A frightening bank scam now allows thieves to get right into your checking account, and even savvy people are falling for it.All they need is:Your cellphone numberA bank account that is compatible with the Zelle money transfer system.You assuming that it's really your bank on the phoneIt just happened to one man in Ohio, who showed how thieves can now con their way into getting thousands of dollars from your checking account.Damon Lander runs a university biology lab. As a university employee, he's not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam — until this one."The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank," he said.With his caller ID showing his bank's number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank's fraud department."He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge," Lander said.It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank's app.The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank."My user ID had been removed," he said.A few minutes later, he got more alerts from the bank, and that's when he really started to worry."They changed my username, my password, my card PIN and set up a Zelle account."Scammers open Zelle accountLander had never used Zelle before, but it is a money transfer app similar to Venmo that is automatically offered to customers at almost a dozen big banks around the country, including Bank of America, Key Bank, Chase and Fifth Third.Suddenly, Lander watched helplessly as another text alerted him that his brand new Zelle account sent ,000 to a disposable cellphone number."They transferred funds to someone I've never met before," he said,Panicking, he called the bank's customer service number, where he learned the bank had not initiated any fraud call.In fact, to Fifth Third, it appeared that he had made all the changes to his account since he entered a verification code that essentially gave the keys to his account to a scammer.Why this scam is so worrisomeWhat's scary is that this scam doesn't require a thief to gain access to your ATM card or a blank check they found somewhere, as bank theft required in the past.All it takes is a text or call claiming to be from your bank's "fraud department" and they can get into your account. A day after a Virginia Beach city employee killed 12 people — including colleagues — in a shooting rampage in the municipal building where he worked, investigators are scrambling to nail down why it happened, officials said Saturday."It's still a sense of shock, disbelief. Why did this happen?" Bobby Dyer, mayor of the coastal Virginia city, told CNN, standing across the street from the multistory brick building where the massacre happened."I guess the big question is why. We want to know, too."Authorities said DeWayne Craddock, 40, a certified professional engineer in the city's public utilities department, opened fire on all three floors of Building 2 of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center at the end of Friday's workday.Craddock killed a dozen people and injured others, and sent terrified witnesses running out of the building or hiding under desks before dying at the end of a lengthy gunbattle there with four police officers, authorities said.Eleven of the 12 killed were city employees. The other was a contractor who was there to fill a permit, City Manager Dave Hansen said.Officials are now left not only answering questions about what happened but also dealing with the deaths of their colleagues. At 70 years old, he is among the last working cinema organists in the country. When asked what it’s like to sit down at the classic organ, Marian says he’s transported far away. “I’m like in a different world,” he said. For the last 20 years, Marian has played an electronic orchestral instrument for audiences between movie showings, a preamble to the latest Hollywood picture. “This past October, we did ‘Phantom of The Opera’ and we had 130 people here on Saturday and 110 people here on a Sunday,” explained Marian. The theater organ also known as a “unit orchestra” can mimic a host of sounds from flutes and oboes, to strings and percussion. “It's an orchestra in one,” said Marian. From the early days of the nickelodeon until the dawn of talkies, theater organs were a fixture in nearly all grand cinema palaces. They were originally designed to allow musicians like Marian to have all the instruments at their fingertips. “These theater organs basically were intended to do the silent movie, to complement the silent movie,” said Marian.
