Students who survived the school shooting in Florida are using their voices to try and spur change. It’s young voices, that haven’t heard before who are speaking up.Seven seniors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — Jack Haimowitz, Ronnie Froetschel, Vincent Frettoloso, Matthew Horowitz, Cole Sumner, Cain DeLima and Joey Mondelli — say they hope the tragedy spurs change.“The day that changed everything,” Mondelli said, when asked how he wants people to remember the day of the shooting.“I don’t want them to look at it as a statistic,” Somner said. “I want people to see this as the last one. I want people to look back at that day because that was the end,” Haimowitz said. These are seven faces of survival, family, and ultimately, they hope, change. “If there’s anyone that can change the outcome of situations, it’s going to be Parkland and we will change it,” Frettoloso said. “It’s tough when you’re by yourself so when you’re all together, it kind of get your mind off it,” DeLima said. Tonight, they’re freshly blonde, for their friend and victim, Joaquin Oliver. “His favorite artist was Frank Ocean, when he dropped his album 'Blonde,' it was about the time Joaquin dyed his hair this color,” Haimowitz said. “He was everyone’s friend.”“That kid didn’t know a single thing about lacrosse and he was out there screaming like he’s been playing it for the last 18 years,” Haimowitz said. On Wednesday, they grew up fast. “It’s a race for maturity. No one really told us there was going to be a starting line or a starting gun, they just expected us to go,” Haimowitz said. First, they will grieve. They have 17 funerals to attend. When the time’s right, perpetuate change. “An assault rifle, that’s a weapon made with intent to murder and harm people. So once we feel ready, we’re going to make our voice heard that our platform is built upon making sure weapons like these can’t get in the hands of people again,” Haimowitz said.  2042

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is back in the hospital on Wednesday, according to a court statement. The statement said that Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to be released from the hospital later this week. The statement said that Ginsburg underwent a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to revise a bile duct stent that was originally placed at Sloan Kettering in August 2019.Stent revisions are common occurrences and the procedure, performed using endoscopy and medical imaging guidance, was done to minimize the risk of future infection, her doctors said, according to a statement. In May, Ginsburg was hospitalized for treatment for a benign gallbladder condition.Ginsburg has also beaten cancer four times, most recently she declared herself “cancer free” in January following treatment for pancreatic cancer. 918

TAMPA, Fla. -- As parents across the country grow more concerned every morning when they send their kids to school, more and more are turning to bulletproof backpacks.“After Sandy Hook, people couldn’t wrap their minds around a bulletproof backpack but now they think it’s something that they need," said Yasir Sheikh, the president of Guard Dog Security. The Sandy Hook shooting inspired Sheikh to create a backpack out of bulletproof materials. It doesn’t seem like much. The backpack has just a thin layer of kevlar, but it is certified to withstand handgun rounds.“Ideally, we think with the way things are going this should become mandatory, common for all students," said Skeikh. "It’s a sad reality, it’s become a new normal."Others feel the same. Just three days after the deadly school shooting in South Florida his company saw a 150 percent increase in the number of bags they shipped. But do they actually work?Ryan Hart is a certified firearm instructor for defense training company Ground Ready International Training, or G.R.I.T Ready. He also teaches active shooter survival courses.Hart put a barrel with sand behind the backpack to simulate a body and took aim with his Glock 19.“The rounds definitely penetrated the front of the bag here," said Hart inspecting the shot-up bag, "But if we flip it over there’s no penetration past the armor itself."Next up: the AR-15.In the last decade, this style of gun has been used in six of the 10 deadliest mass shootings throughout the country, including the Parkland school shooting.“It went right through the soft armor," Hart said after spraying the backpack with bullets from the AR-15.It's what Hart expected, as the Guard Dog Security backpack is not certified to withstand assault-style weapons. To stop bullets from a similar weapon, the backpack would need to be equipped with steel plates like those installed in military vests. However, that would make the backpack fairly heavy to carry.“I would recommend (the backpack), yes," Hart said. "While it did not stop a direct shot from an assault rifle it can still stop bullet fragments, ricochets, glass flying through the air.”Then we posed this question to Skeikh: "What do you think it says about our society that we are resorting to items like this?"The backpacks cost between 0-200. Fifty percent of the proceeds from sales of the backpacks right now will go to the victim's families of the Parkland shooting.Guard Dog Security is also looking into possibly making backpack, that would have the ability to stop assault-style weapons. 2664

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick blamed Friday's massacre at a high school near Houston in part on "too many entrances and too many exits" on the campus, prompting some to mock his perspective as "door control.""From what we know, this student walked in ... with a long coat and a shotgun under his coat," said Patrick, a Republican who has an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association. "It's 90 degrees. Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe he would have been stopped." 508

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. – A two-day search of the home of Kelsey Berreth’s fiancé in Florissant, Colorado turned up no sign of the missing woman, Chief of Police Miles J. De Young said Sunday.About 75 people from multiple jurisdictions searched the 35-acre home of Patrick Frazee Saturday, hoping to find any new clues that would provide answers into the Woodland Park, Colorado woman’s mysterious disappearance. Frazee, who has not been ruled out as a suspect in the case, continues to cooperate with police during the investigation, according to his lawyer.“We still have not found Kelsey,” De Young said in the latest press release from law enforcement. The search, which at one point involved the help of a backhoe, was completed Saturday and the property was turned over to Frazee.Investigators are continuing to conduct interviews as De Young stressed the case “remains our number one priority.”Details about what investigators were searching for at the home have not been released. 1022
