SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of Fire Prevention Week, Cal Fire is urging Californians to pre-plan for the worst case scenario.According to Cal Fire, homes today burn faster than ever, leaving just minutes to escape once the smoke alarm sounds.This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “look, listen and learn.” In support of the week, the agency is asking Californians to develop a fire plan and practice it.RELATED: Woman, mad at ex-boyfriend, accused of sparking massive Maryland apartment fireCal Fire offers tips on making the plan, such as checking to make sure fire alarms are working and making sure there are two ways out of every room like a door and window.Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of house fires, Cal Fire says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Laura Bolt’s plans for a summer abroad in Austria came to a screeching halt because of the coronavirus.“Of course I'm super disappointed that I wasn't able to go,” she said.Bolt is majoring in physics at the University of San Diego. She suddenly had an empty summer schedule.“I figured I needed to do something productive with myself, and so I started applying like crazy,” she said.Bolt landed an internship with MakeSAFE Tools, a San Diego manufacturer of devices that allow emergency stops on construction equipment in the home and in the field.Sales at the company, however, are down 60% to 70% since March.“If you're going to get a really solid intern, they've still got to do something for money, and we're not in a place that makes sense for paying interns, but we can provide really authentic experiences,” said Scott Swaaley, founder of MakeSAFE Tools.Bolt found a different way to get paid. She turned to the USD Career Center, which, through private donations, offers stipends to interns who demonstrate that they have a real learning opportunity at hand but will incur expenses.They can be granted between 0 and ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In recent weeks colorful bikes have filled the streets of San Diego. Dockless bike ridesharing companies were ready to go once the City Attorney's Office said they could operate. The city says LimeBike, Ofo, Mobike and Bird Scooter all have the proper licenses to operate here.LimeBike says in just two weeks they've logged 30,000 rides.The San Diego Bike Coalition supports the companies and believes the accessibility and affordability will help the city in its climate action plan. However, some residents have major concerns with the bikes, reporting that they're being left in the middle of sidewalks and on people's property. They've also witnessed scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to.Zack Bartlett, the general manager for LimeBike in San Diego, says they have an operations team patrolling the city 24/7 to run safety checks and reposition bikes improperly parked.
