SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) — Lonnie Franklin, the convicted serial killer known as the "Grim Sleeper" who preyed on the women of South Los Angeles for decades, has died in a California prison. He was 67. Corrections officials said Franklin was found unresponsive in his cell at San Quentin State Prison on Saturday evening. An autopsy will determine the cause of death; however, a corrections spokeswoman said there were no signs of trauma. Franklin had been on death row since August 2016 for the deaths of nine women and a teenage girl. Franklin was linked at trial to 14 slayings, including four women he wasn't charged with killing. Researchers in Germany have recently published a study finding that a small percentage of people have developed an addiction to shopping. The October 2019 study released in Comprehensive Psychiatry explores the addictive response to shopping. The study found that 1 in 20 of adults developed an addiction to shopping. The researchers dubbed the addiction as "buying-shopping disorder" (BSD), which "is characterized by extreme preoccupations with and craving for buying/shopping and by irresistible and identity-seeking urges to possess consumer goods."While the study looked at shopping more broadly, the researchers believe that the ability to shop online is feeding the addiction. "As e-commerce provides an important shopping environment, traditional BSD may migrate into the online retail market," the study states. "The internet offers a vast variety of shopping information and simultaneous access to many online stores, thereby meeting expectations for immediate reward, emotional enhancement and identity gain."To read more on the study, click 1065

Research from Washington State University suggests cannabis could be used to relieve headaches, university researchers said in the Journal of Pain.According to the research, inhaled cannabis reduces self-reported headache severity by 47.3% and migraine severity by 49.6%. According to Washington State, the study was the first to use big data from headache and migraine patients using cannabis in real time. “We were motivated to do this study because a substantial number of people say they use cannabis for headache and migraine, but surprisingly few studies had addressed the topic,” said Carrie Cuttler, a Washington State University assistant professor of psychology, the lead author on the paper.Cuttler did caution that there could be a placebo effect, and that further research is needed.“I suspect there are some slight overestimates of effectiveness,” said Cuttler. “My hope is that this research will motivate researchers to take on the difficult work of conducting placebo-controlled trials. In the meantime, this at least gives medical cannabis patients and their doctors a little more information about what they might expect from using cannabis to manage these conditions.”The study also found no significant difference between the effectiveness of THC and CBD, two active ingredients in cannabis.One prior study indicated that cannabis was more effective than ibuprofen in reducing headaches, but that study used nabilone, a synthetic cannabinoid drug. 1480
