In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a lot of animals in the Bahamas are left without owners to care for them and without homes to shelter in. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) sent a crew to the Bahamas, trying to find and save those animals that survived the Category 5 hurricane. Alex Johnson with IFAW spent days in the throes of Dorian’s aftermath.“It was apocalyptic, catastrophic, whatever you want to call it,” he describes. “It was, it was just, it was just devastating.”Johnson is part of a rescue team sent to Abaco to help stranded animals. “We have set up in Nassau a dispatch, a dispatch center, where people it's almost like a crisis hotline where we have someone getting calls from desperate pet owners looking for pets that were left behind,” he says. Johnson describes the visit as “eerie” as he walked through areas devastated by the storm.“You would just walk by these areas and just kind of get a whiff of like some foul stench,” Johnson describes.For the animals the group would find, they would classify them as being an urgent situation or not. Johnson describes a dog he encountered that needed urgent medical attention. However, soon after finding him, the dog passed away. “And that's just like the sad reality of how the situation is going,” he says.Johnson says he and his crew are trying to offer refuge. “People like me and my other teammates are there to kind of give these animals a fighting chance, because they're often forgotten and these type of situations,” Johnson says.The IFAW team says their top priority is getting animals out of the hardest-hit areas and reuniting the ones they can with their owners. John Pregulman is on a mission to ensure that those who survived the Holocaust are not forgotten. Pregulman is occupied with documenting the estimated 200,000 still-living Holocaust survivors. “Their biggest fear is that they’ll be forgotten,” Pregulman said as he was surrounded by hundreds of portraits he took of survivors taped and pinned onto four walls.Among those Pregulman has documented was Mildred Ferro, 93, who said she was age 11 when she moved to the United States. Pregulman recently visited a senior living community to capture Ferro’s picture and story.Pregulman’s became motivated when he learned that many survivors worry that their story will be forgotten in history. What started as a one-time gig, taking photos at an event outside of Chicago five years ago, has turned into almost an obsession.“I took their pictures, they shared their stores, and I just became completely enthralled with these amazing people who I expected to be sad and unable to get past what had happened, and yet they were the happiest most positive and accomplished people I had met in a very long time,” he said.In hearing their stories, Pregulman and his wife soon learned a disturbing statistic: roughly one-in-three Holocaust survivors live in poverty.“Dignity had to be the centerpiece of everything,” his wife Amy Israel Pregulman said. “They deserve that.”They’ve started a non-profit called 1407

In the Tennessee community hardest hit by devastating tornadoes, the few houses still standing have become beacons of hope. One of those belongs to Amy and Darrell Jennings. The Jennings have welcomed friends and neighbors into their house in Putnam County and are trying to help survivors recover some of their belongings from the rubble. A tornado tore a 2-mile-long path through the county early Tuesday, killing 18 people, including five children under 13.
