The Camp Fire is just the latest fire tragedy in California. Residents are still rebuilding in Wine Country more than a year after the destructive wildfires there. In the one year since Kelly Bracewell's Santa Rosa home turned to ash, she's figured out how to be happier. She’s also learned how to live without some of her most cherished possessions. As she rebuilds her own home, she works to help others who lost everything."As an interior designer, it’s been a great distraction,” she says. She says she wants to help put the community back together.Another community member, artist Gregory Roberts, is also using his talents to help people heal. One artist is using the ashes to help the people who lost their homes heal.“I was standing in the studio during the fires, and ash was falling all around,” Roberts describes.Roberts was certain that he, too, would lose his home. Fortunately, his house and pottery studio survived, but the ash raining down over Wine Country gave him an idea.“I wanted to be able to give people back something to let them know that your memories are not actually lost; your memories are all still intact,” he says.Roberts started collecting ash from lost homes. Ashes from 140 homes appeared in a plastic bin on his front porch, some with handwritten notes, of people wanting him to create art from their lost homes."Something from their home, because this idea that everything is lost is a hard one to overcome," Roberts says.Roberts says the ash remnants of homes are different, so the patterns and colors are never the same."I really want each one to be sort of its own unique animal,” Roberts says. “In the same way that each person's home is unique." 1691

The Carr Fire raging in Northern California is so large and hot that it is actually creating its own localized weather system with variable strong winds, making it difficult for experts to predict which way the blaze will spread. At least seven people were still missing in Shasta County, California, as shifting winds, dry fuel and steep terrain helped the monstrous fire engulf almost 100,000 acres by Sunday night, authorities said. The fire has claimed six lives, including a firefighter and bulldozer operator working to extinguish the blaze.Sixteen people had been reported missing, but nine of those have been found safe, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, who spoke at a Sunday news conference. The fire, which started a week ago, has burned 98,724 acres and is just 20 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.Flames have destroyed at least 966 structures in the area, making it one of the top 10 most destructive wildfires in California history. In fact, 7 of the 12 most destructive fires have happened since 2015.PHOTOS: See damage done by Carr Fire in California"We are seeing more destructive, larger fires burning at rates that we have historically never seen," said Jonathan Cox, Cal Fire regional Battalion Chief. 1321

The FBI issued a warning on Wednesday alerting Americans to scammers using the coronavirus to solicit donations for fraudulent charities.Federal law enforcement officials say they have received reports that scammers are using the pandemic to steal money, personal information or both. The FBI says that often, the fraudsters will use the name of a real charity to conduct their scam. The FBI adds that criminals may spoof their caller ID number to make it appear the call originated from a legitimate charity.“Be careful,” the FBI said. The FBI offered the following advice to Americans:The best way to protect yourself is by doing your research. Here are some tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of a charity fraud:Do your homework when it comes to donations, whether you’re donating through charities, social media, or crowdfunding websites.Look for online reviews of charity organizations or use information from your state’s regulator of charities or from websites like the Better Business Bureau, give.org, charitynavigator.org, or charitywatch.org to check on the legitimacy of charitable organizations. Before donating, ask how much of the donation will go toward the program or cause you want to support. Every organization has administrative costs, and it’s important to understand those structures.Never pay by gift card or wire transfer. Credit cards are safer. After making a donation, be sure to review your financial accounts to ensure additional funds are not deducted or charged.Always do your research before clicking on links purporting to provide information on the virus, purchasing COVID-related products online, or providing your personal information in order to receive money or other benefits. 1724
