BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to the United States, during which he reached important consensus with U.S. President Barack Obama on building a cooperative China-U.S. partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, has been closely followed by world media. The visit has drawn "unprecedented" world attention, said Gu Xuewu, director of the Center for Global Studies at the University of Bonn.NEW CHAPTER IN DEVELOPMENT OF CHINA-U.S. TIESCommenting on Hu's visit, which occurred at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, Professor Severino Cabral, director of Brazil's China and Asia-Pacific Research Institute, said the visit opened a new epoch for China-U.S. relations. The resumption of dialogue between the world's two major economies, which itself is a significant event, would exert great influence on the new world agenda, and hopefully help eliminate the residual cold war mentality and take bilateral relations to a new era, he said.Chen Kang, professor at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, said that the joint statement issued by the two sides during Hu's stay -- built upon bilateral efforts to establish a cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit -- is a clear reflection of the two countries' resolution and pragmatic attitude in jointly meeting global challenges.China Press USA, a New York-based Chinese language newspaper, said in an editorial that the two countries' commitment to building an all-round and mutually beneficial, win-win economic partnership, as put in their joint statement, is the greatest achievement that comes out of the meeting between the leaders of the two countries in the economic sphere.Nouvelles D'Europe, a major Chinese language newspaper in France, said in an editorial that Hu's visit yielded fruitful results which are indispensable to world peace and development. In their joint statement, the two countries for the first time defined that China-U.S. partnership is based on mutual respect and mutual benefit. Stable China-U.S. relations contribute to world stability, and a win-win scenario between China and the United States is conducive to a scenario of multi-party-win in a multipolar world, it said.International Daily News, an Indonesian newspaper, said that Hu's visit achieved a historic breakthrough. Their joint statement signaled a new chapter in their "cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit," and Asia is hailing the new orientation of bilateral ties and achievement set up by the leaders of the two countries.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority announced on Monday that it has received 7.5 million yuan from the country's Ministry of Finance to strengthen its efforts in fighting persistent drought in some regions. The fund would be used to support efforts by meteorological departments in Shanxi, Hebei, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan provinces, all major crop-producing regions, to conduct activities for seeding clouds and making artificial rain, according to a statement posted on the National Meteorological Administration website.Government data shows that a prolonged drought since last October had affected 108.24 million mu (7.22 million hectares) of wheat crops in those provinces, as well as Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, as of Sunday. The statement added that some of the affected regions experienced two rounds of snowfall last week, which were helpful in alleviating the drought. However, the major wheat-growing provinces of Shandong and Henan recorded no rainfall. The country's meteorological authority also predicted no significant rainfall or heavy snowfall for the dry regions over the next three days. SINGAPORE, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's first locally-built satellite has been officially launched from a space center in India after a four-year delay, Singapore media reported on Thursday. The 105 kg fridge-size X-Sat was one of three riding on Isro's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C16) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in India on Wednesday. It will be used to take photographs to measure soil erosion and environmental changes on earth, local daily Straits Times said. The launch at 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday was the 18th successful lift-off since the maiden flight of PSLV in 1994.The satellite was designed and built by Singapore's Nanyang Technological University and Singapore's defense research body DSO National Laboratories. Now in orbit, the satellite is establishing communication contact with the ground control in Nanyang Technological University, a process that is likely to take up to a week. The launch capped more than nine years of hard work by scientists and engineers. It also makes Singapore one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to have its own satellite in space. Previous satellite launched by Singapore involved construction efforts by foreign companies.

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China would continue expanding its radio and television networks coverage in the country's rural areas in the 2011-2015 period, according to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).In the five-year period, efforts would focus on ensuring access to radio and TV services in those villages with less than 20 households, the SARFT said in a statement. It noted that China's other villages which had more than 20 households were already covered by the radio and TV networks, thanks to government's continuous efforts in this regard.China's central and local governments poured over 15.7 billion yuan (2.38 billion U.S. dollars) into the upgrading of the radio and TV networks in the country's rural areas in 2006-2010.Official figures indicated that 96.31 percent and 97.23 percent of China's population had access to radio and TV services respectively in 2009. The ratio was 86.02 percent and 87.68 percent respectively in 1997.

LOS ANGELES, April 1 (Xinhua) -- A NASA Gulfstream-III aircraft equipped with a synthetic aperture radar is scheduled to depart Sunday, April 3 on a nine-day mission to image Hawaii volcanoes, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Friday. The aircraft will fly from the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, California to the Big Island of Hawaii to study the Kilauea volcano that recently erupted, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles. The mission will help scientists better understand processes occurring under Earth's surface, JPL said.Developed by JPL, the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar, or UAVSAR, uses a technique called interferometric synthetic aperture radar that sends pulses of microwave energy from the aircraft to the ground to detect and measure very subtle deformations in Earth's surface, such as those caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and glacier movements. As the Gulfstream-III flies at an altitude of about 12,500 meters, the radar, located in a pod under the aircraft's belly, will collect data over Kilauea, according to JPL.The UAVSAR's first data acquisitions over this volcanic region took place in January 2010, when the radar flew over the volcano daily for a week. The UAVSAR detected deflation of Kilauea's caldera over one day, part of a series of deflation-inflation events observed at Kilauea as magma is pumped into the volcano's east rift zone. This month's flights will repeat the 2010 flight paths to an accuracy of within 5 meters, or about 16.5 feet, assisted by a Platform Precision Autopilot designed by engineers at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, California, JPL said.By comparing these camera-like images, interferograms are formed that reveal changes in Earth's surface, said JPL.Between March 5 and 11, 2011, a spectacular fissure eruption occurred along the east rift zone. Satellite radar imagery captured the progression of this volcanic event."The April 2011 UAVSAR flights will capture the March 2011 fissure eruption surface displacements at high resolution and from multiple viewing directions, giving us an improved resolution of the magma injected into the east rift zone that caused the eruption," said JPL research scientist Paul Lundgren."Our goal is to be able to deploy the UAVSAR on short notice to better understand and aid in responding to hazards from Kilauea and other volcanoes in the Pacific region covered by this study," Lundgren added.
