SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report paints a grim picture of the housing supply in San Diego.According to numbers just released by the Southern California Real Estate Research Council, housing permits in San Diego County dropped by 43% through the first six months of 2019, compared to the same period in 2018.So far this year, there have been 2,037 units of housing permitted in San Diego."We are in deep trouble in housing production," says Borre Winckel, the President of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County. "We can't build the housing for the people that need it most."Winckel says decades of increased costs from state and local fees, regulations, labor costs and more have led to this point. He says it's too expensive for developers to build anything that the average San Diegan can afford. He says that's pushing the "workforce" population of teachers, first responders and military out of the market."There will be homelessness, and there will be more workforce displacement to Temecula and points beyond," says Winckel. "That's all because we have screwed up the regulatory environment that exists to build houses for the people that need them."The numbers show a steady decline in housing construction in San Diego.2015: 6,403 permits2016: 6,0362017: 5,2302018: 4,2862019: 2.037 (so far)Winckel says the only solution is to ease regulations and make it easier for companies to build.According to the report, Santa Barbara had a 40% decline, while Los Angeles and San Bernardino had declines in permits around 20%. 1547
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new reality television series focused on the day-to-day operation and conservation efforts of the San Diego Zoo will premiere Aug. 10 on Animal Planet.The cable channel had two crews shoot five days a week for more than four months to capture behind-the-scenes video at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Cameras were allowed into locations rarely seen by the general public, including inside the veterinary hospitals at the two sites."A lot of people don't know all that goes on behind the scenes and this show is basically that opportunity for anybody to peek in and spend time behind the scenes with the keepers," said San Diego Zoo Ambassador Rick Schwartz.There will be ten episodes, each an hour long. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Minnesota man suspected of possessing child pornography may be in San Diego, according to the San Diego Police Department.Jamison Michael Nelson, 40, was the focus of a news release issued Monday to alert the public.San Diego Police did not release details about the charges, but information from DL-online.com indicated a man named Jamison Michael Nelson was charged with six felony counts of possessing pornographic works on a computer.The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received an alert from Google indicating that three images which may have been child pornography had been uploaded to a Gmail account, according to the report.DL-online.com reported that a search of Nelson’s residence turned up a hard drive hidden in a coffee pot.San Diego Police did not indicate why they believe Nelson may be in our area.He is white, six-feet tall, 185 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. 934
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new option for bike lanes along 30th Street in North Park looks like a compromise between cyclists and business owners.The new proposal, called Option A+, would build dedicated, protected bike lanes along a 2.4 mile stretch of 30th Street, stretching from Juniper to Adams Avenue. That's longer than initially planned.In return, business owners will get to keep some of their parking. That stretch has around 550 parking spots. The original plan removed all of them. The new plan leaves 100 in place, mostly in business areas rather than residential areas.RELATED: Hundreds of parking spaces in North Park could be removed for bike lanesThe plan first came up at a December meeting of the City Mobility Board.Even with the compromise, some business owners worry the loss of 450 spots will impact their customers."North Park is a destination city," says Kelsey Padigos, the owner of Subterranean Coffee. "We get customers who walk, who ride their bikes and who drive. But this may hurt her bottom line."We have a location in Hillcrest, and the parking situation there is troubling," she says. "It turns customers away.
