SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing.The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. "Now people in America are starting to embrace it."The homes are pricey. Models in Lennar's Sterling Heights development run between .7 and million. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. SAN DIEGO - A hot air balloon with 14 passengers and a pilot on board made an unplanned landing in Rancho Pe?asquitos Sunday night.The balloon set down on a hillside at Pe?asquitos Drive and Del Diablo Way west of Interstate 15 about 7:15 p.m.The community jumped in to help, keeping the basket stable and helping the passengers exit safely, according to the San Diego Police Department.Witnesses helped the pilot bring the basket down to the street where it could be picked up by the owner, police said. The owner's name was not released.No one was injured.The NTSB will investigate the cause of the unplanned landing.  643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said.The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. They are part of a 14-week intensive program, where 92% of graduates get jobs in the field.10News met Dorothea Sontag, a disabled Air Force Veteran, who was once a volunteer at Father Joe’s. When times got tough, she sought help from them."After my husband died, I hit hard times,” Sontag said. She lived out of her van until Father Joe’s took her in. Now at 62 years old, the former nurse's aid has a new aspiration. "I have a brother who's chef in Connecticut, so maybe it's in our blood,” Sontag laughed. Her instructor Theresa Fields said she is proud of Sontag for always pursuing perfection in the dishes she prepares. "They get a sense of pride that you can see on their face. They just glow,” Fields said. "I see too many people who are disabled and they let their disability rule them. I rule my disability. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Family members have identified three of the four teens involved in a deadly accident in Mt Hope.Three teens died at the scene, a fourth is in ICU at the hospital.Dwayne Heard is Dashaun Heard’s father, one of the teens that did not survive the crash. Dashaun was just 17-years-old. Heard says his family is still in disbelief about what happened, saying his son was a good kid that was outgoing and enjoyed being with his friends.Rose Monta?o is the mom of two of the teens in the car, 17-year-old Daniel and 15-year-old Julian Monta?o. Daniel did not survive the crash. Julian is in ICU and doctors had to amputate one of his legs.Monta?o says her son Daniel had a loving heart, was positive and enthusiastic about life.Both Heard and Monta?o say they still have many questions about what happened that night.The crash happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Police say an officer ran the car’s plates and noticed it was reported stolen. SDPD says the driver ran a red light, refusing to pull over. According to police, the officer lost sight of the car, but the helicopter followed.
