(AP) — The next Mississippi state flag could have a magnolia instead of the Confederate battle emblem.It’s been nearly two months since legislators acted under pressure to retire the old flag with the rebel symbol that’s widely seen as racist.A flag commission voted Wednesday to recommend a design with the state flower. Kingsley, Iowa is home to 1,400 people. “Everybody knows everybody,” said resident Chet Davis.Davis owns the town’s single grocery store: Chet’s Foods. The store has been operating for decades, and Davis’ family has owned it for more than 40 years.Generations of the community have come through these doors, but now, Davis is worried this neighborhood staple may have an expiration date.“Whether we can make it the rest of the year, I don’t know,” said the father of four and grandfather of eight.Davis said his store’s sales took a big hit when a new neighbor moved in just a few blocks away. “This year, we had a Dollar General open up in Kingsley,” he said. After the discount store opened, Davis said his profits dropped by about 20-percent.“It’s disheartening,” said Davis. “You just do what you can, and that’s all you can do, so you just gotta kind of accept it. But you don’t want to; you want to fight it.”The loss in income is something he can’t afford for long. “It costs us ,000 a month just in electricity,” said Davis, as he pointed at the cold storage inside his store that’s necessary to keep frozen products, meats and produce fresh.But Davis has a bigger worry: the loss his entire town is about to see.“If we lose our store here in town, if you want a head of lettuce, you’ll have to drive 25, 30 miles. They always talk about a food desert, and that’s what we’ll have here if we end up having to close the store like we did the other one,” said Davis, referring to his second grocery store just a few miles away.What used to be a space packed with fresh produce is now empty, collecting dust. Davis and his family were forced to close just over one year after Dollar General opened right next door.“They came in and took about 30 percent of our business right off the top. He failed to make the ballot in Ohio because of "mismatched paperwork," according to state election officials on August 21. Specifically, information and the signature on West's nominating petition and statement of candidacy didn't match up to the documents used to circulate part-petitions.He missed being on the ballot in Wisconsin by less than a minute. The Wisconsin Elections Commission said the deadline is "no later" than 5 p.m., and they rejected West's attorney's claims that they had until 5:01 p.m. to file. Kanye did not gather enough signatures by the deadline to appear on the ballot in Missouri or his home state of Wyoming. KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Memorial Day travel may be more difficult in 2018 than it has been in more than a dozen years, according to AAA.The company released its 2018 Memorial Day travel forecast ahead of the holiday known as the informal kickoff to summer.AAA said 2018 will see a near-record number of travelers, with more than 41.5 million people expected to take a trip.That’s nearly 5 percent more than 2017, with an additional 2 million people traveling in planes, trains and cars.According to INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, travel delays could be up to three times longer, becoming especially bad on the Thursday and Friday before the holiday as travelers mix with work-week commuters.Most travelers will take a car to their destination — 36.6 million to be exact. Airlines will see 3.1 million people, and the 1.8 million remaining will take trains, buses and cruise ships.Despite higher gas prices, travelers are still hitting the road. They will pay the most expensive Memorial Day weekend gas prices in four years.One contributing factor to peoples’ willingness to travel despite the price hike could be that airline and rental car costs are expected to dip this Memorial Day weekend, making up for the increased cost.Airfare is down 7 percent in price, and the average daily cost of a rental car is the lowest it’s been in four years.AAA released a list of the top 10 Memorial Day travel destinations, with Orlando at #1. 1463

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A squirrel found in Morrison, Colorado, on July 11 tested positive for the bubonic plague.This is the first known case of the plague in the county this year, according to Jefferson County Public Health. It's not an uncommon sickness to see in rodents year to year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scientists believe the plague bacteria circulates in low rates of rodent populations regularly.The department did not release any other information on the animal.Both humans and household animals can become infected with the plague without proper precautions.Humans may become sick with the plague through bites from infected fleas, a cough from an infected animal, or direct contact — such as a bite — with the blood or tissue of an infected animal, according to the health department.Dogs and cats are also susceptible to the plague, though cats are more vulnerable to it. While dogs may pick up and carry plague-infected rodent fleas, cats can contract the plague from flea bites and can die without treatment and antibiotics. If you believe your pet is sick, call your veterinarian. Jefferson County Public Health also recommends talking to your vet about flea prevention if you live near wild animals, including prairie dog colonies.Symptoms of the plague include:· Sudden onset of high fever· Chills· Headache· Nausea· Extreme pain and swelling of lymph nodes, within two to seven days after exposureIt can be treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early.
