ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 127 people have been confirmed dead in rain-triggered mudslides Sunday in a northwest China county, while rescuers are racing against the clock to search nearly 1,300 others who are still missing.Heavy downpours triggered landslides and mud-rock flows in Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province, early Sunday morning.The rescue headquarters in Zhouqu estimated that 1,294 people are missing as of 9 p.m. Sunday. Earlier the provincial civil affairs department put the figure at nearly 2,000.Another 117 were injured, including 29 in serious condition, as of 9:25 p.m.. In addition, 1,242 have been rescued from debris or brought to safety from places such as tops of buildings.About 45,000 people have been evacuated, according to a statement from the provincial civil affairs department.The water level in the county seat of Chengguan Township had declined by 40 cm, after floodwaters carrying mud and rocks submerged half the town in the small hours on Sunday, said Mao Shengwu, head of the prefecture.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao instructed the Gansu provincial government and other related departments to spare no efforts to save lives. ROME, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The recovering of poplar forests in Siyang County in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province is benefiting rural life and agricultural activities, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Wednesday.Thanks to a joint program launched more than 30 years ago by the Rome-based agency and Italian plant research labs, new poplar forests have extended from 7 percent to 47 percent and are now covering more than 100,000 hectares of the county's land area.Today the poplar forests play a crucial role in restoring marginal flood plains and stabilizing the river banks. Large swaths of planted poplar trees now protect fields once ravaged by floods, wind, sandstorms and soil erosion, giving boost to agricultural production and benefiting 1 million farmers living in the county.According to the FAO, the Siyang case is an outstanding example of countryside reinforcement triggered by the successful application of the international transfer of germplasm, scientific knowledge and technology."Poplars are very fast-growing and amazingly resilient," said Jim Carle, leader of the Forestry Management Team at FAO. "They can grow in many sorts of ways and can easily integrate with other land uses, making them ideal for supporting animal husbandry, agriculture, aquaculture, viticulture and horticulture," he added.Some of the services provided by these multi-purpose trees include furnishing material for shelter, shade and dwellings, protecting crops and supplying fodder for livestock, as well as offering viable sources of bio-energy.Since the launch of the program the FAO has engaged Siyang farmers and smallholders in new income generating activities. GUANLING, Guizhou, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a rain-triggered landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province had risen to 13 after rescuers recovered another two bodies Thursday night, rescue headquarters said.Some 2,000 people continued the rescue operation, but the chance of survival for the other 86 villagers was slim after being buried under mud for three days, rescuers said.More bodies are expected to be found as rescuers comb the ruins."It is almost impossible for any of the trapped to be alive now. We are doing our utmost to retrieve the bodies. HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.
