The 2018 Summer Movies in the Park series will kick off next Friday with a viewing of Coco at Waterfront Park. The event series is a great option for a family-friendly night out--- it offers games, giveaways, music and activities before the sun goes down. After sunset, you and your family can settle into your chairs and blankets to watch a movie under the stars.Movies are rated G through PG-13. This year’s Summer Movies in the Park is bigger than ever, with 151 movies showing at dozens of parks across the county. All screenings are free and open to the public.Movies include new hits, like “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Black Panther,” as well as classics like “The Princess Bride” and “Back to the Future.” Be sure to check out the movie calendar for a complete schedule.San Diego County Parks and Recreation and sponsor cities began the series in 2007 as a “take back our parks” initiative. The movie nights were created to give San Diego residents a reason to visit their local parks for free and safe evening events, as well as discouraging inappropriate after-hours park use and loitering. This is the eleventh season of Summer Movies in the Park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Voters across San Diego County could end up with the final say over massive housing developments proposed for the backcountry. That's if voters themselves approve an initiative headed to the March 2020 ballot. The measure, called S.O.S., for Safeguard our San Diego Countryside, would trigger a public countywide vote anytime the County Board of Supervisors moves to increase density in the general plan to make way for more housing. "When you put cities where there are no roads, where there isn't fire service, there aren't schools, the cost of the infrastructure is going to be borne by the general taxpayer," said Mark Jackson, with the Yes on S.O.S. campaign. But a group of developers, economists and union are sounding the alarm about the initiative, which they say would make the region's housing crisis even worse. A county report found that the public vote would add a year of delay to projects and increase the cost by as much as .3 million. Meanwhile, housing prices would rise as supply remains tight. "Many new officers have young families, and those families are hit the hardest by anti-growth and anti-housing measures like S.O.S.," said Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association. Both sides agree San Diego County needs more housing. However, the proponents of the measure note the general plan already calls for 60,000 new homes for all income levels. Those opposed counter that those would largely be expensive, built on multi-acre lots. They add that this initiative could impact development proposals with as little as six housing units. The initiative made its way to the March ballot after the "yes" campaign got 107,000 signatures. That's the same election in which voters will decide the fate of the massive Newland Sierra development in Escondido, a 2,000-home master plan the county approved in 2018. A voter-led initiative achieved enough signatures to send it to the ballot, and overturn that change to the general plan. 2008

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with an invisible injury, and its effects can be debilitating."I was not happy with myself, I was unhealthy, I was seeking all sorts of excitement and danger, I was drinking a whole heck of a lot, very angered, always in pain, migraines, physically and emotionally drained, unhealthy in so many ways," said Jimmy Works, a retired Marine Corps veteran. While his last deployment was in 2010, Works was only diagnosed with TBI this year despite suffering multiple head injuries in combat."It's part of life, it's a new reality," said Works. Works and other TBI survivors are now finding healing through LoveYourBrain Yoga, an evidence-based program now in dozens of states. "What's unique about the LoveYourBrain series is it's specifically for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers," said Nancine Decherd, a facilitator for the program. The program helps participants cope with their injuries and also provides a support base:Adapts specific poses to prevent dizziness and headachesOffers similar movements in a similar sequence to support learning and memoryUses soft lighting and soothing music to make the yoga class environment welcomingIncorporates strategies to focus attention and release negative thoughtsBuilds community through group discussion with empowering TBI-related themesKat Blue is another San Diego participant. “This is a someplace to go, and people are here who understand me or at least are empathetic about what I'm dealing with," said Blue.LoveYourBrain Yoga was created following the positive results of a pilot study conducted by Dartmouth College. And a recently published study in Disability and Rehabilitation showed LoveYourBrain Yoga generated many powerful physical, emotional, cognitive, and social benefits. The six-week program is free to TBI survivors and their caregivers. Learn more about upcoming sessions in San Diego. 1950
