SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego’s Skyride reopened Wednesday after a ‘”gust of significant wind” caused the ride to close in mid-February. According to SeaWorld, the park, along with the ride’s manufacturer and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health inspected various parts of the ride over the last several months, including the towers, gondolas, ride cables and various other equipment. SeaWorld says the ride’s communication cable was also replaced. RELATED: 'Gust of significant wind' causes SeaWorld ride to stop, leaves 16 strandedOn February 18, high winds caused the ride to shut down, trapping 16 people high above Mission Bay.Rescue efforts lasted roughly from 7:30 p.m. until midnight. “We’re very excited to reopen the Skyride, but before doing so, we were going to ensure it was back to working perfectly,” said Marilyn Hannes, SeaWorld San Diego park president. “Skyride has been a guest favorite for more than 50 years, and I’m thrilled that we can once again open this ride, which for many visitors is a very nostalgic experience. I was just a kid when I first rode Skyride, and I’m happy that I can ride it now with my grandchildren.”The ride first opened in San Diego in 1967. 1229

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State Students created public service announcements, as part of a competition, to encourage their peers to take precautions and stop the spread of the coronavirus. Thursday the university announced two more students tested positive for the virus, making the total four since move in.The County of San Diego and SDSU will use the PSAs online as part of a new ad campaign, according to the county. The university came to the county amid a spike in cases among young people age 20-29. San Diego County reported 25% of positive cases belong to that age group."We're asking people of your generation of your age group to do the right thing," Dr. Hala Madanat, Director of the School of Public Health at SDSU, said. She led the charge to create the competition."I really was hoping that we would hear from the age group where we were struggling to get adherence to the guidelines and be the ones to encourage their peers," to follow the guidelines she said. One of the three winners, Senior JakeBryan Bonifacio, said he felt an obligation to use his skills to help. "It [the pandemic] is very concerning so that’s why I felt compelled to share this opportunity, share my video."Bonifacio is a Marketing major and already had the tools to create a video. He said he used his own camera and editing software. He said it was most important to create an impact using levity and positivity. He used his pup to demonstrate social distancing, "He’s the star of the show... animals bring that lovability."While he is optimistic, he hopes to be a leader for change, to protect his peers and those more vulnerable, like his grandmothers. The winners were announced August 10th and received Apple AirPods, according to Bonifacio.SDSU has 29 confirmed coronavirus cases since March, encompassing students, staff and visitors. 1840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some local colleges are shifting toward a new policy of getting rid of standardized test scores as an admissions requirement. The University of San Diego is one of 60 other colleges, including local Cal State and University of California campuses, now using the "test blind" policy amid a pandemic-altered high school experience and education. The SAT has been something on Laila Ellyse's mind for some time now. She says part of her concern recently has been COVID-19-related restrictions on testing group sizes."You've been hearing about it for such a long time you have to take the SAT, it's like this big bad test," Ellyse said. "The number of seats available at any given test site is now reduced because of social distancing and all of those kinds of things." Ellyse says she had to go all the way to Utah to take the test because there were no testing site options in California. Standardized testing has also become increasingly debate following the nationwide college admissions scandal, in which several parents were charged with paying to get their kids admitted to top tier colleges. That's part of the reason USD is now a test blind campus. While SAT or ACT scores can be admitted, they'll be ignored for admission. Instead, college officials will consider other factors including high school academic record and GPA, letters of recommendation, admission essays, extra-curricular involvement, work experiences, and family responsibilities.USD says it hopes the new policy will make the admissions process fair and equitable for all students and allow lower-income students who may face barriers to accessing testing an even playing field. The test blind policy may not be permanent though. UCSD is test-optional until 2022 and test blind until 2024. San Diego State and local CSU campuses are test blind for 2021 only at the moment. 1868
