SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Uber driver helped a Lyft driver after a crash on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley Monday.The Uber driver told 10News he was exiting eastbound I-8 at Mission Gorge Rd. at 1:45 a.m. when he saw an SUV on its side, blocking the road.The man turned on his hazard lights and used his Uber car to block the road while he ran to help, he said.The Lyft driver was trapped and screaming for help, according to the man.The Uber driver said he kicked the windshield until he formed a hole the Lyft driver could climb through.Paramedics took the Lyft driver to the hospital with cuts and bruises.CHP officers are investigating the cause of the crash.The Lyft driver was not arrested but told the CHP his 'mind wasn't working', according to Officer Jim Bettencourt. 806

At just 16-years-old, many teens today couldn't think of doing so.Alexa Mendes said she knew she had to cut the cord after recognizing that she was addicted to the likes, shares, and interactions online."It is difficult enough to try and manage our overwhelming lives already filled with extracurriculars, sports teams, clubs, honors societies, difficult classes, insane amounts of homework, the pressures of applying to prestigious universities, and an abundance of other expectations," Mendes writes. "On top of that, we are always thinking about our online profiles."So she curbed her online presence back. In doing so, she learned a lot and turned those lessons into a book: #Unsubscribed: How I am thriving in high school without social media (and you can, too)."It wasn't that difficult. It's something I'm passionate about since it's part of my life and my experience and story to tell," Mendes said.Now, Mendes' message isn't that teens should drop social media entirely. Instead, she hopes her story can help others strike a healthy balance."Over time, I realized that the key wasn’t to abolish my usage completely--it was all about becoming balanced and finding a way to use social media in moderation," she writes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After a nationwide vote, San Diego Zoo's newest river hippo calf has been named.The zoo's 20-day-old hippo will be named Amahle, meaning "beautiful one" in Zulu. The name was revealed Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America." “The fact that so many people were part of this process has been amazing. Amahle was a name suggested multiple times and it couldn’t be a better fit. The father, Otis, has been kept separate from the two since Funani is very protective of the calf.“My hope is that those who participated in this naming event will feel a connection with Amahle and are inspired to learn more about river hippos and ways they can help hippos in their native range in Africa," Chapman said.The hippopotamus is currently listed as "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An executive order signed by President Trump Wednesday may help San Diego's military spouses find work. The executive order is aimed at increasing opportunities for military spouses to obtain federal jobs.The order encourages agencies to increase use of the noncompetitive hiring authority for military spouses.For military spouses, the unemployment rate is 16 percent which is four times higher than the national average for female adults. Among military spouses who do have jobs, 14 percent have part-time jobs and half of those spouses want full-time work.Many spouses of military members choose careers like teaching, nursing or law, but such jobs often have state-specific licenses that make it difficult to move from state to state.“Right now I’m looking at leaving my career because the exams and licensing costs are phenomenal never mind how poorly the education system is run; right from resources to teacher pay,” Sheryl Ogle said in a Facebook comment.According to an impact study conducted by the San Diego Military Advisory Council, there are more than 100,000 active-duty military members in San Diego. The service members are split fairly evenly between the Navy and Marines.In a phone call Wednesday morning, a White House official says the new order directs agencies to make an existing non-competitive hiring authority provision for military spouses available in their job announcements, according to Military.com. The hiring authority allows military spouses to be appointed to certain jobs without having to go through the usual hiring process.According to dosomething.org, military spouses tend to be under 35 and are mostly women with only five percent of military spouses being men.Data also shows that military families relocate 10 times more often than civilian families, moving an average of every two to three years. 1886
