SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A study released Monday by the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative found that more than one-third of fifth-, seventh- and ninth-graders in public schools around the county are obese or overweight. The study found that 34% of students in the examined grades were overweight or obese during the 2017-2018 school year, using data from the California Department of Education. The county had a lower obesity rate than California's 39% and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's 2015-2016 national estimate of 40.7% for youth aged 2-19. The study found disparities in obesity among ethnic and economic groups, with 24% of white students classified as obese, compared to 49% for native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander youths and 43% of Hispanic or Latino children. In addition, 42% of students facing disadvantages like homelessness, being in the foster care system, meal scarcity and having parents without a high school diploma were found to be obese or overweight. Only 24% of students who were not deemed socioeconomically disadvantaged were found to be overweight or obese. ``Childhood obesity remains a pervasive challenge, and sadly current rates have not changed much from the previous report released for the 2014-2015 school year,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. ``This indicates a need for new and continued investment in our communities to address the root causes and environments that hinder children's health.'' According to the Childhood Obesity Initiative, students who face challenges like food scarcity are often more likely to face issues with obesity because they don't have easy access to healthier and more affordable food options. Within the county, higher levels of obesity in children roughly correlated with census tracts in which higher levels of the population had an income of 200% of the federal poverty level or less. In addition, school districts with a higher rate of students in the Federal Reduced Price Meals Program tended to have higher rates of overweight or obese students. ``As a nation, we struggle with the idea that a child can be both overweight and not have enough to eat,'' said San Diego Hunger Coalition Executive Director Anahid Brakke. ``But these are two sides of the same coin. Families struggling to make ends meet must often sacrifice buying healthy food for cheaper, nutrient-poor options that are filling but high in calories, fat and sugar.'' The Childhood Obesity Initiative and the YMCA of San Diego County plan to tackle the problem of childhood obesity by promoting the ``5-2-1-0 Every Day!'' campaign, which encourages children to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables, spend fewer than two hours on recreational screen time, be physically active for an hour or more and avoid sugary beverages like soda. All YMCA branches in the county will have free Sept. 14 open houses offering information to families on the campaign and how to combat childhood obesity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man held up a gas station in Mountain View and escaped on foot early today, police said.It happened just before 4 a.m. at a Chevron gas station on National Avenue near 35th Street, according to Officer Sarah Foster of the San Diego Police Department.A man walked into the gas station and pointed a gun at an employee, demanding money, Foster said.The employee complied and opened the cash register. The suspect took money from the register, grabbed two packs of cigarettes and took off on foot, Foster said. Police were unable to find him.Robbery detectives were investigating the incident. 618
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A judge took under submission today a motion by the federal government to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the cities of Imperial Beach and Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego, alleging that the International Boundary and Water Commission is violating the Clean Water Act by not doing more to prevent Tijuana sewage from flowing into San Diego area waters.The federal government maintains that the IBWC isn't legally responsible for the sewage flowing into U.S. waters from Mexico.But the plaintiffs claim that since the IBWC oversees a flood control channel that redirects the Tijuana River on its way to the Pacific Ocean, as well as water- capture basins in five canyons along the border, the agency is responsible for the sewage that gets through those systems.RELATED: Imperial Beach businesses hurt by sewage & runoff related closuresImperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, who has led the fight to against the IBWC since his city was hit with millions of gallons of raw sewage in February 2017, said it was heartening to hear U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller say he might go to the South Bay to see first-hand how the situation is being handled.Dedina said the plaintiffs got a fair hearing. "(It was) a very emotional morning for me," Dedina said outside court. "(I have) vivid memories of taking my kids to the emergency room. We have little kids here. Our kids are getting sick. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Backers of an initiative that would have raised San Diego's hotel tax to fund a long-awaited expansion to the city's bayfront convention center failed to collect enough valid signatures to earn a spot on the November ballot, the city clerk's office announced Wednesday.A random sampling of the campaign's more than 114,000 signatures by the county Registrar of Voters fell short of the threshold of verified signatures needed to place an issue on the ballot. A signature-by-signature count will start immediately, but such a count typically takes 30 days to complete, and the deadline to place a measure on the ballot is Friday."Colossal failure," initiative opponent City Councilman David Alvarez wrote on his Twitter page.Overall, 71,646 valid signatures are needed to place an initiative on the ballot. The signature-by-signature count could qualify the hotel tax increase for a future election if it isn't completed in time for the November ballot.The City Council could also decide to place the measure on the ballot during a Thursday special meeting, but that would raise the initiative's required success threshold to two-thirds voter approval.The proposed initiative would raise the city's 12.5 percent hotel tax to 13.75 to 15.75 percent depending on the location of each hotel.The 42-year tax increase was expected to generate .4 billion, including nearly .8 billion for the convention center.An estimated 7 million would have gone to homelessness services and housing funding over the tax increase's first five years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Morse High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.HHSA is working with the San Diego Unified School District to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing. The dates of exposure are from Feb. 28 to March 13 of this year.Morse High School, in the Skyline area of San Diego, is currently participating in social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 and onsite TB screening will not be available.According to the HHSA, students who were identified as being potentially exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider should contact the county's TB Control Program at 619-692-8621 to arrange to arrange an appointment for a free test.School teachers and staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District.The disease is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed to TB do not become infected."Testing is recommended for all those exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection usually has no symptoms," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a person is infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."Symptoms of infectious TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People infected with the disease, or who are immunocompromised, may not show symptoms. It can be cured with antibiotics.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years.In 2013, a total of 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018. Last year, 265 residents were diagnosed with TB.
