SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police have arrested a 26-year-old in connection with a Logan Heights house fire that killed three of his family members last weekend.Police say Wilber Romero was arrested Friday for homicide and arson in connection with the deaths of his parents 44-year-old Jose Romero and 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero, and his sister 21-year-old Iris Romero in a house fire on Sunday. Romero's mother and sister died at the hospital in the days following the blaze while his father died in the fire. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son remain in the hospital. He has been booked into county jail and is set to arraigned on Oct. 22.On Oct. 13, the fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of Clay Ave. Firefighters had to go inside and pull the victims out.Romero, who identified himself to 10News that morning as the family's oldest son, said he awoke to find his bed on fire and tried to yell for his family to get out of the home."My dogs were jumping on me, trying to wake me up. I woke up. When I woke up, my bed was on fire. I jumped out of bed and started screaming the house is on fire," Romero said after the blaze.One witness told 10News he could see one of the victims reaching through the bars in the windows, unable to escape the fire."The minute I stepped out of my restroom, my house on the inside felt warm, like really warm. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers at UC San Diego Health are now looking for volunteers to participate in a COVID-19 clinical trial, starting locally next week.Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine clinical trials will take place in 36 states across the country.“This is the second vaccine trial for the prevention of COVID-19, and like the first, it is a trial of 30,000 individuals nationally,” said Dr. Susan Little, a professor of Medicine and UCSD and the lead on this trial.Little said UCSD researchers hope to enroll about 1,600 people in eight weeks to participate in the trial.“Eighteen or older, in generally good health, but with underlying conditions that put them at greater risk for COVID-19,” she said. “Or people with increased risk of acquiring COVID-19 because of their professions or where they live.”Little said a bus would act as a mobile vaccine clinic. The bus will stop in parking lots in communities that have been historically underrepresented in medical research or disproportionately affected by COVID-19.“We’re going to focus on communities most impacted, the South Bay, East County, underserved communities and communities that have been hardest hit by COVID-19 those with the highest rate of infection in the community,” she said. “It’s a series of two vaccines, a month apart, people will be prescreened over the phone, and then they’ll be vaccinated on day one and day 29. Then they’ll be followed for two years thereafter.”In Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials, Little said the vaccine proved to be safe.“We know that it’s safe in the sense that it causes local tenderness, some mild fatigue headache. Side effects went away in about one week,” she said. “This will be placebo-controlled, so I won’t know, and the participants won’t know whether they got a vaccine or placebo.”She said for every one person who gets the placebo, two people will get the vaccine.If people develop COVID-19 symptoms during the trial, two other mobile wellness clinics will be available for treatment.“Anybody who develops symptoms that are worrisome to COVID, we will come see them in our wellness vehicles and test them for COVID. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego businessman Doug Manchester has suggestions about how to help the people of the Bahamas recover from Hurricane Dorian. “It's devastation. It's beyond all anything that anybody can imagine. The aerial pictures don't do it justice on how much devastation there really is,” Manchester told 10News Thursday. Manchester loaded his plane with supplies and went to work on the island nation with relief organizers. “When this happened, I wanted to go down there as a private citizen to see all I could do to help,” Manchester said. Rebuilding is going to be a long and expensive process but Manchester believes it will happen. “It's going to cost billions, so every little bit helps,” said Manchester. Manchester, who has a long history in the Bahamas, was nominated to be the ambassador by President Trump. The nomination has been on hold for more than a year. “It's political, but hopefully that will see itself through in the next couple months because I can do a lot more as an ambassador than I can as a private citizen." Manchester hopes San Diegans will be generous in their donations to the Bahamas whether it’s through his charitable foundation or another aid group. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County announced Wednesday if the county continues to hit state triggers with the spread of the coronavirus, museums, zoos and aquariums could be on the long list of closures Monday.The measures apply to any indoor activities.Balboa Park just reopened the Air and Space Museum two weeks ago, after everything closed down in March due to the pandemic."We want to make sure people come back to the park, it is the cultural heart of San Diego," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said this weekend more of our favorite museums are set to open. Friday the Science Center, the Veterans Museum, the Natural History Museum and the International Gift Shop are set to reopen, with three more museums opening Saturday July 4.The possibility those openings could be short-lived is something Comiskey says they're ready for."We're certainly hoping all the people of San Diego County are really able to pull together and make sure the infection rate and the case load and all these lovely metrics, these important metrics can be contained and can be controlled," he said hopefully.Comiskey said if they have to close Monday after putting so many precautions and time in to ensure the park is safe, they will.Looking to the future, he said they're brainstorming how to bring in money to help these cherished icons survive."I think as time goes on we need to look at what fund-raising is possible, I think we need to look with those organizations that rely on revenue through the gate."
