A summer night at Cedar Point in northern Ohio in late June of 2015 was nearly over after one more ride for Theron Dannemiller, when the safety gates on the Raptor roller coaster got in his way."They started to shut on me," Dannemiller said. "I'm hurt and I look down and I can see the gash...you can see inside my leg."Dannemiller said something sharp on the gate caused a gruesome cut on the front of his shin that didn't heal for a year and now leaves a nasty scar."Most people are not aware that there is no tracking system for these injuries," Tracy Mehan, the Nationwide Children's Hospital Manager of Translational Research said. "We are able to get a feel for what's happening, but it's just an estimate."The comprehensive data she pulled together is little more than a best guess because no one tracks many of the bumps, bruises and even broken bones from amusement park rides. No one, at least, who is willing to share that information."There are people keeping track of the incidents and the injuries, but it's the amusement parks themselves,"  Jarrett Northup, a law partner at Jeffries, Kube, Forrest and Monteleone Co., said.Northup said in personal injury lawsuits, privately owned amusement parks hold all the cards because the injury data belongs to parks themselves. "It's probably data that the corporation feels can be used against them," Northup said.Cedar Point, for instance, has its own private police department and its own paramedics, so information about who they treat and what for isn't public."Having that information readily available to the public would make it easier to hold the amusement parks accountable," Northup said. There is some park injury information that becomes public when it's reported to the state. The Ohio Department of Agriculture requires stationary amusement parks, like Cedar Point or Kings Island near Cincinnati, to disclose an incident within 24 hours if it led to an overnight hospital stay. But even then, accountability is a challenge.Reports from the last five years documented many issues that had nothing to do with how the rides operate, like dizziness, elevated heart levels and heart attacks. It also shows that even parks struggle to figure out if an incident needs to be reported because they lose track of the injured person after they go to the hospital."If they go to the hospital and don't report that it was an injury due to an amusement ride, we don't see any of that," Mehan said. "So this is just the tip of the iceberg."In 2013, there's a record of when the state saw the iceberg below the water. In that report, the Department of Agriculture fined Kings Island 0 for not reporting an injury in 2013 until months later. Kings Island told the state they didn't know the injury created a long hospital stay, requiring a report, until the person who got hurt contacted them months after it happened. The park eventually paid the fine, costing them the price of 12 daily admission tickets.Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland looked for what the state isn't capturing. Those private police departments and paramedics can't transport injured riders to the hospital, so they have to call local ambulances. Just in 2017, the Sandusky EMS call log shows five trips in six months to Cedar Point for injuries like a broken leg while getting on a ride, a dislocated knee from a waterslide and one child who fell off an inner tube and hit his head.None of those incidents created any report to the state.Cedar Point and Kings Island, both owned by parent company Cedar Fair, issued the following statement: 3641

A terrifying email scam using stolen passwords and sextortion is trying to scare many out of their money. There are variations of the blackmail threat, but in most cases, a password that someone once used or is still using appears in the subject line of the email. The hackers claim to have "evidence of your secret" after installing malware on adult video sites. The email explains web cameras were hacked and recordings were made of the person watching the pornography. The hackers then demand anywhere from ,000 to ,600 in bitcoin or the video will be released to all contacts, including family members and co-workers."It's a non-negotiable offer, thus please do not ruin my personal time and yours," one hacker wrote. "The clock is ticking.""It's really electronic blackmail," cybersecurity expert Tim Dimoff said. "This is a very well-structured blackmail. Boy, it looks believable."However, it's all a nasty scam. There are no videos and the hackers may have one of your passwords, but they don't have all of your information."If you look in the body of the email, they're not using your name. They're not saying what specific website you might be going to and they don't have a screenshot of you," said Christy Page, the president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Akron.Page said more than 130 complaints have reported nationwide through BBB's scam tracker. It's not clear how many of those people gave up the ransom, but it's estimated 0,000 has been paid this year by people frightened by the threat."The fear of embarrassment can be very powerful to get you to part with your money," Page said.Dimoff and Page said the hackers likely used the dark web to buy passwords that were stolen during data breaches and the hackers can be very difficult to track.Page said anyone who receives the email should not pay any money or respond to it.  However, passwords should be changed immediately. In addition, Page said people should consider using a password manager and a web camera cover for extra peace of mind. Some BBB offices offer the covers for free.Consumers who want to find out if their passwords have been compromised can go to the security website Have I been Pwned which collects information on data breaches. 2272

A species of turtle that was believed to have been extinct 20 years ago is making a comeback. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said in a press release this month that the Burmese roofed turtles now appear to be in little danger of biological extinction.Conservationists with WCS and Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) rediscovered the creatures, which have natural smirks on their faces, in the wild in the early 2000s.Now, conservationists monitor sandbanks in Myanmar that female turtles use as nesting sites. Eggs are collected, incubated under natural conditions and then the offspring are “head-started” for eventual repatriation into the Chindwin River, WCS says.Conservationists say the captive population of these turtles is approaching 100,000.WCS says complementary conservation efforts are focused on the remaining wild population, which consists of five to six adult females and perhaps as few as two males.Steven G. Platt with WCS told The New York Times that if conservationists didn’t intervene, the turtle species would be gone for good. But while the species is headed in a good direction, Platt cautioned that unsustainable fishing practices remain a problem for the turtles’ recovery in nature. 1222

A pilot and his assistant have been arrested in Northern California and are accused of kidnapping and attempting to deport a 21-year-old Chinese flight student.Jonathan McConkey, reportedly the general manager of the IASCO flight school, and his assistant, Kelsi Hoser, are accused of planning and carrying out the kidnapping.Incidentally, the flight school posted a video on Facebook last year talking about how much it enjoyed training Chinese flight students. 475

A New York appeals court has cleared the way for a publisher to distribute a tell-all book by President Donald Trump's niece over the objections of the president's brother. The New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division issued the written decision late Wednesday. The appeals court lifted a restraint that a judge put on Simon & Schuster that sought to block its distribution. But it left in place restraints against Mary Trump. She's the author of “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.” The publisher, Simon & Schuster, and a lawyer for Mary Trump praised the ruling. An email seeking comment was sent to a lawyer for Robert Trump, who sued Mary Trump. 718
