WASHINGTON — As COVID-19 cases skyrocketed before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the coordinator of the White House coronavirus response warned Americans to “be vigilant” and to limit celebrations to “your immediate household.” For many Americans that guidance has been difficult to abide, including for Dr. Deborah Birx herself. The day after Thanksgiving, Birx traveled to one of her vacation properties on Fenwick Island in Delaware. She was accompanied by three generations of her family from two households. Kathleen Flynn, whose brother is married to Birx's daughter, told the Associated Press she came forward about the travel out of concern for her own parents, and acknowledged there was family friction over the incident. Birx confirmed to the Associated Press she traveled to the Delaware property, but declined to be interviewed for the report. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has asked Americans not to travel over the holidays and discourages indoor activity involving members of different households.Birx joins a growing list of high-profile leaders on the federal and state level who have been criticized for appearing to disregard their own rules and warnings for slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Most notably, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is facing a recall effort in his state after he was seen inside a posh restaurant after telling people to avoid socializing. 1423

WASHINGTON (AP) — Military suicides have increased by as much as 20% this year compared to the same period in 2019, and some incidents of violent behavior have spiked. Service members are struggling with isolation and other effects of COVID-19, in addition to the pressures of deploying to war zones, responding to national disasters and addressing civil unrest. The data is incomplete and causes of suicide are complex, but Army and Air Force officials say the pandemic is adding stress to an already strained force. The numbers vary by service. The Army’s 30% spike pushes the total up because it’s the largest service. 629

WASHINGTON (AP) — Acting in lawsuits involving absentee ballot deadlines in three battleground states, the Supreme Court has allowed extensions for ballots in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to remain in place. But it has refused a plea for a relaxed deadline in Wisconsin. In each case, Democrats backed the extensions, and Republicans opposed them. All three states have Democratic governors and legislatures controlled by the GOP.Last week, the Supreme Court tied 4-4 by upholding the ruling from Pennsylvania's Supreme Court that would allow election officials to receive and count ballots until Nov. 6, even if they don't have a clear postmark. On Wednesday, the justices denied the motion to expedite a review of the state's Republican Party's appeal to exclude mail-in absentee ballots after the elections were over."There is simply not enough time at this late date to decide the question before the election," Justice Samuel Alito said in a statement alongside Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch. "That does not mean, however, that the state court decision must escape our review."Alito added that state officials informed county election boards to segregate ballots received between 8 p.m. on Election Day and 5 p.m. on Nov. 6.At first blush, the different outcomes at the Supreme Court seem odd because the high court typically takes up issues to harmonize the rules across the country. On Wednesday, the justices said absentee ballots in North Carolina could be received and counted up to nine days after Election Day.On Monday, the justices stated that ballots in Wisconsin must be received by Election Day in order to be counted, the Associated Press reported. But elections are largely governed by states, and the rules differ from one state to the next.Justice Amy Coney Barrett did not participate in consideration of either motion, the justices said. 1877

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pointing fingers over the failure to deliver coronavirus aid.Pelosi is blaming Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for failing to produce answers to her demands for Democratic priorities as part of an almost trillion aid package.A Thursday morning letter to Mnuchin was the latest volley in a blame game over the failed talks, which have cratered before the election. This morning, as our nation approaches nine million COVID-19 cases and a quarter of a million lives lost, I sent a letter to @stevenmnuchin1 seeking the Trump Admin’s responses on several outstanding items in COVID relief negotiations. VISTA (CNS) - A Vista vodka distillery that shifted its operations to producing hand sanitizer during the coronavirus pandemic announced Tuesday that it will donate a portion of the proceeds to fund COVID-19 research.Misadventure & Co. said 15% of profits generated by its hand sanitizer sales will go to "scientific research institutions, including The National Institutes of Health Foundation, John Hopkins Medical Foundation and University of California San Diego Health Foundation in the name of COVID-19 research and response."In March, the company pivoted operations to manufacturing hand sanitizer after pandemic restrictions prevented patrons from visiting its distillery or tasting room."We are so thankful that we were able to pivot our business and save jobs when the coronavirus first struck. We want to give back by donating to institutions that will help find a vaccine," said co-founder Sam Chereskin."Now just like our sustainable vodka, consumers can feel good about purchasing their hand sanitizer through our website because they know they will support efforts to end this pandemic," he said. ``We call on more companies to join this movement and help donate a portion of their proceeds in a similar manner." 1239
