SAN FRANCISCO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Cisco Systems Inc., world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment, on Thursday brought up an early retirement offer to its employees in the United States and Canada, in a move to cut costs and restructure the company. The voluntary plan applies to employees who are at least 50 years old and have a combined age and years of service at Cisco for at least 60 as of July 8, the company said in a memo sent to employees."Cisco employs a variety of different methods to control costs and align investment dollars, and offering this voluntary early retirement program to those eligible employees in the U.S. and Canada is part of our ongoing commitment to responsible business management," the company said in a statement.Cisco gave no details on the costs it would save and the number of employees eligible for the plan.Earlier this month, Cisco CEO John Chambers warned that "tough decisions" would be made to preserve profitability as government budget pressure has been costing the company orders and slowing its sales growth. On April 12, Cisco announced to shut down its Flip Video camcorder business to restructure its business and support its key priorities.
SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its Bing search engine will become the default search and mapping application on Blackberry phones.Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer announced the partnership with Research in Motion (RIM), which makes Blackberry phones, at the Blackberry World Conference in Orlando, Florida, according to a Microsoft blog post.Ballmer said Microsoft would invest uniquely in the Blackberry platform in addition to its own Windows Phone platform."Bing will be deeply integrated at the BlackBerry OS (operating system) level," Ballmer said.Central to the collaboration, Blackberry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators, both in the United States and internationally, said Microsoft's Bing team in the blog post.Meanwhile, Bing is also shipping as the default search experience and map application for the newly released Blackberry Playbook, a RIM tablet computer which made market debut on April 19.On Tuesday's Blackberry conference, Ballmer called Google's Android ecosystem "chaos" and the Apple iOS "limited" before he hailed Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry. Microsoft and RIM are both competing with Apple, which makes the iPhone and iPad, and Google, which makes the Android operating system for smartphones and tablets in the booming mobile device market.
STOCKHOLM, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's railway network, already the world's longest, is developing at record high speed and is to be doubled soon, Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet reported on Wednesday."China's goal is to connect all important cities with railway lines," the report said.Collaborating with German Siemens, Japanese Kawasaki and Bombardier both in Canada and Sweden, China has built its own high-speed train CRH380A that can reach 486 kilometers per hour, cutting the journey between Beijing and Shanghai in half to about 4 hours.Construction of the high-speed railway network will also cover inland China, the report said. It aims to encourage more investment to move from coastal areas to inland China and ultimately raise the living standards in those regions.Within the next five years, a total of 3.5 trillion yuan (over 500 billion U.S. dollars) will be invested in high-speed track construction and train manufacturing, averaging at about 700 billion yuan (over 100 billion dollars) each year.Swedish companies such as Atlas Copco, SKF and Trelleborg have participated in China's railway and high-speed train development, according to the report.Hans Rosling, a development expert and also professor at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, was quoted as saying that the construction of the high-speed railway network will bring about "good economy, good education, good medical care, better and longer life, all good things."
