SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video shows burglars ransacking a Pacific Beach brewpub hit hard by the pandemic.Just past 6 p.m Thursday, while food and craft beer were being served up at the second-story Amplified Ale Works restaurant, a masked man was recorded while inside the first-floor office and shuttered music venue.A mangled door revealed the intruder's entry point."Looks like he used a crowbar on the back door," said owner Alex Pierson.Inside, he's seen rummaging through drawers, grabbing headphones and some other items before leaving. Pierson says the burglar returned hours later, and he wasn't alone."When they came back at 10:30 p.m., they ransacked everything," said Pierson. For some 40 minutes, three men are seen helping themselves to whatever they wanted, filling up box after box.In one clip, one of the thieves is seen sorting through paperwork. Several blank checks were found missing."It's that feeling of violation. It hurt. Also took several employees' bikes, several guitars, amps, eight cases of beer, merchandise and some other electronics," said Pierson. For Pierson, the burglary is beyond disheartening."We're doing everything we can to keep our employees employed ... a 'being kicked while you're down' feeling," said Pierson.Pierson says the impact of the pandemic has cut revenues for the eight-year-old brewpub in half. The loss from the theft is more than ,000."In the end, it's not going to break us, but we're at such a point of breaking, as it is," said Pierson.Pierson fears others have also felt the hurt. Recently, neighbors have reported similar break-ins at nearby businesses and homes.Pierson is now hoping his video will lead to the capture of these thieves."Nothing to say they won’t continue to do this again in our community," said Pierson.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Supporters of the newly passed California Prop 17, which restores the right to vote to felons on parole, believe the vote outcome may help improve public safety. For the first time in some three decades, Mancy Thompson, 56, was allowed to cast a vote in a presidential election, recently sending in his mail-in ballot from his La Mesa home."Elated. I felt like,'Yes!'" said Thompson. For decades, the answer had been "no."In 1987, high on cocaine and heroin, the active-duty Marine shot and killed a bystander during a bar fight in Oceanside. After pleading guilty and serving more than 23 years in prison, he was released on parole in 2011.He graduated from a reentry program at the local nonprofit Second Chance, and has held down jobs ever since, including positions at the nonprofit. He was on parole for seven years and not legally allowed to vote."If I am disenfranchised, I'm no longer connected. I don't have value to myself, family or community, because they don't have to listen to you," said Thompson. When he got off parole, his right to vote was restored. That right that will now be granted to some 50,000 state parolees, thanks to the passage of Prop 17.Thompson says it can help remove the stigma of the past."Now I have a right to be heard and participle in the democratic process. It's huge," said Thompson.Prop 17 supporters point to a recent parole commission report that found felons with voting rights were less likely to commit future crimes. Opponents say the right to vote shouldn't be granted until parolees have proven they're rehabilitated and allowing the parolees to vote denies justice to victims.Prop 17 passed with an unofficial 59% of the vote."If we want to help them reengage their community and be better versions of themselves ... part of that integration is being able to vote," said Thompson. 1856

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The family of the man killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 Monday morning says the California Highway Patrol got it wrong. According to them, their brother - Justin Callahan - was a driver, but not the driver who caused the crash. RELATED: Driver killed, 2 hurt in wrong-way crash on I-5On Monday CHP told 10News the following: Just before 2 a.m. Monday, a Volkswagon Jetta was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Inerstate 8 from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. As CHP officers responded, the Jetta entered the northbound Interstate 5 transition ramp to the westbound I-8 in the wrong direction and collided head-on with a Toyota Camry. An SUV then crashed into the back of the Camry, the CHP said. The driver of the Jetta was 35-year-old Justin Callahan, who was declared dead at the scene. Justin's family says he usually drives home from work at the time and would have been traveling in the opposite direction - from Chula Vista to his home in Ocean Beach. Based on that information, they tell 10News the CHP's report just doesn't add up. "It doesn't make any sense," his brother, Tommy Villafranca, said.  "Why would he get back on the freeway and get back the opposite direction?"And if Callahan did turn around and got back on the freeway, the timing doesn't add up,  his brother said.  He says his work caught on security video leaving at 1:38 a.m. and the crash happened less than 20 minutes later."It takes 21 minutes just to get from his work to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard," Villafranca said.   "He’s still got to turn around go back, and that would take even more time, so the timeline is not working at all."The family has created a GoFundMe to help them pay for arrangements necessary to get Callahan back to Wheatland, California and arrange a funeral. "Justin was an artist and an inspiration to the people around him," James O'Callahan wrote on the GoFundMe page. "At this point I am too broken up inside to write anything worth reading. Please share a story you have about him in the comments."In the comments, Stevie Workman wrote: "Justin, was my neighboor down stairs while I was in college. We had great times!! Dressing up in suits to go to fancy dinners, Super Bowl parties and talking to him about aviation. He was an amazing guy! Thoughts are with his family and friends."The GoFundMe has raised ,410 of the ,000 goal since Tuesday.     2596

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of Kiera Bergman says a recent development in her murder case has left them frustrated and fearful. The 19-year-old woman was missing for weeks before her body was discovered in the desert outside of Phoenix last year. Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, was charged in the murder; but this month, a judge lowered his bond from million to 0,000. RELATED: Friends and family celebrate the life of Kiera Bergman"I fear for my family, I fear for her roommate and any other girls out there that he could have the opportunity to start manipulating," said Kiersten Bragg, Bergman's mother. According to CBS 5 Phoenix, Clark's lawyers argued there's new evidence that might clear him in his trial. They also say that in original court paperwork, police detectives made comments that didn't add up. If Clark does bail out, he'll have to wear an ankle monitor. RELATED: Court documents: Kiera Bergman may have been pregnant at time of her death"I just yeah, I broke down and lost it, called my husband and let him know," said Bragg. She's frustrated Clark could potential go home and be somewhat comfortable, while her daughter will never get that chance again. Previous court documents reveal suspicious text messages and Wi-fi records as some of the evidence police used to arrest Clark. Documents also showed a history of domestic disputes.RELATED: Kiera Bergman case: Charges filed against ex-boyfriend in death of El Cajon womanClark's trial is scheduled for early next year but has already been postponed several times.10News reached out to Clark's attorneys but did not hear back. 1618
