Kenneth Meredith has been married to his wife Betty for 70 years. JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — Latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows the suicide rate among young people between the ages of 10 and 17 increased 70 percent from 2006 to 2016.“In all my years of community mental health, I’ve never once been afraid to open my email in the morning,” Tim DeWeese said. “Today I’m afraid to open my email to see that someone else has committed suicide or that there’s been another homicide or there’s been another shooting."For more than 20 years, DeWeese has been with Johnson County Mental Health in Kansas, and has seen vast changes from the time he’s started.“It seems like we can’t go a week or a couple days without seeing something, so that’s the hardest part,” DeWeese said.CDC data also showed while black youth killed themselves less than white youth, the increase rate was higher, 77 percent within that decade.In Kansas alone, the suicide rate is higher than the national average, with Johnson County being number one in the state.“More than one Kansan dies everyday from suicide,” DeWeese said.DeWeese said there could be a number of contributing factors.“Lack of availability of mental health resources,” DeWeese said. “Our country, our state, has not necessarily put an emphasis on funding mental health treatment.”He said the stigma surrounding mental health could also be playing a role.“When we see these mass shootings occur or anything bad happen, immediately that person says that person has a mental illness,” DeWeese said.He said this does nothing but further stigmatize a mental illness. “And it really promotes people not to seek treatment,” DeWeese said.John County Mental Health recently started providing free gun locks at the center.“If you can create a barrier such as a gun lock, then — if actually in those two minutes it would take to unlock the gun or to find the key — then a person may rethink that decision,” DeWeese said.He said he encourages anyone who may know someone who is struggling not be afraid to ask them how they’re feeling, if they feel like harming themselves, and to listen.For more on suicide prevention, click here.— 2161

Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets in the Solar System, were stationed in nearly the same spot in the night sky on Monday, creating a bright spectacle.The positions of the two planets align once every 20 years, according to NASA. While conjunctions happen several times during the course of a typical lifetime, a conjunction of this magnitude is quite rare. The last time the two planets were this close to each other in the night sky was 400 years ago, but no one was able to see it as that conjunction occurred during the day.The last time a conjunction of his magnitude happened at night was 800 years ago.So what causes the conjunction?“You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth toward the center of the stadium,” said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21.”The timing of the conjunction adds to the spectacle. Monday also marks the winter solstice.Being four days before Christmas, some are dubbing the event as “The Christmas Star,” although the conjunction is of planets and not stars. Scientists have long speculated whether the Star of Bethlehem was the 7 BC conjunction of the two planets.“Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits,” said Throop. “The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.”While the two planets will have the appearance of being very close to each other, in reality, they will be hundreds of millions of miles apart.For the next few days, Saturn and Jupiter will remain very close to each other in the night sky.
