SHANGHAI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai World Expo marked its 100th day Sunday, with the first group of visitors arriving as early as 4 a.m.Some, like Ni Dan from eastern Jiangsu Province, even chose to stay overnight in front of the Expo Park entrance to guarantee obtaining tickets to some of the most popular pavilions.Ni, 20, and two of his classmates were the first visitors entering the Expo Park Sunday.Ni said, "We chose to visit Expo today for three reasons: it's the Expo's 100th day; it's the second anniversary of the Beijing Olympic Games; plus it's the eighth day of the eighth month, which is considered by many an auspicious number."Sitting on the ground or on 10-yuan (about 1.5 U.S. dollars) plastic folding stools newly purchased from vendors, people chatted, played cards or meditated to reserve energy for a very long day of waiting, walking, viewing and waiting again.Nearly 38 million visitors, about 95 percent of whom are Chinese and nearly 80 percent are non-Shanghainese, have come to the Expo Park since its opening on May 1, and an average of about 450,000 visitors came to the Expo Park per day in August, equal to the population of a mid-level Chinese county, according to the Expo bureau. The bureau also said shuttle buses in the Expo park have carried nearly 100 million visitors since the Park's opening, as the buses were out on a run every 14 seconds.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), one of China's "big four" state-owned commercial banks, won the title for the world's largest initial public offering (IPO) after selling another 3.34 billion shares at its IPO price of 2.68 yuan per share. The ABC said in a statement at the Shanghai Stock Exchange Sunday that it raised an additional 8.94 billion yuan (1.31 billion U.S. dollars) after fully exercising the over-allotment option of its Shanghai share offering. The bank has now raised 22.1 billion U.S. dollars. The previous record was set by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which raised a record 21.9 billion U.S. dollars in its IPO in 2006.ABC shares rose 0.37 percent to 2.69 yuan on the Shanghai bourse Friday. The ABC is the last of the "big four" state-owned commercial lenders to go public. The other three banks -- the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of China, are listed on both Shanghai and Hong Kong bourses. The over-allotment, or so-called greenshoe option, allows the sale of additional shares to the public if demand is high.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday denied claims in a U.S. government report, saying it exaggerated China's military strength."We firmly oppose this report," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a press release when asked to comment on the annual report by the U.S. Defense Department. She said the report exaggerated China's military strength, and unfairly blamed China for some problems that exist in the bilateral military relationship."China unswervingly sticks to a path of peaceful development and pursues a national defense policy which is defensive in nature," Jiang said, noting that China is devoted to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large."We urge the U.S side to respect this fact," she said.Jiang also urged the United States to stop issuing such reports on China's military, and work towards improving relations between the two militaries and the two nations, instead of working against China.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Wednesday with Singapore President S.R. Nathan. They praised the development of bilateral ties and pledged to further cooperation."We attach great importance to the relations with Singapore," Hu told Nathan during the meeting at the Great Hall of the People, saying that China-Singapore relations had witnessed remarkable development since the two forged diplomatic ties 20 years ago."We applaud Singapore's adherence to the one-China policy and its support to our national reunification," Hu said.Hu said that China would work with Singapore to enhance political mutual trust and actively carry out the China-Singapore and China-ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) free trade agreements. He also expressed his hope that the two nations would increase bilateral cooperation in the high-tech and human resources sectors to achieve mutually successful results and common development.Nathan said China's economic growth was conducive to Singapore and the region at large. He welcomed more Chinese businesses to invest in his country and conduct mutually beneficial cooperation. The two presidents spoke highly of the development of the Suzhou Industrial Park and the Tianjin Eco-City in China as landmark projects of China-Singapore cooperation.Speaking on behalf of the Singaporean government and people, Nathan extended his sympathy to the Chinese people in the mudslide-hit areas in Zhouqu County in Gansu.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province. Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province. The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province. However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.
