportunity."In a time with young people across the country speaking out about the issues important to them, this group believes doing that through art can be just as powerful."If you look at any big historical changes throughout history art has been a very big part of that," Reynolds said."Even though I am just another person using my voice and what I know what I can do I really am able to make some sort of impact in someone’s life," Ogbai said.Inspiring change through billboards, advertising messages of a different kind. 2526
