The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center have seen a spike in alcohol poisonings and hospitalizations across much of Arizona.The center services all counties except Maricopa, stating it has never seen so many in one month.“We see dozens of these per year, but never 22 in a month with hand sanitizers being the source of these hospitalizations," said Dr. Steve Dudley, director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center.Since June 1, it has received 22 cases related to people drinking hand sanitizer. The center said many don't know the poisonous chemical methanol is inside.Dudley explained if hand sanitizer isn't mixed just right, it can create the toxic compound.“With COVID-19 and everyone is rushing to be prepared and stay stocked on hand sanitizer that's a left shortage. So, that's opened the door for either whole making of hand sanitizer or other companies or manufacturers being able to step in and fill that need,” explained Dr. Dudley.Dudley explained the effects of methanol might not be apparent right away, but could be deadly over time.“Methanol itself is not very toxic, it's what the body breaks methanol down into that causes all the toxicity,” he said.Signs and symptoms of methanol poisoning include:NauseaVomitingBlurry or hazy vision that could lead to permanent blindnessSeizuresDudley explained the reason some drink hand sanitizer.“Unfortunately, you know, it's an alcohol substitute, just like we see people who drink rubbing alcohol and attempts to get drunk. TAMPA, Fla. — Within one month, someone splashed four cars with an acid-like liquid in busy Tampa parking lots.Deputies are not sure if the incidents are related. The most recent happened in a shared parking lot near the AMC Veterans movie theater and Starbucks off Anderson Road.The scenario is the same in all of these situations. Some sort of corrosive liquid is poured onto the doors of the cars which damages paint, metal and plastic on the car.Two panels on Gary Schaff’s 2015 white Mercedes had to be repainted. He was parked in the lot off Anderson Road two nights in a row as he and his family caught up on the latest Marvel movies at AMC."When we came out to the car which was a little bit of a walk away from the theater, it looked as if there was almost shaving cream or foam on the side of the car,” Schaff said. "We're like, what is that?”As his family got closer, they realized the white paint had bubbled up. By the time they got home a lot of it had flaked off and exposed the metal underneath. "I don't even know what I would say to someone who thinks it’s a good idea to do something like that,” Schaff said. "What does it accomplish exactly?"Hillsborough County deputies say a 2007 BMW was vandalized the same way in a Publix parking lot off N. Dale Mabry on April 11 and a 2017 Porsche SUV was damaged by a corrosive liquid in the Heath Integrated parking lot on April 23. All three attacked occurred within a few miles of each other. The Tampa Police Department responded to a 2011 Audi with similar damage at International Mall on April 15."It's just to me a completely random thing, and it's really hard to prevent,” Schaff said. Christopher Vialva, 40, was pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m. EDT Thursday. He was convicted and sentenced to death in the slaying of a religious couple visiting Texas from Iowa when Vialva was 19. Vialva was the seventh federal execution since July and the second this week. Five of the first six were white, a move critics argue was a political calculation to avoid uproar. The sixth was Navajo. STUART, Florida — A 29-year-old teacher at Stuart Middle School was arrested Thursday night and charged with sexual battery after incidents with a 13-year-old girl at the school.According to a Martin County Sheriff's Office report, the investigation began when a school resource was alerted on March 27 regarding suspicious behavior involving a seventh-grade math teacher.The teacher, later identified as Jeffrey Tomasulo, was accused of tickling several female students, causing them to feel uncomfortable.Detectives interviewed the girls, who said they were tickled on their stomachs, thighs and armpits. Surveillance video taken outside of Tomasulo's classroom during first period on March 20 showed a 13-year-old seventh-grade girl knocking on his door. At that time, Tomasulo has a planning period and not teaching a class.Video showed the girl entering his classroom 9:15 a.m. At 9:17 a.m., video shows Tomasulo opening the door and checking the outside handle of the door. The girl then leaves the room with Tomasulo at 9:27 a.m. On March 28, the girl's mother was interviewed by a detective. The woman said that her daughter admitted to performing oral sex on Tomasulo in his classroom.The girl told the detective and a state attorney victim advocate that the teacher asked her "creepy" questions about her virginity.She said Tomasulo asked her to stay longer after class and occasionally come to his classroom either during first or last period. The teen said she felt pressured by him and that's why she performed oral sex on him approximately five times from January 4 to March 20.At first, Tomasulo denied any sexual involvement with the girl but did say he was alone with her on several occasions to tutor her.He admitted to watching pornography in his classroom but said he was alone. Eventually, Tomasulo told detectives that the girl performed oral sex on him while alone his classroom.    Tomasulo was charged with sexual battery/custodial authority. He made his first appearance in court Friday morning where his bond was set at 0,000. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning the public about fake social media giveaways, where scammers use a technique called “like-farming.”The scam involves posts on Facebook, Instagram or other platforms that ask you to like or comment to enter for the chance to win something, like 0 in groceries for example.The catch is that many of these giveaways don’t actually exist. They’re created by scammers as a way of accumulating as many social media interactions as possible, according to the BBB.Once the scammers have garnered enough likes or comments, the BBB says they’ll edit the post and add something malicious, such as a link to malware.Other times, the BBB says the scammers will strip the original content off the page that has garnered likes and use it to promote “spammy” products or sell it on the black market.While these phony giveaways exist online, so do legitimate ones. The BBB has offered these tips to decipher which are real and which are fake:Look for the blue checkmark. Many social media platforms verify pages from brands and celebrities so that users can tell real pages from copycats. Make sure you look for that trust mark before liking and sharing content.Watch out for new accounts: If you think a giveaway is real, click on the business or celebrity’s profile. If it’s a new account with very little other content, that’s a big red flag.Look out for spelling errors and typos: Real brands use giveaways to promote their company. Spelling errors and typos will make them look bad! They are a big warning signs of a scam.The giveaway asks you to complete too many tasks: If a giveaway asks you to comment on multiple posts, follow several accounts, and tag a couple of brands, it becomes almost impossible to keep track of everyone participating and pick a winner at random (as required by law).There are no terms and conditions. Online giveaways should include contact details of the organizer, how to take part, how the winner will be selected, and eligibility requirements. If you don’t see information, that’s an instant red flag.Don’t click “like” on every post in your feed.
