SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police Sergeant was arrested Friday after the department was tipped off to individuals reportedly soliciting sex from minors.Police say Joseph Ruvido, 49, was arrested in Carmel Valley and charged with one felony count of soliciting sex with a minor. A search warrant was served at the 21-year veteran's residence and he was taken into custody without incident.Ruvido was assigned to the SDPD Watch Commander's Office, approving reports and and bookings. Prior to that, Ruvido was a patrol sergeant with the department's Eastern division, according to SDPD Chief David Nisleit."I assure you Sgt. Ruvido will be held accountable both criminally and administratively," Nisleit said. "We take this very, very seriously."Watch the SDPD press conference below:"It is very embarrassing to have to talk about the arrest of one of our own," Nisleit added.The chief said Ruvido has been suspended without pay as the investigation continues.On Wednesday, police received a Crime Stoppers tip through the via the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit that multiple people may be soliciting sex from minors. Police identified one of the individuals as Ruvido and opened an investigation leading to his arrest.Once Ruvido was identified, investigators conducted 24/7 surveillance with investigators from the San Diego District Attorney's Office, according to SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell.SDPD declined to share any further details to protect the investigation, Nisleit said."We're going to be looking at everything," Nisleit said. "To the communities that we serve, every member of this department fully understands and strives to meet the expectations of this profession. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is on a mission to help minority mothers through their pregnancy.When Nikki Helms isn't hosting community dinner or volunteering her time to help Haitian immigrants navigate racism in America, she's walking families through the miracle of childbirth. Helms found her calling in 2014. "I had heard about these different women who had had these experiences where these women had asked for help and they weren't paid attention to," Helms said about how the hospital could be a dangerous place for minority moms.She was faced with a decision: "You could go to either nursing school or to midwifery school and I felt that midwifery school was a way that I could really make an appreciable difference right away."Helms said only four out of 75 San Diego County midwives are Black."I joke about it now that I am 25% of the black midwives in San Diego County," she said with a chuckle.The small segment is making a huge difference, providing culture-sensitive care during pregnancy.A friend told Helms to start a GoFundMe to raise money for a birth center. Helms said she started the page in January and at first it started out slow.Then friends contacted social media influencers and Helms said it was a huge snowball effect from there.She broke 0,000 this week and is elated by the support. "They hear my truth and they believe in my dream and they believe in me and that's just amazing," Helms said tearing up. "To have that now is just something special."She said she's filled with gratitude and hopes to make her dream a reality and build a better community."I want my LGBTQ brothers and sisters to know they have options. I want my immigrant families to know they have options, that they don't have to go to the hospital," she said.Helms said she is looking at starting her birth center in central San Diego county where the need is greatest. 1888

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An elderly Army veteran is warning others after he was brutally attacked while riding his mobility scooter in North Park.Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, 81-year-old Phil Severns was headed to a grocery store on the scooter when it happened."I just felt a sharp blow on the right side of my head. It almost knocked me out ... My glasses came off and were broken,  and my head hurt terribly," said Severns.Severns says he turned around and saw two concerned women who described his attacker. He looked and saw a man on the run a block away, described as a black man in his mid-20s with long hair, a lean build, and blue shirt and shorts.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodAt that moment, Severns says he kept thinking that he had to find out who did it. Severns decided to go after him, following him into a nearby CVS Pharmacy parking lot, where he found the man swinging a sock that appeared to be filled with rocks."Confronted him and asked him why he hit me," said Severns.The answer? A claim that Severns had hit him first, which Severns calls untrue. Before the man took off, there was more odd behavior.    "Just walking in circles and waving that sock," said Severns.It appears he wasn't done. Across the street at Walgreens, managers tell 10News they believe the same homeless man punched a clerk an hour later, the second such altercation with the man in the past year. It's a revelation that makes Severns more fearful."He's dangerous and acting crazy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego pastor is reflecting Wednesday on his special personal connection with Reverend Billy Graham, who passed away at his home in North Carolina from natural causes at the age of 99.Early in his career in 1949, Graham delivered a sermon at the Forest Home Christian Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains.  Bob Botsford's father ran the camp. Nearly two decades later during one of Graham's return visits to the camp - an excited, 5-year-old Bob interrupted his sermon."I remember yelling out 'Hi Billy!' And he yelled back, 'Hi Bobby,'" said Botsford.By then, Graham had become a family friend."I recall bigger-than-life charisma.  He was the most gentle soul and most humble man I've ever met in my life.  He was bold yet caring," said Botsford.Botsford says Graham inspired him to become a pastor at age 24."His invitation was for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that's what I longed for," said Botsford.Later, it was Botsford who flew to a revival in Kentucky to personally invite Graham to return to San Diego. His last revival was in San Diego almost 30 years before. "He said, 'Let's see if we can make that happen," said Botsford.It did.  In May 2003, a record-breaking crowd packed Qualcomm Stadium to hear him speak."It was electric and just filled with hope," said Botsford.After the event, there was a surprise in the mail.  Botsford received a bible from Graham in the mail, which included a message: "Bob Botsford. God Bless You and Keep You.  Amen.  Billy Graham.""Definitely one of my most treasured possessions," said Botsford.A decade and a half later, he must say goodbye to his friend."I'm sad for the world because we lost the greatest communicator of the gospel, but I'm happy for heaven because Billy is finally home," said Botsford.Botsford is also remembering a legacy.  At Qualcomm Stadium that day, his own son met Graham."I saw my son's eyes light up," said Botsford.The meeting inspired his son, who is now a youth pastor at Botsford's church, Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe."Third generation. Thrills my heart ... The message is going to outlive the messenger," said Botsford. 2219
