CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A photographer in Carlsbad is helping to preserve the memory of the Greatest Generation, one portrait at a time.John Riedy works with The Greatest Generations Foundation. The group takes Veterans back to the battlefields on which they fought.During the trips, Riedy takes a portrait of each vet on their battlefield."It helps them realize that we’re not going to forget these guys," Riedy says. "When they’re gone, their legacies are going to live on."Over the last 12 years, Riedy has gone on nearly 50 trips with the Foundation and taken close to 300 portraits.For the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, he chose 75 of his favorite to hang in two galleries near Normandy and Omaha Beach."I think they were blown away to see their portraits up there," Riedy says of the reaction the Vets had when they got a first look at the galleries.Riedy says it's his personal way to honor the sacrifices they made."When you step onto Omaha beach, or you go to that cemetery at Omaha, and you see what they were up against when you see those cliffs, it's awe-inspiring," he says. "It’s like a switch flipped inside me. From them on I knew this was going to be my calling."Riedy and the Foundation have started to expand the program beyond World War II Veterans. Californians have voted to carve out specific gig workers from a state employment law about who is considered an employee and eligible for benefits.That means people who drive for Uber and Lyft will remain classified as independent contractors and will not be eligible for employee benefits.A California Supreme Court decision in 2018 created a strict test to decide whether a self-employed worker, like gig workers, should be considered employees.In response to the ruling, lawmakers amended Assembly Bill 5 in 2019 to add additional professions where services could be provided by independent contractors, and would not necessarily be employees. However, no changes were made for app-based companies like Lyft, Uber and DoorDash.The state law made app-based drivers employees, and would pay them for their time both while they are driving and they are waiting for a new ride, and offer employee benefits like paid sick leave and workers compensation for one-the-job injuries, the Los Angeles Times explains.Since the proposition has passed, drivers will remain categorized as independent contractors, although the proposition includes wording to require companies to provide an hourly wage for time spent driving equal to 120% of minimum wage. The language also gives drivers a stipend for purchasing health insurance coverage when their driving time averages at least 15 hours a week. However, only hours spent driving counts toward that total, not the time spent waiting between trips.Proposition 22 was launched and partially funded by Lyft and Uber. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Three people were treated for gunshot wounds and one person was taken into custody in Carlsbad following a shooting Saturday morning.Carlsbad Police responded to calls of shots fired at the Pacific View Apartment Homes complex in the 5100 block of Whitman Way just before 6 a.m.Officers arrived to find a man and woman with gunshot wounds in a courtyard area of the complex. Both were treated by Carlsbad Fire crews and taken to a nearby hospital.MAP: Crime happening in your neighborhoodPolice later located another man with a gunshot wound in the apartment complex. He too was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.Carlsbad detectives were on the scene Saturday investigating the shooting. They believe the three knew each other and the shooting was not a random act.Police said one person is in custody but did not say whether that person was one of the three who were shot. BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Cars and the coronavirus are two things that have not meshed well. It's creating what is now called a "COVID Car." "COVID cars are cars that have been sitting around for a long time and the batteries do not work," Bob Gugino, owner of Bison Automotive said. Gugino says he has seen a number of cars with similar issues with rotting brakes, dead batteries and severe neglect. "Every day people are working more and more from home so this is a consequence of that," Gugino said. These consequences of cars just sitting around are happening to vehicles of all ages. "All cars, whether new or old," Gugino said, "It affects the older ones a little bit more but every car, if it's not run, can have the battery die and the brakes rot out."The best way to make sure that does not happen? Drive your car around even if you don't plan on going anywhere. (KGTV) – The Legoland Hotel in Carlsbad is set to reopen before the theme park.Legoland California officials said the hotel, located on the same grounds as the Legoland theme park, will reopen to the public on Friday, July 17.With the reopening of the hotel, officials confirmed there will be numerous health and safety modifications in place such as social distancing practices and enhanced cleaning regimes.Legoland Hotel will operate in a reduced capacity, take cashless payments, and have a face coverings requirement for all guests three years of age and over. Hotel staff will also be required to don face coverings.Officials said those interested in staying at the hotel should book reservations online.The announcement of the hotel's reopening comes a week after officials said the Legoland theme park, which was shut down in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, would not reopen prior to Aug. 1.A reopening date for the theme park has not yet been determined. 992
