SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Officials from Mexico and the United States held a joint meeting Friday to discuss binational relations, legislation, and urban mobility strategies. At the discussion, officials from both sides of the border discussed solutions to the Tijuana River contamination issue and the concept of a new port of entry. Board member Mario Lopez was joining the group from Tecate and he was very supportive of the new port of entry. He supports the initial plans to have an additional border crossing at Jacumba and Tecate. Lopez says that the wait time at San Ysidro is hurting the economic growth, “10 billion dollars lost because of border wait time” he tells 10News. About 20 years ago, SANDAG did a study and it showed the necessity of another port of entry. The Mayor of Imperial Beach, Serge Dedina tells 10News, “on of our biggest source of air pollution comes from the trucks and cars waiting to cross the border”. Right now, the Jacumba Port of Entry is a concept, “these projects take many years” Lopez tells 10News it will take another 10 years but in the meantime they’re hoping to get the funding to purchase the land within the next five years. Aside from economic and environmental impacts, supporters of the port of entry say it’ll also be beneficial for trade relations between California and Mexico. Another topic discussed at the binational meeting was the Tijuana River contamination issue. Mayor Dedina tells 10News the new president in Mexico is “looking at more public-private partnerships for public water reuse”. In fact, last year they passed a partnership with an Israeli company, Odis. It’s a filtration plant that will help lead a water reuse project south of the border. Dedina says, “the project could clean up 30 million gallons of sewage a day”. Compared to previous years, Dedina is more optimistic seeing steps being made to solve a major problem that continues to threaten our southern beaches. The four-night convention begins with a roll call on Monday evening from delegates who take turns stating their pick for the nominee. California Republican National Committeewoman and Delegate to Republican National Convention Harmeet Dhillon said they are expecting a unanimous vote for President Trump and VP Mike Pence.Then, top republicans and citizens will speak through the next few nights. President Trump is expected to speak Thursday evening, but the schedule also shows he will be in the program to some capacity every evening.This would typically be a time when hundreds from California attend, but with coronavirus restrictions, that’s not possible this year. Dhillon said California would typically have 170 delegates, an equal number of alternates and guests, but that number has dwindled to just 6 for 2020. She said everyone in Charlotte has taken multiple coronavirus tests and said she feels safe with the health guidelines being practiced.Dhillon also said that she encouraged people who would not be flying to the RNC to donate the money saved from staying home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - NASA's Mars-bound rocket launch from Southern California could leave San Diego gazers disappointed.Saturday's launch window could be blanketed behind a thick layer of morning fog, according to meteorologists. Vandenberg Air Force Base is forecasted to see partly cloudy skies through the morning hours.The fog, however, may not be enough to scrap the launch. InSight's launch director Tim Dunn said during a briefing Thursday that, "We got 'go's' from all aspects, all organizations that have a vested interest in launching InSight," Space.com reported. RELATED: Mars-bound NASA launch will be seen from San DiegoThe launch is currently scheduled for Vandenberg between 4:05 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. NASA has given a six-month time window to set InSight for Mars.Regardless of fog, officials have given the all-clear for NASA's first interplanetary launch on the west coast.But that shouldn't deter San Diegans from trying to catch a glimpse — even if just a blurry bright light in the distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than 20 people were arrested in San Diego as part of a statewide sanctuary enforcement operation carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.ICE officials said the arrests were made between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2, with the focus on “criminal aliens and individuals who have violated U.S. immigration laws.”According to officials, arrests were made in San Diego, Encinitas, Vista, Lakeside, National City, Poway, Fallbrook, Spring Valley, Escondido, Oceanside, and San Marcos.In a news release, ICE officials said:“Of those arrested, 10 were the direct result of sanctuary state laws that force local law enforcement not to honored a lawfully issued immigration detainer. Two arrests were the direct result of the law enforcement agency releasing the individuals prior to ICE being able to place an immigration detainer on their case.Of those arrested, over 80 percent had prior criminal convictions and/or pending criminal charges. Of those, the criminal offenses included Lewd and Lascivious Acts with a minor under 14 with Force, Domestic Violence, Assault, Possession of Control Substance for Sale, Possession of Control Substance, Vehicle Theft, Burglary, and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.One individual who was arrested during the operation will face federal criminal prosecution for having illegally re-entered the U.S. after their removal. Those who were primary targets of this operation have final orders of removal issued by a federal immigration judge. Their due process was completed, and they will be removed from the United States. The individuals who were arrested and require adjudication from an immigration judge will be placed in detention pending the outcome of their removal proceedings.”Gregory Archambeault, Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in San Diego, said, “The State of California has chosen to prohibit local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with ICE to protect public safety. These local agencies are forced to release criminal aliens to the street, abandoning the victims of crimes and the innocent members of their communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One San Diego restaurant has been awarded one of the most prestigious accolades given to eateries.Chef William Bradley's restaurant Addison at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar was given one Michelin star in the guide's first California edition. The guide awards between one and three stars to restaurants, meaning either "a very good restaurant in its category" (one star), "excellent cooking, worth a detour" (two stars), or "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey" (three stars).Addison, a contemporary French restaurant, was San Diego's only restaurant to receive a star and one of 90 to receive at least one star in the California guide.RELATED: Michelin names several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'In a statement to 10News, Bradley said the award is "humbling."
