NANNING, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Sunday that China's financial institutions have generally increased their strength, profitability and risk-resisting ability, and the financial system as a whole is sound and safe in face of the international financial crisis.     Wen made the remarks during an inspection tour to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China. As a result, the country's economy has maintained its momentum of smooth and rapid development, Wen said.     Generally speaking, China's economic foundations have not changed and the economy is developing towards the preset macro control targets, said the Premier.     "We have full confidence in China's economic development and financial stability," Wen said, stressing that the most important thing is to do our own business well, maintain the stability of the economy and the financial and capital markets.     "It is the biggest contribution to the world when a big country with a population of 1.3 billion is able to maintain a lasting, smooth and fast economic development," he said.     On Saturday and Sunday, Wen inspected villages and factories in the cities of Beihai, Qinzhou and Fangchenggang, and talked with local people of different nationalities and from all walks of life.     He said that the development of Beibu Gulf should focus on technological innovation and environmental protection to build into an important zone for international and regional economic cooperation.     In Gaosha Village of Qinzhou, Wen inspected rice paddy and visited farmers' homes. BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The Beijing municipal government said on Sunday that the city's state-owned enterprises (SOEs), institutions and social groups should adjust their working hours from July 20 to Sept. 20 to avoid traffic jams. A notice issued by the municipal government said that, except for schools and institutions that provide essential services, SOEs should operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Beijing municipal government said on Sunday that the city's state-owned enterprises (SOEs), institutions and social groups should adjust their working hours from July 20 to Sept. 20 to avoid traffic jams    Large shopping centers should open at 10 a.m. and stay open later in the evening.     Other institutions should operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.     Government departments won't alter their hours, the notice said.     The notice also encouraged institutions to handle business online if possible and arrange flex-time arrangements where feasible.

XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Venezuela on Wednesday inked a series of agreements on wide-ranging fields, a sign of bilateral efforts to advance their strategic partnership to a new high.     The agreements came out of the summit talks in the Great Hall of the People as Beijing rolled out the red carpet for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.     The 12 new cooperative deals covered trade, oil, finance, education, justice, telecommunications, infrastructure, sports and cultural relics. Wu said China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, would like to maintain its friendly exchanges and cooperation with the Venezuelan legislature, boosting the overall bilateral ties.     Chavez will conclude his three-day state visit to China on Thursday.
