From your smartphone to your TV, computer or tablet, many of us pretty much stare at screens most of the day. This can put a strain on our eyes, which is why some people are turning to blue light filtering glasses. "I get people in here every day saying that their eyes get really sore, they burn or get really dry by the end of the day," said ophthalmologist Lauran Zimski. "When people sit at a computer, they blink about half the amount of times they would normally blink."You can find the blue light glasses at eyeglass counters, online and at big box stores. They can cost anywhere from up to 0. "So, blue is a particular wavelength of light that has been shown to basically keep you awake during the day," said Zimski. Zimski says there’s research that supports the theory that the glasses help people sleep."There's a lot of good research that shows if you wear blue blocking glasses before bedtime when you're looking at a digital device, you will fall asleep easier," said Zimski. But, if you're sitting in an office all day, Zimski says "there’s no real evidence that it helps with eye strain during the day staring at a computer."So, what does that mean for those addicted to their devices?"I certainly do have patients that feel like they do help with eye strain at the computer so you can certainly try them, but they may or may not make a difference," said Zimski. 1396

Getting stuck in traffic is more than an inconvenience; it can be costly. According to a study released by Texas A&M University, the time and gas lost to sitting in traffic cost the United States 6 billion per year. The data released this week by Texas A&M was for the year 2017. From 1982 to 2017, the amount of time Americans have spent in traffic, as well as the amount of money that traffic costs have dramatically increased.Using 2017 dollars, the average American commuter wasted 0 in traffic. In 2017, that figure increased to ,010. In 1982, the average driver spent 20 hours a year in traffic. In 2017, commuters spent 54 hours in traffic, Texas A&M found. The study points out that in the amount of time Americans spend in traffic, 124 million couples could watch all eight seasons of "Game of Thrones." The researchers found that congestion in both major and minor metro areas experienced increases in traffic. For the complete study, click 982

Her name is not "Emily Doe." It is not "unconscious, intoxicated woman." Nor is it "victim of Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner."It's Chanel Miller. For the first time since her 2015 rape, she is telling her story not from behind a curtain of anonymity, but as herself -- attributed and for the record -- in the aptly titled, "Know My Name."In releasing the book, says publisher Penguin Random House, Miller is reclaiming her identity. Her struggles with shame and isolation provide a microcosm into the oppression that sexual assault victims -- even those with supposedly "perfect" cases -- experience, it says."Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life," 879

For nearly a decade, the US Mint has produced "America the Beautiful" quarters that pay homage to various sites in all US states and territories. But the newest quarter to be minted got quite a response on social media this week. The newest coin, which will enter circulation next month, will honor American Samoa by depicting an image from the National Park of American Samoa."The reverse (tails) design depicts a Samoan fruit bat mother hanging in a tree with her pup," US Mint said in a description of the coin. "The image evokes the remarkable care and energy that this species puts into their offspring. The design is intended to promote awareness to the species’ threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa is the only park in the United States that is home to the Samoan fruit bat."American Samoa is a US territory in the Pacific Ocean that is home to 55,000 residents. Unlike other territories such as Guam or Puerto Rico, the island's natives are not full-fledged US citizens. Instead, they are considered US nationals. 1094

Facing backlash, President Donald Trump informally announced outside of the White House on Thursday that his administration would continue funding its share for Special Olympics, mere hours after his Education Secretary Betsy DeVos defended the cuts for a third day in a row. "I've overridden my people, we're funding the Special Olympics," Trump said on Thursday. Trump's proposed budget still needs congressional approval. On Tuesday, DeVos met with lawmakers, and defended the Trump Administration for proposing nearly million in cuts to Special Olympics.DeVos was questioned on the subject by Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., who took issue with DeVos not knowing the number of participants in Special Olympics.“Let me just say that I think Special Olympics is an awesome organization, one that is well supported by the philanthropic sector as well,” DeVos said.According to 2017 figures from Special Olympics, the organization generated nearly 0 million in annual revenue. The majority of its budget comes from donations from individuals and corporations, which totals million a year.DeVos then defended the move as one to save the government money.“We had to make some difficult decisions," she said.A number of prominent celebrities decried DeVos' testimony later on Tuesday."Terrible. We should support athletes with disabilities, not rip away their opportunities," Chelsea Clinton tweeted. On Thursday, before a Senate committee, DeVos once again defended the budget cuts to Special Olympics. "I love Special Olympics myself, I have given a portion of my salary to Special Olympics. I hope all of this debate encourages lots of private contributions to Special Olympics," DeVos said "Let's not use disabled children in a twisted way for your political narrative. That is just disgusting and it's shameful, and I think we should move on from that."While DeVos was delivering testimony, Trump reached the conclusion that the government should provide funding for Special Olympics. "I just told my people, I want to fund the Special Olympics, and I just authorized a funding of the Special Olympics," he said. "I've been to the Special Olympics, I think it's incredible."According to Special Olympics, its mission is "to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community." 2628
