CHICAGO, Ill. — We're just days into the vaccination of front-line health care workers and many are asking, who’s next? States are beginning to roll out their plans, but timing is still very much in the air.For the last nine months, the check-out lines at grocery stores have not slowed.“We took one day off,” said Barbara Eastman, the owner of Happy Foods, a family-owned grocery store on Chicago’s northwest side. “We took off Easter Sunday. We closed the store and said everybody's got to take a break.”Essential workers like grocery store staff have worked tirelessly during the pandemic to keep the shelves stocked and Americans fed. In many cases, they’ve taken on great risks themselves.Grocery store worker John Wipperfurth came down with the coronavirus, despite taking every precaution.“I just took a little time off and came back a little more cautious afterwards,” he said. “But I was cautious before. That was the real scary part.”In fact, researchers at Harvard University recently found that supermarket workers who had direct contact with customers were about five times more likely to contract COVID-19 than their colleagues who didn’t interact with customers. It’s one reason experts like Lori Post says essential workers should be a priority following health care workers. Post is the director of the Buehler Center for Health Policy and she's an emergency medicine professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.“They can't work remotely. They must show up to work. They need to be vaccinated. They're high up on the priority list,” said Post.Right now, across the country, front-line healthcare workers and long-term care facilities are at the top of the list. But Post says groups like factory workers, correctional officers, inmates and disproportionately affected communities of color should be prioritized ahead of healthy adults. The exact timeline for when the general public could get vaccinated is difficult to pin down. Additional emergency approvals could accelerate a potential summer roll-out to healthy people. But even after the vaccine is widely available and a distribution plan is in place, it will likely take months more before restrictions are eased.“Best case scenario, next summer, middle of summer, end of summer, that we're going to be able to have enough vaccines,” said Post. And, for those who have worked hard to keep the economy going, like Barbara Eastman and her employees, they are still ready and waiting in line.“Most of us are looking forward to being vaccinated and being safe and being part of that group that's gonna make everybody safe.” 2622

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista high school student was arrested on suspicion of posting a threatening message on social media.Sweetwater Union High School District said they notified police Wednesday that a threat against Olympian High School was posted on social media. A student notified the administrators after school of the social media posting, according to Chula Vista Police. The threat was thought to be credible at the time, police said, and alluded to a student "becoming a school shooter."Chula Vista Police officers identified the poster as a 16-year-old 10th-grade student and took her into custody at her home Wednesday night. Police said the girl admitted to making the social media post "as a joke and thought it would be funny."Officers searched the students home but did not find any weapons. According to the district, officers do not believe any actual incident would have occurred. The student was arrested and taken to Juvenile Hall for making the threat. The Olympian High threat is the latest in a series of threats made against San Diego County schools in the weeks since the tragic high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14.RELATED STORIES: 1206

CINCINNATI -- Family members and friends said their final goodbyes to 16-year-old Kyle Plush at his funeral Monday. The teen died trapped inside his van at Seven Hills School last Tuesday, even after he pleaded with 911 operators to send help. Two Cincinnati police officers and a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy who searched near the school never found him. A Cincinnati City Council committee has a special meeting Tuesday afternoon to look into what happened. After Plush's death, the Cincinnati Police Department released a?computer-aided dispatch report,?Plush's calls and some dispatch traffic. It later released an internal review of the incident?after it was leaked to multiple news outlets. But the department has yet to explain exactly where its officers looked and what they did during their search for Plush. Nearly a week after the teen suffocated, numerous questions remain about what went wrong that day.The first 911 operatorStephane MaGee took the first 911 call from Plush. She couldn't communicate back and forth with him, because he said he could not hear her.MaGee indicated the caller was a female trapped in a van at the Seven Hills parking lot in "unknown trouble."Using latitude/longitude coordinates, she found Plush may be across the street from the school. She noted that location may be a thrift store parking lot in the dispatch report. Officers were dispatched to 5471 Red Bank Road, which is the parking lot across from the school where Plush was suffocating inside his Honda Odyssey. MaGee noted she used "Phase II" to find the location; "Phase II" is shorthand for a requirement, from the Federal Communications Commission, that wireless providers have to give 911 centers the latitude/longitude coordinates of cellphone calls. The latitude/longitude coordinates MaGee obtained were within feet of where Plush would be found dead later that night. Even though MaGee had almost the exact location of where Plush was found, a supervisor later wrote she should've used the school's name -- which would've sent officers to a less-exact location, at 5400 Red Bank. The officersRecords show Cincinnati Police Officers Edsel Osborn and Brian Brazile, riding double as Unit 2232, responded to the school to investigate Plush's first call. It's unclear if they ever came back on the radio to ask for clarification about the caller or vehicle. The officers noted they tried calling Plush back but didn't get an answer. Less than 11 minutes after arriving, they marked the assignment complete and were ready for a different assignment.Later that night, when Plush was found dead, another call went out for police to respond to Seven Hills School. Officers didn't yet know Plush was dead. Brazile and Osborn's unit, 2232, came on the radio to say they'd been there earlier in the day and found nothing."I think somebody's playing pranks. It was something about they were locked in a vehicle across from the school, we never found anything. But we'll respond and see what else we can find," one of them said in the radio transmission that night. That's what we know about the two Cincinnati police officers' actions. WCPO has requested numerous records, which have not yet been provided.Chief Eliot Isaac has not gone into detail about what the officers did at the school that afternoon. In a news conference Thursday, he never mentioned them by name. 3414

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — South Bay real estate broker Marlow Martinez proudly lives by a motto."No smile left behind," Martinez says. He says it's the backbone of his non-profit, the Marlow B. Martinez Foundation, created in honor of his dad.Martinez says his dad, Marlow Martinez Sr., was selfless man, always giving. And it's a legacy that Martinez has continued.LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: Military family has generations of serviceWhether it's organizing a food drive for Coast Guard families during last year's government shutdown or providing school supplies and backpacks for students in need, Martinez and his foundation have always been there."If I can take a burden and create some sort of good memory with it then and that's what I'm going to do," Martinez said. Especially in the darkest times. Last November, Horace Williams was killed in what police described as a road rage incident.LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: MANA de San Diego fuels lifelong journey for womenWilliams' fiance, Sasha, says the father of five little girls left a fully decorated home for the holidays, but no presents under the tree.Martinez saw the story, and reached out."We're going to get a Christmas for these girls. And a big Christmas," Martinez said. In a few days, he contacted every donor he could and organized a special party. Sasha, moved to tears, remembers his tender gesture.LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: City boasts diverse history"In some way, Horace is guiding the right person to make sure that our daughters had Christmas because I was not mentally capable of moving forward," Sasha says. And she's not the only one Martinez has helped in a time of need. Earlier this year, 4-year-old Ashley Moreno's family learned she was battling Stage 4 brain stem cancer. They knew they didn't have much time, and wanted desperately to throw her a dream pink princess birthday party. That's when they found Martinez."I put it out there and that's when I say my angel came into play with Marlow," Vivianna Martinez, Moreno's aunt, says. LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: Family restaurant thriving since 1950sMartinez's foundation booked a room, hired princesses, asked for donations, and invited the community. He created a cherished memory in Ashley's final days, and one that was especially meaningful for Martinez."I'm a father, who lost our first child," Martinez says. Three-month-old Madison passed from congenital heart disease in 2007. And ever since, Martinez's love for her has fueled him to lift others back into the light. "It's okay to care about complete strangers," Martinez says. The Marlow B. Martinez Foundation's next big event is the "Single Mothers' Thanksgiving." They're now accepting donations and turkey coupons. To donate, visit the foundation's website here. 2751
