They increased to 7 percent of cases in June, 10 percent in July and more than 11 percent of positive cases in August.The increase in younger patients has decreased the average age of COVID-19 patients in the U.S. from 46 years old in May to 38 years old in August.“Infection is not benign in younger adults, especially among those with underlying medical conditions, who are at risk for hospitalization, severe illness, and death,” the CDC states.Younger children, from infants to 9-year-olds, remained 2-4 percent of total positive COVID-19 cases from May to August.“Given the role of asymptomatic and presymptomatic transmission, strict adherence to community mitigation strategies and personal preventive behaviors by younger adults is needed to help reduce their risk for infection and subsequent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to persons at higher risk for severe illness,” the CDC report concluded.This week, the U.S. topped 200,000 deaths from COVID-19. NASCAR and the FBI said on Tuesday that investigators have completed an investigation and determined that driver Bubba Wallace was not the target of a hate crime.The racing circuit said that video from NASCAR given to the FBI concluded that a rope fashioned like a noose had been hanging from Wallace’s garage since as early as last fall. "Our focus on the outdoors is even more critical now than it has been," said Allegra Inganni, School Age Program Director for the Child Educational Center.Based out of La Ca?ada in Southern California, the private nonprofit has spent decades developing a childcare program centered around the outdoors. "It's everything! Children are happier, they're healthier. There are statistics that say the more time they spend outside, the fewer days they're out sick," said Ellen Veselack, director of the center's preschool program. Veselack says the program is research-based, and that learning outside is not only beneficial for kids physically but also cognitively."It's not just young children who do better outside, there's a whole host of research about the benefits of nature for us as adults," said Veselack.One of the center's initiatives is The Outdoor Classroom Project, designed to help schools and other childcare centers embrace outdoor learning. During the pandemic, schools have reached out looking for ideas on how to get started. "One of the things they talked about was what could they could help their teachers do outside. For example, if you're reading a chapter book to second graders, why not go outside to do that?" said Inganni. "I think school districts could do some amazing things if they just reach a little bit and pivot in their thinking," said Veselack. Outdoor learning advocates believe the move could help heal trauma from months of isolation and learning from a screen. It would also help schools navigate social distancing requirements while reducing the chance of virus spread. Millions of small, black cerith snails cover one area of Fort De Soto Beach, Florida, stunning wildlife lovers. The shellfish, known as cerith snails, cover nearly the entire length of the beach. Robert Neff snapped several pictures of the bizarre event. “I grew up in Florida and I’ve never seen anything like this. It was amazing to see,” he said.What makes this so odd is Cerith snails don’t typically wash up onto land. They’re usually along the bottom of the ocean in flat reefs or hiding in coral reefs where the temperature is warm. The snails are in an area off the south end of the parking lot at Fort DeSoto’s North beach, which borders the bird sanctuary. Neff said the low tide exposed the snails over the weekend, and many are still at the beach. His photographs, along with video taken by Mark Freels of See Through Adventures, have been widely shared across social media. One former research assistant from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center said it's possible the snails came to the shallow waters because they found food, which was washed up by recent hurricanes, on the beach. Freels said it was a very strange and magnificent sight.“My job is to take people on kayak adventures and you never know what you’ll find.
